The ZXR is nearly ready to hit the shop for its pre-VIN service and tuning. Im not too fussed on price but would like to know where you others think i should be heading?
Its been sitting for over a year but has been started and run every month or so, heres what im thinking:
1.) carbs set and balanced and possibly totally cleaned (doesnt run to smooth)
2.) front brake light switch replaced (could do this myself)
3.) right indicators sorted (not working some reason)
4.) cam chain adjusted or possibly replaced (it sounds pretty loose)
5.) general WOF check so i know its up to scratch for VIN-ing
so where should i take it? Probably be going in on a trailer as its not registered or anything...
cheers

I wouldn't be two concerned about the cam chain. I haven't yet heard a ZXR 250 that doesn't have a rattly cam chain! A good mechanic who has dealt with ZXR's before will be able to tell from listening to it at cold idle.

Good spanner monkey outfits in Auckland that I've used (they're not the only ones, but they're the ones that have impressed me):
- Mt Eden M/C
- Colemans
- Spectrum
Be worth while having a wee chat when you book it in, tell them what you've been doing with it, tell them what you're after. They'll take good care of a bike that's had love like that put into it if they know you'll be paying attention.
(Not to say there's anything unprofessional about the shops, but they do have a high throughput, and it never hurts to be the guy with the bike that deserves some TLC...)
Only problem I've found with discussing in detail the work they'll do is that they will then not go and do anything else, because they know you're expecting precise things on the bill, so they won't be looking for stuff that you might have missed. Given the circumstances, it might not hurt to tell them that you'd like them to burn an extra billable hour just going over it and seeing if they can find anything that needs attention.

I've said it a million bazillion times... and i'll say it again .. Mt Eden is the place to go.
(havn't had bike serviced but the guys at spectrum seem like good blokes too)

I've seen pic of the damage done by a slack cam chain in a zxr250. It had almost worn right through the head cover. Def get it checked imho.

Yeah i second that one, not nice when the chain punches a hole through the cam cover, spitting oil everywhere, i was just lucky to get a 2nd hand cam cover for $20 (score) off a guy i randomly meet at go karting.
