I take it that the vast majority of people on this site ride bikes, so how many of you communte to work, college, the police station on your bike? If you don't, why?

No, don't have much choice being a chippy (very hard to carry a sh#t load of tools on the bike).
Ride for fun only

Yes and no - If I have to start before 8 oclock and its cold I'll take my bike otherwises I'll take my bike (push bike). Have only taken my m/c once in the last couple months - saves my petrol money for fun riding rather than commuting which I don't particullary enjoy - too many nutters in cages.

yep I :ride: to, its takes much longer. :first:
Pukekohe to Mangere with car on southern motorway 25-30 mins :disapint:
Pukekohe to Mangere with bike via Miranda-or Kawakawa bay atleast and hour
longer sometimes, if Iam with other kbers, sometimes I never even make it to work. :yeah: depends on how much sick leave I have.

Sometimes I detour on the way home and hit the backroads thats good for the Soul.

Not on a motorbike. I go everywhere within 15km radius from my house on my push bike, that includes work, 2nd work, swimming pool/gym, a few mate's places, eatery, shops etc. etc.
My bikes are 1 dead FXR150, 1 dead TZR250 and 1 live and kicking but race GSXR600. So as you can see, I can't get very far on my motorbikes.

Umm..., no, I usually don't communte, although once I did. Once I munted my bike when I lowsided on the way to work, once I hit a car on the way to work, and once I busted a mirror off when filtering on the way home.
On the other hand, I commute quite frequently, and quite frequently commute, but not if my wife wants a lift, or it's shitty shitty weather. Or the bike's been munted by communtering.
I used to commute all the time, in all weathers (including snow, but that was in Chch), but decided "Why the hell should I?!?" when I realised (a) I got no brownie points for being staunch, (2) I didn't enjoy it as much when the weather was sucky, (d) it increased the DangerFactor substantially, and (iii) I didn't have to, so Why Should I?

I commute. All of 10 minutes! But that's because if I didn't have the bike to look forward to, I'd kill myself before 9am.
I use the bike as a nice "I'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at workI'm not at work" machine.

I did because I was sick of the Auckland traffic. Survived trucks and cars who were out to get me. That didn't phase me. But I stopped when I realised I was wearing out the centre of my back tyre and when I got on the open roads, it made cornering a little more unpredictable. So that was the end of motorbike commuting on a regular basis. Still do occassionally, especially if I want to make my work mates envious.

Assuming you work a five day week, every 60 weeks you'll have a bin, that's just under one bin per annum.

Always commute on the bike. Occasionally I take the cage when I am required to give family/friends a lift to the airport or need to take things to work that don't fit on the bike. Don't really care about the weather, just ride to the conditions. Usually when it is wet and shitty the roads are more congested, so the payoff for riding is greater than on fine days when the traffic is lighter. I always look forward to the trip to and from work, it's just the 9 hours in between that bite.

I need a cage for work, and the company supply it, so it goes to work most days. On a few days a month though I take the bike if i know I won't need to go out of the office to visit someone. Especially on really sunny days! Basically, I take the bike whenever I can, but it's not often enough for my liking.

Been commuting the last 10 years now. Wouldn't have it any other way (though if the weather is truly, utterly diabolical, I will occasionally use public transport).
25kms there, 25kms back roughly - which is why it was all the funnier when my insurance company cocked up a quote, doing it on the basis that I rode 3,000 miles (roughly 4,800 kms?) a year! If I renewed on 1st Jan, I'd use up my allowance by about the end of March!

I used to commute on my FZR. 20k's each way. Thats just under 10,000k per year. I had to stop because it was insanely expensive. A set of tyres costs me about $540. When I got the bike it had brand new rubber (had to scrub it in). The front lasted 4,500k and it was well stuffed, the back was a bit over 5,000k and it was worse. So that's basically $1,100 + per year just in tyres just to get to work and back. The minister of finance started complaining, so I bought an 84 Mazda 323 as a work bomb- cost me $535. Sure the car rego and insurance bumped it up a bit, but it was way cheaper than using the bike. Plus I get to choose the bikes rubber based on stickiness, not how long it will last!

56 km a day thru Southern Motorway traffic and over the bridge. Apart from the tricky cross winds on the bridge its a relatively easy ride. Just have to watch out for the :Police: when filtering thru traffic !

Depends what time you leave, and which way you go. But because you're allowed to use the transit lane down Onewa Road (if you're on your bike), that bit at least is pretty good. Takes me 20 minutes from home to Ponsonby (K Road end), with the Onewa Road bit being about 5 of that (compared with my record of 90 minutes in the car, 60 of which was Onewa Road :buggerd: )

I commute too. Every day. From Te Atatu to Northcote, 25km each way. Guaranteed sub-30 minutes if I filter, which I do. My record for longest time doing same trip in cage, in traffic, is 3 hours. I've crashed four times while commuting, two of them in heavy traffic on the motorway. It hurts and I would like not to do it very much more because after the last one I still can't kneel on my left knee, and as I believe I've pointed out previously, that has a very restrictive effect on my sexual athleticism.

Are these crashes the result of filtering or just silly cage drivers who don't see you ?
For the 2 months I was commuting I was lucky to not have any close calls but am very careful when I filter. Once I have another ride I start commuting to work again.
jrandom
17th January 2005, 15:54
Are these crashes the result of filtering or just silly cage drivers who don't see you ?
They're the result of filtering in a way that put me at risk. Both times the road was wet and greasy, both times it was just after I came around a bend in the motorway and had therefore been invisible in wing mirrors, both times someone pulled across lanes without indicating properly. Neither of them saw me, and I don't really terribly blame them for that.
Because I was filtering like a git. As it happened, in neither instance was there any swerving space, and I was going too fast. The first time I was on really terrible tyres and hit the rear brake too hard, back of the bike fishtailed out from under me. The second time I was on reasonably good tyres, used the front more, hurrah, did a death stoppie, went right over the bars, bounced off the back of the car, bike did a forward 180 and ended up on its side pointing backwards.
If I'd been taking it easy and filtering sensibly with healthy paranoia, neither crash would have happened.
I have done over 100 through stopped traffic when someone pulled across in front of me. It was a warm dry day and there was swerving space that time. I used up one of my cat-lives.

I'll get my jollies on the open road, now, preferably behind someone else who can run over any cowpats around blind corners for me.
And I'll still manage 30 minutes each way on my commute with sensible filtering, which is a huge saving. Going nuts never took more than 7 or 8 minutes off that time. What's the point?

Commute ? Isnt that something people on four wheels do. I can see their faces in my rear view mirrors as I move up to the front of the line at the lights ....h commutting is obviously a really bad experience! .... now lok at the faces of the motorcyclists as they shoot down the left hand lane, move into the lane to go up to Cook Street .. cant possibly be commutting. They are too damn happy! 6km, ten minutes, the four sets of lights between the Norh Shore and the central city. There is no traffic, so there cant possibly be any commuting ... except of course for the Harleys cause they are too wide to get through the traffic ... oops I forgot .. Well, hey, you do that and he doesn't have to pay for the gas, right?
Won't work if you have to do the sales-rep-drivey-around-thang during the day, of course.

Used to before I blew up the engine on the LS and then completely failed to get the GSX running for more than 2 minutes at a time. That was when I was living out near Tauwhare, 20mins ride in to central Hamilton. Now live in town and walk 40mins each way. Live closer, take longer to get there.
Would still commute by motorbike if I had one.
Used to have co-workers saying "isn't it too wet to be riding a motorbike?" when I'd roll in during the winter. Funny thing was: I'd be nice and dry after removing all my waterproofing while they were still wet after running from the car to the building in the pouring rain. Can't figure cager "logic" some days. It wasn't me that was standing by the heater, steaming slightly.
Love commuting by bike - even in the wet.

New experience for me, riding in snow. This week winter finally arrived. First day of snow I took the car but spent an hour + queueing despite leaving at 6am. Since then I've taken the bike and changed my route to keep to the gritted roads. Apart from getting covered in salt and snow sticking to the visor the riding is fine.

I commute for the following reasons:
It's quick
It's cheaper to park
It wakes me up in the morning
Fuel bills are cheaper
I can occasionally take off at lunch for a ride
Means I don't have to car pool with anyone else
I dont commute for the following reasons:
1. It's quick - who cares - put on the aircon and a CD,crank up the volume, bimble along in the queue
2. It's cheaper to park - Free parking at the office - otherwise its drive all day.
3. It wakes me up in the morning - who wants to be woken up so early.
4. Fuel bills are cheaper - dont pay for gas anyway.
5. I can occasionally take off at lunch for a ride - LUNCH! - you have time for lunch!
6. Means I don't have to car pool with anyone else - whats a car pool?

Try Lake Rd, Sylvan Ave, onto Onewa

Commuted for over 10 years on a bike, last 9 accident free. travel over 500km's a week at the mo'. wet , dark, i always love it.
Don't know why but over the years as soon as i have spent 15 minutes behind the wheel of a cage i have an unshakable urge to fall asleep, another good reason to ride a bike!

30ks in 30 ks out, some times 50ks out, one day I left early, about 500ks out.
I hate the way my tyre gos flat in the center but 20-30 mins on the bike vs 1-2 hours in a cage trying to stay awake? Tyres arnt THAT expensive on 250s anyway...
Well its still cheap on gas!

I take it that the vast majority of people on this site ride bikes, so how many of you communte to work, college, the police station on your bike? If you don't, why?
I do service calls to hospitals on the bandit when logistics allow(especially Whangarei, then home via waipu, mangawai)

Sad confession: two days in a row that I've taken the cage to work instead of the bike...
I think I'm developing an allergy to rain.

So do I & as long as you have the right gear, why would you use a cage? :weird:

I agree. Sooner or later you have to get out of a cage and you may not have the luxury of being able to park under cover. I've sedately wandered from where I've parked the bike - rain cascading down over my helmet and wet weather gear - whilst workmates have sprinted past me splashing through the puddles, getting soaked by the rain. I strip off my gear once indoors and my clothes are nice and dry while all those who brought their cars are saturated - and they ask me if it isn't too wet to be riding a motorbike... :weird: I'm not the one huddled by the heater, steaming.
A 'bike and decent wet weather gear beats a car any day.

Heh heh... sounds exactly like my workplace.
"Bit wet out there, innit?"
- "Nah, I've got good gear, I'm drier than you!"
"Bit cold for on a bike..."
- "Nah, I've got good gear, I'm as warm as toast!"
"You're keen, riding on a day like this!"
- "Why?"

Yeah, it's funny, days when I bring the Whale to work, I usually arrive quite hot and sweating It's a hot bike, and there's bit of slow stuff at the end of the commute. So, with my think jacket I'm at least toasty warm by the time I get to work.
But so many people (themselves shivering !) say "Oh aren't you cold ?" "No too damn hot actually" "puzzled look - yeah anyway "
Since originaly posting this I must admit to having turned to the dark side. I no longer communte to work by bike as I have to drop the Bifflings off at school on route. However they're on holidays for two weeks from Monday, so the Biffbird will be allowed out again on school days again. :ride:

It's watching them sprint through the puddles and the water's splashing up inside their trouser legs - I actually cringe in sympathy. Meanwhile I'm lumbering along like the Michelin Man.
What to do, eh? Try to sprint and splash water up your legs (and fail to dodge the rain anyway) or walk sedately and get even more drenched with rain?
Or get with the programme and buy a motorbike and some decent wet weather gear...

Yep.. Ride to work every day, I only have a learners cage license so its pretty much my only choice.
I actually got into riding because I wanted to commute on a bike. Started commuting on a Street Magic on my learners cage license, figured out I <3'd riding and wanted something bigger and faster.. Got my leaners bike and a GN250, havnt looked back since. Got my restricted now and in a few more months my full.
Then I have to talk the bank mangler into letting me have 40k for a new Guzzi California EV :-P

My bike is my primary means of transport.
That said If I have an appointment that really needs a skirt or a hair style of some grandeur I will think about the car. Most times now I think sod it, pants and a rugged hairdo are fine!
