Gday folks
First time posting in the forum and have been lurking for a week or so. Have never ridden a bike or had family members who have owned bikes so am a complete novice. However, for some unknown reason I have decided (yet to convince the missus though) that I would like to try getting a bike/licence to ride.
OK firstly a little knowledge about me.
I am 34 (was gunna say middle aged but didnt want to offend anyone who was older and considered themselves as young :P )
I am, as the topic noted, a fat bastard of over 110 kgs but of average height.

What I am wanting suggestions for are what sort of bikes should I be looking for to suit myself. I am looking for a more commuter/cruising style bike rather than a speed machine, but still be capable of 110km/hr as I commute from Cambridge to Hamilton daily.

I would think that I will need to go to the higher limit of engine capacity for hauling my ass around so have been looking around at gn250's but dont know what else is available or suitable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers
Gabe

Maybe as you have never ridden a 250 Trail bike may be a good option first up,time spent out in a paddock or similar learning to ride is all good stuff for a beginer, the bonus is that there pretty hardy and if you have the odd whoopsie it doesnt cost to much, hook up with someone who has been riding awhile and see if they will spend some time with you.Good luck and welcome.

sure is, now that's three sportbike riders - recommending a trail bike as your first bike.

Surely that must be a KB record!!!!

If you want to get started on sportbike riding, then you need one of these ;

They are sprung reasonably well for us fatties. Welcome to road biking. You're going to like this. ;)

For a man your size needing a 250 you could look at any of these:

Suzuki GSX250 twin (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Tourers/auction-163920700.htm).

Suzuki GSF250 4-cylinder (Bandit) (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Tourers/auction-141718974.htm)

Hyosung GT250R twin (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-162615561.htm)

All are full size bikes easily fitting you and are easy to ride.

And if you weigh 40KG it'll be like riding a bouncy castle... that's really bouncy...

In other words, you'll get a sore ass from the hard suspension - so I've been told. Now that I have a learner's license I really should take one for a spin. :apint:

Might add, not interested in a road registerable trail bike but thanks for the suggestion anyhow. Also have no handy paddocks/friendly farmers known to me.

I will have to go to a riding school for the initial lesson then maybe illegally practice (quiet cul de sac and friendly neighbours) before I attempt the BHS test

Did try to pm <rhino> but couldnt due to lack of posts required. Anyone happen to know where theres a handy thread to spam??? j/k

Thanks for the tip DB but looking for more of a cruiser. "EDIT" Or are the suggestions for sports orientated bikes more in general as they have much better performance for hefting larger weights?

In that case I'd say go for a GN250, SR250 etc as they should do that commute ok have low seat height which will help with confidence as you'll be able to plant both feet firmly on the ground. The other good thing is they have a really good second hand market so will be easy to move on once you've decided (and you will..) to get something bigger/better/faster/stronger etc

Yep I've heard good things about the Hyosungs - guy at work has one of the cruisers. The only possible negative would be at the resale end, I'd imagine they wouldn't command as good a resale price as the Jap bikes, though that could change the more there are out there getting good rep.

how about a Yamaha XV 250 Virago. or a Suzuki VL250 K7 Boulevard. or Honda magna 250.
stay away from any thing chinese, they are cheap for a reason.

Oh... well I will PM him and get him to look in on this thread. He is a big fella and after looking around he has chosen the Hyosung GV250 as his first bike as they seem to be the biggest of the 250cc cruisers around (Cruisers are DEFINITELY the way to go and dont let ANYBODY tell you any different :bleh:).

Of course he will probly upgrade to something suitably larger when he gets his full but for now he is riding it daily to and from work (30 min commute each way) and is loving it.

That's what I ride, and I'm around 112kgs. It handles daily commuting just fine. Will sit at 110k's all day if you want to. I was also worried about finding a bike that would handle my weight, but I've never had any trouble with power over hills or into head-winds, etc.
Can be found reasonably cheap for a 250 too. Not too sporty a riding position either, although its still not a cruiser. Just go to a few bike shops and sit on different styles to find something comfy.

From your description it sounds like you are looking for an entry level 250cc cruiser.

My suggestions:

1) Suzuki VL250K7
To view: http://www.suzuki.co.nz/motorcycles/bike.gallery/vl250k7.m.jpg
Price (RRP) $5995

2) Hyosung GV250 Aquila
To view: http://www.hyosung.co.nz/model.php?id=8
Price (RRP) $6290

My first choice would definately be the Suzuki because the build quality, the lower price and the styling.

Yep I would deffinately reccomend a Hyosung GV250, check my profile for pics.

I'm well over your stated weight, 6'1" and more than comfortable on the bike, I can cruise at 110kph but generally sit between 90-100 or with the general flow of traffic (I know on a L plate I shouldn't but find that people do stupid shit to get past you when you travel at the 'legal' 70kph)

I was a bit dubious at first about getting a name brand I have never herd of but research proved that they were good bikes and this far I have had no problems. Have a look at Trade Me there are a few on there at reasonable prices.

They are a biggest cruisers you'll get at 250cc. Any questions just ask.

Thy Hyo GV250 would be the best bet methinks. Enough grunt (just barely), cruiser style etc.

EDIT: Gash, maybe I should have read pages 2 and 3 first.
