View Full Version : Best funeral songs

Inspired somewhat by a couple of recent threads. If you could be a fly on the wall at your own funeral, which songs would you pick for maximum comedic effect? Bad taste essential.
I think it somewhat depends on whether you're being cremated or buried, but:
Chris Rea - Highway to Hell
Doctor & the Medics - Spirit in the Sky
If buried, to be played as the coffin descends:
Going underground - The Jam
Down down, deeper and down - Status Quo
If cremated, to be played as the coffin slides into the oven
Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Meat Puppets - Lake of Fire
I'm on Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
Any more ideas?

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
"If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change. "

Carried Leons Coffin in to Time - Pink Floyd, Reflective song was Ride on - Ac/Dc and Carried Coffin out to Badd to the Bone. Stevie Raye was also a choice, The Sky is crying (as it rained from the moment Leon died for a couple of days hard) or Riviera Paradise (or whatever its called)
Dark Side of the Moon is an extremely emotional CD for me now days - and If I could sing, I would sing Great Gig in the Sky, but it just sounds like a swung cat out of my vocal cords...

THE LEADER OF THE PACK. Can't recall who sang this.
I was always impressed with the 'dirge' that was played at Diana's funeral.
Me I'm bit partial to the bagpipes. Attended my Auties funeral many years back in Dunedin. It was a cold, bitterly cold day at the Dunedin cemetary and a southerly was whipping up the sea. Low cloud and sea fog masked the white caps foaming out as far as the eye could see. Then this lone piper played a lament. Tear jerking stuff I tell ya.

Great songs, but I'd like to think of my fueral being a big party to celebrate things I've accomplished.
I should prolly start trying to acheive something, wonder if staying on my race bike for the rest of the season counts, given my recent efforts I'm pretty sure people would be proud of me not arsing off.

THUNDERSTRUCK--AC/DC ?Ooooohhh, good one! maybe the razors edge too for good measure. (I think it's not a bad commentry on todays society, but I have a habbit of missing the ppoint with these things.)
Listening to Godsmack as I type, and it's a bit bleak for celebrating life, but ideal for the cynics among us.

Perfect for a child's funeral. George is a taxi driver in Wellington - when I caught his cab from the airport he played this for me. He's a gorgeous human being.

bad tatse? Violent Femmes - Country death songs (lyrics below)
I had me a wife, I had me some daughters.
I tried so hard, I never knew still waters.
Nothing to eat and nothing to drink.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.
Nothing for a man to do but sit around and think.
Well, I'm a thinkin' and thinkin', till there's nothin' I ain't thunk.
Breathing in the stink, till finally I stunk.
It was at that time, I swear I lost my mind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.
I started making plans to kill my own kind.
Come little daughter," I said to the youngest one,
Put your coat on, we'll have some fun.
We'll go out to mountains, the one to explore.
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door.
Her face then lit up, I was standing by the door.
Come little daughter, I will carry the lanterns.
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caverns.
We'll go out tonight, we'll go to the caves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.
Kiss your mother goodnight and remember that God saves.
A led her to a hole, a deep black well.
I said "make a wish, make sure and not tell and
Close you're eyes dear, and count to seven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.
You know your papa loves you, good children go to heaven.
I gave her a push, I gave her a shove.
I pushed with all my might, I pushed with all my love.
I through my child into a bottomless pit.
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.
She was screaming as she fell, but I never heard her hit.
Gather round boys to this tale that I tell.
You wanna know how to take a short trip to hell?
It's guarenteed to get your own place in hell.
Just take your lovely daughter and push her in the well.
Take your lovely daughter and throw her in the well.
Don't speak to me of lovers, with a broken heart.
You wanna know what can really tear you apart?
I'm going out to the barn, will I never stop in pain?
I'm going out to the barn, to hang myself in shame.
