got an early evo electrglide

had it about 12 years has proved to be about 99% reliable and far better than any othe rbike I have ever owned

have ridden it around nz, around the states and around europe

its worth fu*k all as nobody wants this model

I just don't ride it any more, done about 500 miles on it over the last 12 months as I have other priorities and other bikes

takes up too much room in the garage

basically it only really gets used properly about once every 2-3 years when I get to a european rally

should I

sell it

break it for parts

chop it and use it as the basis for a custom bike

moth ball it

do nothing and just use it when I can't be bothered getting anything else out of the shed

ideas and suggestions

let's see it!
how much would you want for it - if you found a good home for it?

Leave it on the street in view of a time lapse camera, and take sweeps on how long it takes to go missing.
Anywhere in the norf island, 9 hours.
South island 72 hours.

He did say early EVO so it may date back to 84,

Still, There are plenty of punters who would jump all over a cheapish HD so it must be worth at least 9 or 10 grand.....

Keep it till its classed as a classic and then hock it off for BIG dollars to someone with more money than sense... or give it to me and I will store it as a 'project' :msn-wink:

lol I can only dream of owning a machine like that.....
Dont cut it up. sell it There are many people that would love to have one.
Just be realistic on the selling price.
Thats a real bike.

Stick it on trademe with a low starting bid and a very "optimistic" reserve - the auction probably won't make the reserve but you'll get an idea of interest and price and the low start will probably draw a few bidders out of the woodwork.

Then you can think about whether or not you really want to sell it.

Shit, if it was an 84' buy it for 9 grand :)

1984 was a magical year for me.

And unfortunately I don't have the cash to get a harley 10K+ without putting it on finance and I ain't planning on being in debt!

its an 86, I'll post a pic later, its got the early last 70's slab side tank off the tourglide

mileage is 250,000km

advertised it once in the uk at £3500 did not get a single call

going rate on fleabay for early 90's glides is under £4000

Sell it and let some one else enjoy the ownership. Would a evo glide be a suitable donor for a custom?

Bren

i will take it off yer hands....for a fee!

Hell yeah - keep it as a glide and bling the S&S out of it. Performance machine wheels, bose stereo, flame job.

Jack it up, set of fournales and a front end tweak and in the right hands they gets along.

Yeah I know I'd take it - keep it as my rally bike, and muscle up the v4 for shows

Hell yeah, Damn cool.

I'd do what Dave suggested, Or maybe just an engine rebuild with a few performance tweaks, a full paint and polish, new seat. She be the badness.

Though I like her just the way she is.

, Or maybe just an engine rebuild with a few performance tweaks, a full paint and polish, new seat..

engine rebuild ??? why it runs fine as it is nice flat torque curve with 77ftlbs torgue on the dyno and 67 hp at the rear wheel, had ev27 cam & S&S carb fitted 12 years ago, and about 5 years ago got a 5 angle valve grind and skimmed heads 30 thou to bump compression - to get any more power is serious money and less rideability - tried a ev46 cam it was great at 80 plus mph but bottom end power suffered

paint??? yes but there are acres of plastic and I have other projects to spend money on

new seat?????? it has FXRP seat which is sprung independantly to the frame to give about 1/2" movement these seats are just about the most comfortable seat you can get, why change to something that would be less comfortable

Fair enough then.......

Sounds like it deserves to be ridden by someone who could enjoy it rather then be parted out.

Meanie
6th July 2008, 20:41
Keep it if you can, otherwise sell it to someone who will ride it
I realy wish id have kept some of my old bikes
I dont like to see any bike pulled to bits for parts unless its totaly stuffed

have decided to keep this bike and give it a birthday

complete ground up rebuild starting with complete strip down and repainting the frame

anybody got any advice for curing the weave these bikes get at 85mph plus, it used to, about 60 thousand miles ago be dead stable at these speeds, now it feels inherently unstable

apart from new wheel bearings, rubber engine mounts, steering head bearings and swingarm bearings as anybody got any ideas

I know there's a lot of enthusiasm on some of the HD touring forums for add-on stabilisers like this one (http://www.twrbaggersplus.com/stabilizer_kits_1995.html) due to perceived issues with the way the motor mount & swing arm interact. I say perceived because it seems to be a bit controversial, some claim it's unnecessary and some say adding a stabiliser has transformed their bike (see threads like this (http://www.hdforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=222345)). I don't know enough about the actual mechanical bits involved to even begin to have an opinion. I do know the pro-stabiliser faction point to the frame redesign of the 09 tourers as vindication that there was a problem that needed addressing.

I don't know if this is related to the problem you're experiencing - the guy linked above only makes his kits for 1997 model year and above, so possibly the issue doesn't apply to earlier bikes.

thanks Horse for the info, the kit won't fit my bike (86) but the idea can be easily replicated / copied
