View Full Version : The week from hell and how to make it better

Friday night we received the news of our much loved friend's death (Zukin). Totally shocked and stunned, we headed off on Saturday on our planned
"Rescue Helicopter Fundraiser " ride, made all the more poignant by Scott being transported by the Auckland chopper and the fact that he had helped so much to organise our ride. We reeled through the weekend doing our best to support Carissa and her family.
On Tuesday I got news that my daughter was in ED at the local hospital. We headed over there to hear that she had had a brain haemorrhage and was in a critcal conditon. She would need to fly to Wellington..on Wednesday morning we were both loaded on to the chopper and in foul weather headed down. They don't carry support people in the chopper, but for some reason they allowed me to go. Apparently they had learned of our involvement in the ride on Saturday and made an exception...we are truly grateful, as I could not have made the journey in the car on the amount of sleep I had had over the last few days.
Here is where the story gets better.
The great community that is KB sprang into action with messages of love, support, prayers and hope. I got texts for Africa, and could not possibly reply to them all. John and Zac were well supported by our fantastic HB crew and our lovely Welly friends phoned me, visited the hospital, transported me, plied me with coffee, hugs and anything else I needed. Our Akl friends sent their love and support via txt, email and PM.
We were held up when life was really tough, we got hugs through the ether and felt loved and valued and never alone.
We could have got through this last week without all that...but not in as good a shape as we are in.
Your strength amazes me, your love humbles me, your care was ever so gratefully received.
Rather than replying to everyone individually, I thought I would put this post on so the entire KB community can be aware of what a very special place this is.
You know who you are..we love you guys heaps.
I am back in HB for a few days, Emma is still in Welly, being visited by KBers in my absence. She is over the worst (for now) but still has a long way to go. We hope to see her back in HB hospital towards the end of next week to carry on her recuperation.
From the bottom of our hearts, thankyou KB!

She's good today. Sitting up and having a few laughs. Still in a darkened room but that'll pass. Awesome improvement since Wednesday. The doc said she'll be allowed up and into a wheelchair this arvo so I expect to see her hooning round the ward when I get back afetr rugby!
Mikey is being a good boy and keeping her occupied too...

It's not just about :ride: and :drinknsin
Really good to see the community kicking in to action and doing what communities are meant to do - support each other.
Big ups to you for holding it together, not doubt it was tough, you and your family will be better for it in the long run!

And with posts like that, is it any wonder that good people rally round you.
Your amazing Lady.
Beset with major worries of your own, you take the time to remember Scott and his family and to thank, well pretty much everyone.
Bless ya sweetheart, look after yourself during this godawful trying time and here's hoping Emma makes a swift and full recovery.
Haven't got a spuggin clue what I can do to help but I'm only a pm away if I can assist in any way.
All the best. Martin.x

Update: Emma was up having a shower this morning!!
2 days ago, she was flat on her back and not allowed to even sit up.
This is incredible progress, and I can't help thinking that the prayers/good vibes are working. I guess we'll have our girl back in the Bay soon.
Thank you all, again.

Latest news is she is likely to be transferred back to Hastings Hosp tomorrow.
Her improvement has been stunning, esp when we know what could have happened, and the more likely (initial) recovery time.

Glad to hear the KB crew was there for you when you needed support, but with the type of person you are, who wouldn't be there for you?
