Not a happy camper at all.

Riding down a hill in Albany to a roundabout. Silver car coming from my right in fog without lights on.

I'm going into the roundabout at 6o'clock exiting at 9'oclock. Because the silver car is coming fast and that the corner is off camber and there is always diesel from bastard buses - I decide not to push the corner and slow and stop. Sun is behind me so I cannot see anything in mirrors.

The car behind me looks at the gap and thinks 'I can make that' - so as I'm stopping they gun it - right into the back of my bike. I didn't see it coming.

This pushes me out in front of the car that I was giving way to - who luckily missed me.

Idiot driver who hit me then takes foot off brake (its an auto) and hits me a second time (slowly this time) - not cool.

Anyway I managed to keep the bike upright.

Her car went under the rear guard and hit the numberplate (its now as bent as carver), and hit the tyre and exhaust.

It looks like all is well - but taking it to Holshot for them to check if the wheel, swing arm or shart are damaged at all.

Worse - I'm waiting for my new helmet to arrive (due tomorrow) and I was riding with the helmet that I dropped last week (I feel like a wanker for that).

Sitting here - shaking still.

Just shows - Murphy's law (with he helmet) shit always happens at the worse possible time - that's part that has scared me most - that was in my control and I made a stupid decision that had the accident been worse I could have put myself in more danger - I really am kicking myself about that.

Other than that - I'm quite apprehensive about getting back on the bike to take it to Holshot - but fuck it I love riding and Im not going to let a knock put me off.

Stay safe all.

Man - Glad you are ok dude.

Some people have absolutely no idea (cager behind you). At least he cager coming for you managed to miss you.

Good to hear you're alright... That situation could have turned nasty really quickly.

Lucky - man, you didn't even drop the bike!

But yes, the helmet stunt wasn't too bright :bash: How about keeping a cheap spare?

I hope the bike will be all good - certainly you got all the drivers details just in case.

No no no ... it could be MUCH worse. Imagine if you had the N103 on and it got blemished! Just think, riding to Holshot is good, that means bike is checked and you can go riding with new comms.

Don't forget to get in touch when setting up the helmets

Good to hear you've had a little time to sort your thoughts out and get everything settled. Aye, could have been worse, so one of those things you have in your bag of experience (and withdrawing from your other bag o'luck!)

Hope the bike is okay and your heartrate has come back down to mere hyperventilation levels! :sweatdrop

Glad to hear you are okay.

Same sort of thing happened to me.

Please report it to the police. Charges could be coming the drivers way.
(The driver that struck me from behind was charged).

Rode mine straight back to the shop to get it checked out. Wise idea

Agreew th Dingoz .. you need to report the accident .. drivers who do that need to be charged!!!

I am so glad you are ok .. and that it wasn't the new 103 (although if it was that is what insurance is for)!!

Wow!
Glad you are okay, buy a lotto ticket.
hXc was hit from behind and the driver was charged...go to the cops.
No excuse for that level of carelessness.

Man, so very glad you're ok...

Being hit from behind is one of the most sickening experience.

I really hope there isn't too much damage, and I reckon that lunatic should seriously be reported to the powers that be.

Glad you're OK, Mr Tank, Sir.
It could've all been much more ugly.

I've only been hit from behind once on a bike, when someone did Eggs Zachary the same as 'your' cretin: assumed I was about to go, when I wasn't. Well, Duh! It was a stop sign, so I stopped. Didn't do anything to the bike - I parked it, got off and looked. They parked, got out of their car to have a look for themselves, while I rode off.

Hope your bike checks out OK.

Cripes, you must really be a tank to take a smack from behind and remain upright. Glad to hear your ok mate. My bloomin ex did the same to me, bike remained upright, wedged in the front bumper of my own car! If you can't trust yer own family, and she was my main pillion by the way, you can't trust any bugger.

Take it easy dude and ride again soon, all the best. :niceone:

Im not looking for any $$$ - only payment to have the bike checked out and any damage done to it. Its not a profit making exercise.

Lucky - man, you didn't even drop the bike!

Yeah - Im kinda happy with myself for keeping it upright - 260kgs would have been a issue should it had started gone over. I was pushed several meters forward - I reckon she hit me doing about 30km.

Yep - I got her details.

And yes - the helmet stunt was stupid. Im off to buy a cheap spare tomorrow when I collect the new one.

Gubb - I made comments in the N103 thread in bike gear. I cannot fit it :weep: the face is way closer then the N102 and I have to pull my jaw back just to fit it. But on the bright side - I picked up a Shark RSR2 full face - the reviews for that helmet are awesome - so Im pretty happy. Plus its really bright with reflectors - should make me more visable to silly cows in cages than my current matt black one.

Thanks for the offers of help BTW - really appreciated.

I hadnt thought of contacting the police - but you all who recommend it make a good point. Silly thing is her daughter rides a bike and was hurt by a cager - so apparently she is more aware of bikers ..... TUI.

So Ill lodge a compaint - I believe I have 48 hours for a no injury accident.

Cripes, you must really be a tank to take a smack from behind and remain upright.

yeah - but Im trying to lose weight.

Thanks for the nice comments BTW.

Update - Rode the bike to Holshot. First impressions are no damage - although it seems to make some new noises - Rob (workshop manager) is going to give it a good going over tomorrow.

But - no scary moments riding there or the loaner back (apart for not finding first on the loaner at the lights and quick panic that the car behind me was going to take off into my back) - so Ive not lost confidence in being able to ride (not to be mistaken for overconfidence). So on that front Im happy. Its true - you have to get back on that horse (or M50)

Personally, i'd like Katman to explain how this particular accident was your fault, and what you should have done to stop it from happening in the first place.

Im sure we will - to be honest Ive asked myself if there was anything I could have done differently - but I cannot think of anything (other than the helmet).

I've been hit from behind by a car at a roundabout too. A couple of years ago on my Zeal, it was. Identical situation; I gave way to an oncoming car and the driver behind me 'thought I'd already gone'.

(Oddly enough, it was at the roundabout about 200m down the road from the house I moved into two weeks ago. It's good to be back Out West...)

Anyway, he shunted me about a metre forward. Bike was fine, but his boss's Corolla had a big Pirelli-shaped dent smack in the middle of the front bumper for him to explain.

Good job, said I.

Glad to hear you're OK, Tank, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bike's fine too - an impact dead straight onto the back of it will probably not have distorted the frame or swingarm. (If the impact hadn't been dead straight on, I imagine that you'd have been knocked over.)

Not much we can do about this shit other than keep as aware as possible.

Stickchick and I barely escaped serious injury on Betty a couple of months ago when some idiot driver failed to see red lights on Esmond Road, locked up his brakes and skidded a good 10m out into the intersection. He'd been approaching from directly behind us and just managed to swerve out of that path before he lost all traction.

I try to always keep an eye on my mirrors, but sometimes there ain't much you can do to protect yourself from truly homicidal stupidity.

Reminds me of that quote "I missed my ex .... but I reversed up, tried again, and the next time I hit him"...

I've been hit from behind

Crikey - always had my suspicions .....

Seriously though, am so glad you're ok Tank. I understand the sick feeling you have when you think about your helmet, but everything is fine now - don't dwell on what might have happened

Pleased to hear you are OK and you got right back on again!

Roundabouts scare the :shit: out of me! Although I am woman and can multi task I struggle to look in all directions at roundabouts - and my mirrors are never looked at! :shit:

Don't worry about missing first gear on the loaner - you can pick it up on the way back! :2thumbsup

No good mate. Glad you kept it upright, and fingers crossed the damage is next to nothing.

Will add one more thing on my list of stuff to watch our for.

Griffin
14th July 2008, 13:40
I think its amazing how many people at roundabouts expect that even slight forward momentum from the vehicle in front means that it is going to proceed through... and so therefore take their eyes off of that vehicle and watch to their right ready to plant boot when the gap looks do-able only to plow into the back of the car / bike that has since come to a complete stop in front of them... its a BAD habit that way too many people have (including myself) and the consequences have the potential to be devastating.

The run of luck keeps going - I have managed to put 12 kms on the loaner since picking it up.

Like an idiot - I assumed that it had some gas and would last me from Takapuna to Albany return. (I actually checked to make sure it wasnt on reserve and I mis-read what end the arrow was on - note to self has eyes checked)

So this morning 200meters from where I was hit yesterday I ran out of gas

So down to the station had to buy a container ($21.99 + $10 for the bike) - missed 2 meetings for work.

Ive only run out once before when I was about 16 and put $2 in my mums old Alegro LOL.

Grub so understands this (running outta gas that is) ... so does Kendog ... I learnt from Kendog to always fill a loaners tank when you pick it up or you end up waiting on the motorway for assistance.

I ran out of gas yesterday in the tron to. I used my AA membership to get the AA man to bring me out some gas. Waited about 3/4 of an hour and i had to pay pump price for the gas. I was happy with that.

Serious question - lets assume that there is no charge for looking over the bike, and no damage done.

So Ive only lost a couple of hours and received a scare.

On what grounds could / would you ask for $$$ - I cant see any justification / reason to do so - its just one of those things.
