Had to pry the back door open on Mrs Donors car this morning.
Apparently it reached -.7 in Runciman around 0600
Was refreshing, but had to trade the jandles in for gumboots...

Didnt strike any but I was fairly certian it was out there.
Got to be the heavyist frost I have seen in Auckland in the last 6 years I have been here. God it almost reminds me of a Waikato morning back on the farm (only warmer).

i hope you guys are ok up there and your fluffy coffees are alright?
you know its a proper frost down here when you have to scrape 5mm of ice off your door handle just to open the car, then when you go try and squirt your windscreen you find out the hose has frozen.

How does that differ from your summers? It's so cold up here in the semi-tropical area we are in that the foam on my double trim, one non-sugar sweetend, organically grown by virgin nuns, decafe latte would hardly even move! :2guns:

OMG WTF how did you survive that? :shit:
Btw - gumboots are probably the second worst footwear for cold and icy conditions, only beaten by the sandal ;)

It's on mornings like this that you notice gaps in your gear! I didn't quite have my neck warmer tucked into my helmet at the front - I think I have frostbite on my chin! :cold:
Oh well, time for a nice fluffy coffee to warm up :D

There was a layer of ice on the timber decking outside the bike shed this morning.
Twas a bit dicey moving the bike as my feet were sliding all over the show.
Then the bastard thing didn't want to start for 10 minutes.

I normally hold the front of the neckwarmer in my teeth until the helmet is on and done up. Mmm, toasty-warm chin!

Great idea, but that coffee could be, well, heavens forbid, just coffee! Damn, you bloody provincials, when are you going to get it?
Remember, being a true Aucklander, I will only drink PC, Aunty Helen, Sue "slap me harder bitch" Bradford approved coffee.
You know, the kind that is taxed more than the value of the original beans, grown in organic soil, devoid of any chemicals, as well as having to be packed in hermetically sealed non-gm produced 100% cotton sacks, picked by certified virgin (non-denominational of course) nuns, all who have been tested thoroughly to ensure they're microbe free.
Tea sounds better really.... WITH MARSHMALLOWS!

Auckland needs weather like Taupo's.
A few more darkies in hoodies culling themselves from the herd (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10520487) in hockey fields would do a power of good around these parts.

Yeah I normally use that technique too. In fact I did it when I left home but then stopped for petrol along the way and forgot the correct cold-weather procedure - probably because I was still stunned by the fact it cost me $25 to fill my little Volty's tank!
By the way Swoop have you got any tips for not rubbing off your lip gloss when you do that? Happens every time.

Errm... Malcolm was academically talented, popular, played rugby league, wanted to be a lawyer when he left school and had never been in trouble with the police.
Sounds like he was a role model to other young people and a loss to his family and community. How are the colour of his skin and the fact he had a hood on his sweatshirt relevant?
RIP young man.

Try riding to Hawkes Bay on Saturday and back yesterday evening.
Pilot Powers go pretty well in snow.

Riding in snow is OK.
As long as it's either fresh, or very old. If it's melted and refrozen it's a bit slippy.
Riding when it's snowing is a bit more tricky. Last time I did it I had the conundrum (like a condom, but has more of a bang) of whether to have my visor up or down: down = covered in snow, visor fogged up; up = helmet filled with snow, eyes fogged up.

What 'e said.

Still what 'e said. It's a bitch on the visor innit.
Oddly enough, the only snowing-snow I rode through on the weekend was on SH1, north of Taupo. Haven't seen snow on or around road level there before. By the time we got to the Napier-Taupo road, it was just clear skies and picture-postcard drifts alongside the tarmac. No visible grass, etc.
I stopped, wanting to take a picture of Betty in the snow, but Jody was unwilling to take her glubs off and get her cameraphone out from under fifteen layers of zipped-up jacketybits.

That's not very sporting. I hope you severely chastised her for that. :spanking:
I saw a guy on a Guzzi up at Whakapapa skifield in midwinter once. He said he "was just having a look around", but I saw him on the ski slopes in his bike gear later.

I used to work in Montana. It would get to 50 degrees below 0 (f), without taking into account the 120kph wind, blowing snow. Made the nipples hard for sure.
Auckland's pretty temperate, but it's a joke when people call this semi-tropical.

Heh, it was a timely reminder from Donor this morning before I beetled to his place ... he mentioned ice and summit but I fergits.
Anyhoos, firing up the Big Ol'Hornet and backing it out, I remembered his words of caution.
When I stuck my foot down, it went skating on a patch o'ice :eek5: fortumately, I was well prepared and with a slight skip in the heart beat, saw off that first hazard! :sweatdrop
Did make me dang cautious and I avoided the shaded bits on the road and any suspicious glitter on it. I think it may be time to pull out the ol'thermals again! :cold: and some HTFU pills!

Hmmm...
Reminds me of when I lived in Chch. One morning was reeeeeaaaalllly cold, and I thought, "That's strange - there's no frost..."
Girded my loins to take the VF500 to work, and got as far as the road, before realising everything was frozen, but so skillfully as to be invisible. No glittery bits thoughtfully sprinkled by The Frost God.
The Dreaded Black Ice. :eek5:
I did a very careful u-turn (with dangly feet), and took the 4WD. Even that was a-slippin' and a-slidin'....

went for a jog yesterday morning early and my legs kept trying to do the splits. So yes it was icey - first time I've seen more then a good frost here. Funny though hearing all us aucklanders complain about this marginally cold morning, while half the south island is covered in snow and no ones complaining there.

Frost in Auckland, really, no rearly. Hell I'm still driving through snow just to get to work after last weekend.
One year we went to the Brass where there was a -14 frost. The following monday I had to be in Texas for work where it was +36. The locals couldent understand why I was having problems with the heat as to them it wasnt summer yet.
