View Full Version : BOP Cruisy ADV ride - Late August

Rosie
11th July 2008, 20:43
Clint640 is moving out of his lakeside abode at the end of August. I already had some plans for a BOP adventure ride based at his place, and now I have to organise it before he moves out.

Sooo... the ride will be on August 30th & 31st

The general plan is to make it a two day affair, taking in some cafes, hot pools and interesting (but not technical/difficult) gravel roads around the Rotorua lakes and western BOP. I'm no speed demon :sweatdrop so novice adv riders don't have to fear being left behind.

There are a reasonable number of spare beds, and heaps of lakeside camping space at Chez Clint.

More details will be posted here, and on the calendar (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1680&day=2008-8-30), as they come to hand.

Edit: We are meeting up at Clint's place a bit before 10am on Saturday, heading to Okere Falls Store, where we will meet up with everyone else at 12 for lunch, aiming to get going at 1pm.
Remember that there isn't any fuel at Okere Falls, so you'll have to fuel up in Rotorua or Paengaroa beforehand.

Since I've been working far too hard of late, I had Wednesday and Thursday off work.

I waited for the frost to thaw on Wednesday morning, and sat in the sun overlooking lake Rotoiti for a while, to prewarm myself and my gear.
Armed with 5 litres of extra fuel, some A3 printouts of 1:50 000 topomaps, and a meatloaf sandwich from the Okere Falls Store, I headed out into the unknown.

The topomap doesn't distinguish between legal roads and forestry roads, so I was expecting to be doing a bit of back tracking and exploring during the day.

Surprisingly, almost all the roads I had planned to ride, do actually exist, and have public access. There were some bits I couldn't get through, but I found suitably scenic and interesting detours.

More details to come :D

Rosie
22nd August 2008, 16:24
Here is the general plan:

For those who wish to stay on Friday night, we will be having Spaghetti Bolognese. I have one (1.5 l) bottle of red wine. Feel free to bring more.

Saturday morning Chef640 will prepare some breakfast, then we will make our leisurely way along some gravel roads to the Okere Falls Store for lunch. Those not staying on Friday, have the option of meeting us at Clint's place in the morning, or meeting at Okere Falls at lunchtime (exact times to be announced later).

After lunch we will make our way through the interesting roads that I was exploring on Wednesday, stopping at Matata to refuel bikes and riders. On the way back to Chez640 we will stop for a dip in some natural hot springs.
Dinner on Saturday night will be bangers-bacon-and-bean casserole, with kumara and potato mash, followed by fruit sponge and cream. We'll have some beer on hand, and there is a general store that sells booze that we will be passing on Saturday evening, if people need additional supplies.

Sunday morning we'll have a leisurely breakfast, and make our way to Okoroire for lunch.

Those who have a modest fuel range (less than 200k's) should carry extra fuel. The area isn't exactly remote, but there aren't too many petrol stations around.
There is no fuel at Okere Falls store, or particularly close to Clint's place, so make sure you fuel up before the ride - Rotorua, and Paengaroa have the closest petrol stations, coming from the South and North respectively.

So, keep registering, and let me know where/when you'll be turning up :D

Paula is still 50/50 but all going well will most likely meet you at Okere Falls store as will be coming down from Alk Sat morning.

However should Paula have had enough on the ride down would it be ok for her to stay at Chez640 while we wonder the countryside?

Cool. The weather forecast for the weekend is looking good.:2thumbsup Paula is most welcome to kick back at the lake house while we are out for the afternoon.

Hey Rosie, how do I find Clint's place ?

HI mate, see the attached map - it's at Hauparu Bay on Rotoiti, 9km from the SH30/SH5 intersection coming from Rotorua, or 2km from Ruato Bay coming the other way. Look for the house with 919 on it, the driveway starts there & goes back towards Rotorua semi paralell with the road. Go all the way to the end of the driveway, stay left.

Cheers

We may have to organise the Mk II ride over summer, once it's warm enough for camping.

We now have official Meeting Times.
We'll head off from Clint's place (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1702566&postcount=39) a bit after 10. People are welcome to come round early for a tea or coffee beforehand. It looks like it should be a good morning for it.
We'll meet up with everyone else at Okere Falls Store at 12pm for lunch, aiming to be on the road again by 1pm.

Don't forget that there isn't any fuel at Okere Falls, you'll need to fuel up in Rotorua or Paengaroa, depending on the direction you are going in.

Let Clint640 know if you need a bed on Saturday night.

We have lots of nice food planned for Saturday night and Sunday morning. $10 each for those staying on Saturday should cover the food costs. We do have some beer on hand, and will be passing a liquor outlet not far from Clint's place on Saturday afternoon.

I was looking forward to this but now the weather is clearing I have had people booking my rides. So stuff it all- now I have to work. I know its not real work but I was keen to meet some KBer people.
Once the weather gets good I will be busy most weekends with my own adventure tours, last summer I rode 3 days a week at least but only got to do one other ride.

So ladies and gents, have a great weekend around the lakes and stay upright!
I'll keep an eye on here for other rides coming up and make every effort to be there.

Rosie I will meet everyone at Okere Falls at 12ish. There is a chance I will stop at Clints on the way there and dump my gear (I am worried about those narrow gaps that a car can squeeze through but I can't!).

Do I need to keep anything for the afternoon ride (hot pools?)

I have Clint's cell phone number so will text if there are any delays etc.

Mark - I will have the medicinal rum (you want to grab the coke!!)

Rosie

Yes, you will need some swimming attire if you want to have a soak in the hot pools. And a towel.

The hot pools are a shallow stream/pool/pond in a paddock on the side of the road. The water is nice and hot, but, like any free hot pools, you get what you pay for facilities-wise.

Rosie, approx riding time please from the turn off to Blue and Green Lakes to the Falls?

Probably around 20 minutes, maybe more or less, depending of traffic. The Okere Falls Store is very easy to find, there is a 70km area labelled 'Okere Falls' and the store is on the main highway (SH 33), opposite the lake. Since the weather forecast is very good, we'll probably sit out the back, in the beer garden.

WHAT YA DO is rightlick on ya picure- select 'resize' and then choose small and it will give yu another copy at the end of your folder. use that one to post. or resize them in your internet photohost- similar deal.

1) It doesn't look much in this pic but on way over yesterday I stopped on the Whakamaru Dam and they were spilling water (must be heaps in the waikato at the mo if they are doing that) and I tell you this was bigger than any water slide
2 and 3) Normally for KB rides I pack heaps of wet weather gear but you can tell from these two pics that I should have packed my sunglasses. On the coast just north of that place that got flooded badly (Matata?) north of Whakatane. Clint and Mark took time out here to try a bit of beach riding.
4) What does a man do, I wanted smooth, straight, well groomed roads. This is what chasing a young woman around the Bay of Plenty leads to, BRING IT ON!

1) It is hard to tell from this pic but this is the hot pool we stopped at, you can just see people in the water past the bikes and through the steam. A nice way to unwind at the end of the day.
2) Clint knew what we wanted and when we got to his "lakeside retreat" the beers were nicely chilled.
3) Tony feeling a wee bit sleepy and it looks as though Mark is heading that way to!
4) Only two words for this photo - kitchen and bitches. Seriously, good food thanks Rosie and Clint.
