Does anyone have any advice on a bike for my partner?

She is somewhat vertically challenged, bless her heart, and we're looking for a bike for her to ride on our weekend rides.

I was thinking of a Yamaha Virago or similar but if any one with personal experience in finding a bike suitable for our shorter halfs has some advice it will be appreciated :)

Thanks!

P.S My missus has just seen this post and told me I had to say she is 5' 2 and 2/5". Just to clarify she is not a total dwarf. :)

How vertically challenged is she? It's really the inside leg measurement plus confidence level that decides the bike.. I only have 30" inside leg (according to my jeans) but don't have a problem riding most things.
If she's also short on experience then the Virago or similar is probably a good call

Once the new laws come into effect in regard to learner licenses you will have more choice in bikes.
My wife is also short and I plan to get her a Suzuki S40 (Savage).

Just measured her up...28" inside leg.

Mmm that two inches will make a difference (as the actress said to the bishop), what is her experience level and class of licence?

That's not vertically challenged!! That's tall!!! :dodge: I don't even make 5ft. The Virago is a great bike!!! I will let Crashe tell you more about it's virtues. But really the best advice is to go to some bike shops and try out a variety of bikes.

We went to Mt Eden MC today and she tried a Virago on for size...height looked good but seemed kind of heavy for her...Any Virago riders with opinions?

Theres a range of bikes available for her.
Trying to think of the polite way to say this.
It ISNT the height alone ha hafta worry about its the height/width combo that stuffs people up.
Jorja is pretty VC she had a suzuki EN125 then moved onto a Scorpio.
You might also wanna look at the latest generation SR250 they look quite nice with a fairly "normal" riding position.
Dude gimme a yeodle -your lady can come try on Jorjas bike

Virago, GN250, TU250, SR250, Hyosung there's a fair bit of choice out there that will do the job and have not heard too many bad things about any of these popular models. Sounds like you are on the right track

I don't find it too heavy and it is actually very well balanced. I weigh about 50 kgs. The 250 Virago weighs 137 kg (dry weight). It looks heaps bigger than is actually is.

Thanks Frosty... My Ninja doesn't arrive until September so we'll be buying her bike then. I'll drop you a PM in a month or so. Appreciate the offer!

There is lots of choice but just try out them out first and I am sure she will find the perfect one for her. All the best.

I have mate who is exactly that size, she rides a kwak smoker. Was very cute when she sat on the fireblade, hehe :pinch:

KR150, RG150, FXR150 will do. GN250 will do aswell. Like frosty suggested, Scorpio would be a good option too (would be my pick of the bunch cause it has a boot start :D )

Yeah looking at a gn250...easy to ride. She hasn't got any manual bike experience. Think I'd better put her on a training course first. I did my learners training with them and they were great so I'll take her there I think.

Anyone know much about the Lifan Delta 250?

Hi - I'm under 5 foot too. Ended up on a Virago and lovin' it. I'd recommend sending her on a course too as it will give her a chance to try the important things (emergency braking) in a safe environment. Watch out boys!

If she aint too keen on learnin how to use the feet for anything but walkin, hows about the Vespa 250? (adn shes already on a non-50cc scoot, so thought coudl throw this in anyhoos...)
They may cost a bit ($7k ish new?), but they are the only small-frame scooter above 125cc that I know of (production!!!), and being a 250cc, I thinks they do around 140kmh or so? Enuf to stay in range of your mirrors?
Or there are other rarer Euro options like the Gilera DNA (180cc 2strokes) or the Cagiva Raptor (125cc 2strokes)

If only them proddys could/would squeeze a 650 or so into a small frame scoot... :headbang:

I am only 5ft 1" and I find the Ninja 250 R to be easy to handle height wise as well as weight wise. You can buy lowering kits for bikes. Its just a matter of going into the bike shops and having a look at whats around and getting her to sit on them to see how it feels height and weight wise. Im sure she will find a bike that she will be happy with eventually. Goodluck.

I think it mostly comes down to experience on a bike, cauz i had a yammie R6 an I only got 27" legs (on the inside). Of course i had issues when stopping on off camber roads etc, but u just get used to finding flat ground to stop on.
Go with a bike you feel comfortable with!! :niceone:

If that upsets you, this is going to bring your world crashing down (especially as its from a woman....):

I have a Kawa VN250 that is a fantastic machine - seat height is very low.

Not exactly a speed machine but get along at 110 OK

So happens I am selling mine soon:whistle:

From my experinces Rg150 are quite short bikes compared to most, try out one of these and see how it goes. Plus good ol two stroke doesent hurt either :devil2:

hi.

ima short guy.. stand at about 4 foot 11, ( i mayb short but its not my legs that are holding me up)

i ride a vl250 intruder. all i did was lower the front forks a little.. and modified the seat. so reduced the height a little.. cause i aint at all the heavy.. i found the intruder to be lower and also alot lighter then the virago.. and boy does she fly when im on it.. not much weight at all lol.. i found it easy to mange when it was stock standard but since modification of forks and seat can now be safer when stoping and the camber of the road is not level.. but yea.. never let ya height stop ya from riding. haha

Wrong and wrong. The Virago has the same seat height and is 10kg lighter, the new V-Star is the same weight with a lower seat.
