Took the Aprilia up to Hanmer yesterday and had a gentle ride over Jacks to check out the snow situation. Quite a bit there but not quite as much as last years ride but i'm sure more will come. So wadda you guys recon to another ride up there around the back end of July.

This weekend is out for me and the next is looked dodgy as my son is moving house then and i'm sure i'll get a call up. 19th or 26th weekends are all good. I am going to take the WR on the trailer so i could get one more bike on, share fuel costs and take some extra gear type of thing.

Brave man!! 1200GS, ice, snow!! Hopefully there will be enough people to push. Just thinking back to last year.

I'll either take the CRF or KLX.
Will wait and see who else does what before deciding on vanning up or taking up a spot on your trailer.

used to take the xj900 in the snowy roads of the lewis pass.....Yes, have had most my bikes (CBR1000 included) through various sealed road passes in snowy conditions, Lewis, Arthurs, roads to the Brass monkey all included but trust me that's a bit different to what we have in mind. Last time the Hanmer run was more compacted ice than snow over a rather rutted up Jollies Pass to start with.
If in doubt you can find a couple of our older snow adventures on my youtube channel.

There is some snow in the Adventure turned trail video as well but it wasn't all about snow on that one.

Would a motard be able to hack it? With enduro tyres?
Have been considering the viability of a motard, hence the question.

Remember fullers - the ultimate point of this ride is to try and get to the top of island saddle. Probably not possibly unless you all have TF125's :D
Good luck I wont be joining you this year.

What about a Honda MT5? Looks like the smaller bike is the way to go, lol...
Yip, don't think a motard will do too well...

LOL - possibly? The TF125 worked cause it has really really short first gear, a low seat height are really mallow power.
No a motard would probably not be that good. Height seat height and long first gear make for lots of hard work.

Thanks Cooneyr.
I think I'll find some snow and have a go. Shouldn't be too difficult considering the amount we've had all around the country...

You just reminded me of a point I meant to raise. You fullers might like to try high tyre pressures when riding in the snow. When we were down south at Queens Birthday weekend I was running 30 psi with well worn D606 tyres and I recon I had better traction than the others I was with when they were running 20psi with much better condition tyres with similar tread patterns.
Point of the higher pressure is that the tyre digs through the snow and grips on the ground underneath rather than sitting on top and spinning.
If any of you can be bothered to try this out I'm keen to get some feedback.

Work required my presence in Auckland last Wednesday. Flying over North Canterbury there was abit of snow on the tops but behind Hanmer from Jacks Pass north it was solid snow on the ground. Probably a lot thicker today.

Should not be too bad on the big xt as i would think we will more than likely go over jacks pass to save time as we didn't get very far last time due to lots of pushing over jollies. Once over the pass it was fairly easy going.

well I tried it today on the way to work & home
I had ice this morning & found if i stayed at or under 40Ks the bike broke through & griped above 40 it was had work staying up right & to night I had both snow & ice when the snow was 2inch or more the psi needs to be less but because of the ice I left it at 30psi
in short it was a very interesting ride home to night but olot of fun

Hmm, I'd have though the high pressures would work best with softer snow or thin ice that can be broken up/squished out of the way. When it is really thick/can't be punched through then I'm not sure what pressures work better.
To put it in context we were riding in about 2-3 inches of snow that was firm but my tires with 30 psi would cut through it where as the other two would float on top and spin. For the snow ride last year I think 30 psi would not have worked cause the snow was compacted (vehicles) and almost as hard as ice.

Weather is supposed to be better in Hanmer on Saturday (tomorrow), cold, cloudy, but no rain for the most part.
I can do this ride (although the van has sprung a leak but I think it'll make it there and back ok with bottled water in the back just incase) or I can do the Sunday Coleridge ride (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=78359), but I cant afford time or cash to do both and I haven't done any video work etc for 4 or 5 weeks so should stay home do some of that anyway.

Been feeling a bit similar to the weather this week which is why i didn't post for this weekend. Weather is supposed to turn shitty for the Coleridge ride on sunday. I'm ok for the next few weekends for a Hanmer and what say a lap of Lees valley a couple a weeks after that.
