Just to note. A picture of your bike parked in your driveway does not make for a good calendar picture. Big Dave has a post somewhere with instructions for taking a good bike pic.
Yup and washing on the line or scrappy building material etc in the background does not cut it either - I was stunned at how much of this I used to get with submissions... :girlfight:
edit: Even got one with the dog taking a dump on the grass next to the bike.... errrr ok!

You plumping for 300dpi, landscape only, minimum 3000pixels wide etc? Or you just going to sort them out when they arrive?

Presumably you preferably want the raw digital camera data, and any cropping, colour adjustment, etc will be done during layout?

I'd prefer to look at lower res proof images first (say 1024px) and make contributors aware that the full size image has to be available if it's selected.
If you don't have the wherewithal to resize and stuff - then just bung it through anyway.
Not my call though.

I think the concept and the idea is great and the people do an amazing job ..............blah blah ( get that outta the way)
But
maybe not a GN250.
Is it a calender for bikes or egos? if bikes I want to see some inspirational bikes race bikes, action shots, project bikes completed that look great, whitetrash knee down, parking a GN250 infront of a lake and making it april well snoooooooorrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeee (not sure if that was the shot but thats my memory)
never brought a calender as they arent very ........well ........cool to say the least.
So make them cool and they will sell.

The only problem with that is you won't know if it's "cool" or not until you've bought one.
The big problem is one person's idea of cool might do absolutely nothing for the next person, you get caught between a rock and a hard place trying put one of these things together and I think by and large the effort "photo" wise on last years calendar was pretty good really and the effort in putting it altogether was unreal!
I think there is definitely a place for static shots provided the scenery and bike are interesting enough.
When was the last time you picked up a calendar in a shop and really like every photo? Can't remember the last time I found a calendar like that. Can't please all the people all the time, if you could you'd be rolling in money that's for sure.

Sorry couldnt help me self. Yeah I know and youre right to, I just wanted to cast an opinion.
Its got to be inspiring thats all, if you want people to pay money, its got to be good. When I turn the page to a new month and see a GN I kinda think thats not really the way to go, but yes each to their own for sure.
Quasi we chose the shots, so we can please all riders not just the sports bike boys - variety is what we were after... sorry if we did not meet your expectations.
That GN was voted in by all people who had a vote, it was not just one persons opinion... So it stayed!

FWIW Joni, I liked that pic. Like you so rightly state, not everyone has a super fast sprotsbike. Some members here are just starting out and their mighty GN is their pride and joy!
The sale of these calendars help to fund the site, I have no problem paying a bit of money to do so.
Now if you want a couple of suggestions on how it would work better in our household, as in being able to read the numbers without walking right up to it and being able to write on the dates, then whistle out. Still no complaints. I always thought this was a site for all NZ motorcyclists, therefore the KB calendar should reflect that statement.
Good luck Cajun! PM me if you need any help.

Traditionally, it is a calendar about KBers, for KBers. From that point of view, it is very successful. If you want a narrow-minded, bike type specific calendar, I'm sure you'll find something better in the shops.

FWIW, I actually thought the GN shot was very nicely done. So what that it is a GN, for a whole lot of people it is one of their earliest rides and probably holds some sentimental value... and on the other side it was one of the cleanest bikes I have EVER seen! The owner should be proud ;)
And I for one get a bit sick of seeing plastic all the time, racebikes are nice but they often look the same: different bike & racer but same look. So go for some unusual angles in your shots if you want to be considered ( I like the top down one this year), or some good KB group race shots...
I loved the dirt shot too, that was probably my fav shot, and I am not into dirt bikes... who cares what sort of bike it is honestly? I take the skill of the photographer anyday on capturing a great moment, over some staged pic... tho they can be nice too.
Get out there people and do ya damndest to get some great shots, you've got till October (I think? Cajun?) ...and if you have any ideas/things you'd like to see, send us those ideas as well. We wont necessarily be able to do many things but can look into it anyway.
Cheers people!

I realise what its about raising money for KB, as a long time financal contributor to KB I understand this, BUT
How much profit did this calender make after costs ??
And because it is the traditional way, is it the best way, has it achieved the best leverage of KB member dollars, or can it be refined to increase the sales ???
I dunno, Im not involved in it, just trying to offer some opinion constructively.
Im not fighting FFS
How much profit did this calender make after costs ??Just under a $1000.00... and that means its quite a few months of KB expenses for Spank! So does it do what is needed? Yes... I think so! :Police:

9th July 2008, 20:31
oh yeah and the shots dont have to be recent ones... if you have an awesome shot from a while back send it in.
I like to see a bit of variety in the calendar, after all it really is meant to have something that most people on KB will like, so it has to cater to HUGELY varied tastes.
And from what I have seen over the last few years, its more about raising KB awareness to non kbers and giving ya something nice (and with a kiwi motorbike flavour) to put on your wall (and for your workmates to comment on... believe me I get quite a few good comments from it) than just about raising money.

Good excuse to clean my bike I guess. Maybe this can be the first picture of a Hyosung in a Calender anywhere, ever.

Does it matter how much profit was made? Maybe you should do one. You could have the great Sportsbike calendar with Whitetrash getting his knee down on every corner of Puke. :ride:

Would a photo of a Hyosung GT250R be seriously considered or should I stop wasting everyone's time?
I think it is THE bike for 2007-2008 as it is responsible for getting more people into biking then anything else during those years.

ANYTHING will be considered... dont dismiss your bike cos it is not one of the millions of GSXR's out there :msn-wink: Hey even a Buell made it one year
Just make it a good, interesting, focused and well composed shot. By well composed I mean NOT some tiny bike way off in the distance with lots of other stuff around distracting from it... and one that CAN be printed professionally, i.e. as high resolution as you can get it, mobile phone shots just wont cut it guys.
And of course anything like that shot of WT would be considered, they just gotta be submitted... FWIW, its a funky shot, I like it! :niceone:

Personally I wouldn't enjoy 12 months of race track shots. That's one aspect of riding that I have nothing to do with what-so-ever and so wouldn't appeal to me in the slightest.
My preference would be bike's out on the open road, major motorcycling roads etc.etc. A cruiser would be even better but that's just completely unlikely, who likes cruisers anyway?
I'll be interested to see what comes up! Can't say i'll be submitting anything myself with my bike having enough dents in it to make the moon blush, but I have a fancy expensive camera with the know-how to use it so if anyone would like some photos and lives in Auckland, give us a shout.

To be honest... its the shot that is important really. The focus is on a bike of some sort, yes, but it doesn't have to be the newest spankiest toy out there...
I really liked the triumph in the sunset? of this years calendar (funnily enough Julys image), had some people standing round the bike and was an excellant capturing of the moment: people, bikes, chilling.
And for the record we had several cruiser pics this year.
I have an image in my mind now... a motorcycle graveyard, all sorts of old vintage bikes in various stages of repair, bit like Burt Munroes backyard. So someone get out there and do it... imagination people! :2thumbsup
And Nagash... take that fancy camera and get some folks to work with ya.

A jolly good prezzie to hand out as well!

Yo Cajun.
Is there a set date when the entries close, so those who havent done anything yet can do so and know how long they have.
I'll have February thanks

are there going to be a sample calender so we see what photos are in it before buying the calender or will it be kinda a pot luck thing.

The idea is is to raise funds for the site from what I understand.
So if there are no EMUs you wont buy one....? I have submitted a photo but will stilll buy one even if it doesnt make the grade.

what ever gave you that idea? I am not expecting my submissions to make it into the calender. Would be good if they did but I wont be stomping round if they dont.
Just wondering we are going to get a preview, thats all.

Yeah.
I'll get 1 calendar but if as in last year I knew one of my photos was in it I'd get 5 or more again.

And all those people whose photos didn't get in probably wouldn't buy any and then it wouldn't be viable

There's been a few people in the past that have said I'll buy xxx-amount if my pic is in there otherwise I won't buy any

Or people may say, I've already seen the pics now I dont need to buy one
No matter what way it is done it wont keep everyone happy, I'll be getting at one anyway regardless of whats in it simply to support the site

I just emailed 3 low res entries. they will need tweaking, but good shots methinks.

I would imagine that if the pictures are so average (and I am not saying they are or arent average because I havent seen them) that looking at them in low res on a computer screen is enough that you dont want them hanging on the wall (ie, by buying the calender) then there should be better pictures selected.

No, that's not what he's saying. The couple of times that I've been a Mod while the calendar process was run, the Waambulance calls because someone's photo wasn't in the calendar were overwhelming.
It got nasty and personal too, and Joni had to wear all the flak for that. Quality isn't the issue.

Its easy to tell if your photo will be in it. Did you get asked for full quality version of your photo? I wasn't :crybaby:

That doesn't work if you sent high quality shots in the first place.
