Hi All
So Im taking my restricted soon(ish) in just under two months and want to make sure im doing things right for the test.
I have two questions
1. When turning left the road code says to check your blindspot but i dont know which side. Apparently when turning right you look over your right shoulder.
2. Whats the correct procedure for a u - turn?
Any other helpful hints would be appreciated.

Makes sense to look right when turning right and left when turning left to make sure you not going to side swipe anything in your blind spot.
For the U-turn i was told to slow down and move to the left. Indicate right, check behind me (full head turn not just mirrors), check ahead. When safe, initiate the turn in one smooth motion (no feet of the pegs half way through)
You should be able to make a U-turn on 10m wide street or so. Go practice in a car park if you are not confident.
When I did, I found out I can turn left about 40% sharper then right. Sux being right handed in NZ.

When safe, initiate the turn in one smooth motion (no feet of the pegs half way through)To help with the U turn, move your weight to the opposite footpeg and shift your butt to the opposite side of the seat also (right U turn - move weight left) and then LOOK where you want to go. This allows you to use more angle of bike lean while carrying less speed. Sounds odd, but try it and you will see.

If you can afford $70 it is worthwhile getting onto Andrew at roadsafe and if he has time will spend an hour one on one with you(in Porirua). I found it took away most of my initial nerves and gave me confidence and skills which I then took through for my restricted and onto my full test also which made it money well spent. He will take you through just like a testing guy so you will know exactly what to expect.

Hey when you do go for your test, could you post about it or message me? I'll be doing mine soon too, might help to know a bit more about it or the route, pretty sure there's only one guy who does the bike tests. Thanks! Good Luck!

1. Do head checks
2. Make sure you indicate correctly, EVERY TIME. This includes indicating left when exiting a roundabout.
3. Ride to the the speed limit. Exceeding it more than something like 10km/h means a fail.
4. Slow down to 30km/h in construction areas.
5. Slow down to recommended speeds for taking curves. If it says 25, you do 25.
6. Check your mirrors often. They want to see you moving your head scanning for hazards.
7. Make sure you stop at stop signs; Put both feet down.
Basically ride like a pussy and you'll pass :2thumbsup

Hey chick, hels here (Colins mate...) I should be outta cast and back on the bike next weekend *touch wood*. Im happy to come out and show both you and Colin what to expect and how to do a u-turn etc if ya want? :D

Haven't seen a GP125 around Upper Hutt yet. They're nice bikes, my bucket is great fun and can't wait to race it. :2thumbsup
What is logical is usually the way to go.

Ditto as breakaway says.... watch out for those reduced speed limits at construction areas & indicate always (special attention to roundabouts).
- It's not a race so keep it slow & steady & don't loose your instructor.
- Get in some practice riding in the wet.
- Have some wet weather gear on hand just in case the weather shits itself on the day of the test.
- No stoppies, wheelies or donuts
Basically get in as much riding as you can so you are at 1 with your bike & most importantly .... relax & be seen.
oh.. watch out for those crazy old timers in cages (the ones doing 70 km/h in 1st gear on River Road).

Sweet as, we'll just pop over to Featherston and back. Then you'll be more than ready..... :D
Seriously though, we'll go somewhere quiet and practice. Its easy, nothing to worry about ;)

I did my restricted in UH and it was a walk in the park (maybe a ride) but the guy was easy pleased. Left AA and headed toward motorway, left into Mcleod and all the way through to whakatiki, left there and down to fergy drive where we negotiated the twin roundabouts and left into Ward st. He then got me to stop and gave me further directions. Right into Miro st where we did the U turn and then u turn again - follow Miro to Ararino, follow to the end and Left into Sutherland which becomes Alexander and an 80k zone. Followed this back to Ward and then directly back to AA via Fergy Dr.
Maybe a different route each time but if you practice that one it entails everything they want to see (Stopping / give way / roundabouts / 80 k zone / back roads / main roads etc) :shifty:
