Who has only one key for their Bike?

So often when you buy a Secondhand Bike you dont get a tool kit, user manual or the second Key!

and you keep saying one day I'll get a key cut (one day) and so you invest in a key ring thats huge and still lose the bugger? and eventually you go to Mister Mint and he shakes his mister mint head?

I reckon the bike shops do the one key routine so they can reposses your HP or get you to buy a new set of locks.

I must get another KEY.....

Its a real bummer when you loose your only key (only to find it in your pocket a couple of days later) Found out that my mates cage key worked, well its an older bike.

Yeah, I've only got one key. I've been meaning to get another key cut ever since I brought it, but 6 years later .... :stupid:

If you lose the key to your bike, get the number off the ignition barrel, make & model of bike and call the proper locksmiths. They should have a "code" book and be able to cut you one from scratch. Or remove the ignition barrel & take it in to a proper locksmith & they should be able to cut you a new one.

P.S.

I got both the tool kit (still with spark plug spacing tool intact :gob: ) AND the user manual when I took possession of my bike. :bleh:

Not just the one key thing, but just how easy it is to get a new key cut. When I bought the Cali 111 I was on my way somewhere, as in a loooooong ride, I stopped in Welly and had new keys cut. Hmmmmmm thinks me, no questions, no proof of ownership asked for. I could have been a bad boy getting a spare set for someone elses bike. Not me sir! ;)

What?

Learned that lesson a long time ago.
And not all bikes have the number stamped on the ignition barrel, either...

I must get another KEY..... :yes:First thing I do after purchasing a m/c is to get another cut. Well any vehicle really. I also attach a cloth ribbon, off discarded aussie bdu 48 practice bomb safety pins, to them. These can be labeled with a permanent marker to ID the keys.

I once lost the keys at work - Fortunately Sawyers were just up the road and I got them to hot wire the ignition then took the bike out to Chubbs Petone who took the ignition barrel off to find the key number. Checked up on the internet and cut me 2 new keys. Bloody good eh. ;)

This shows the advantages of going to a proper locksmith rather than wasting time with the amateurs at the key bars( Mr Minit etc.) I see the damage they do trying to mess around with watches, when the owners finally come to me to get the damage put right afterwards. Always deal with qualified people.

yes I have only one key for my bike, and no tool kit, and no owners manual, I have got a haynes workshop manula though, which is far more useful than the owners one would have been anyway.
I really must get another key cut eh!

I got two sets of keys with this bike, a small manual and a toolkit...
The toolkit is hard to get at so I never use it... I have managed to get the side cover off twice now.. as its so awkward to get off...

With any vehicle - car or bike - I always have two sets of keys...
If it only comes with one set, then I get a set cut, and then use the new cut key..... and put the master key away as it has the number on it.. and nothing is worse than either breaking or loosing that master key...

Even the bike lock and car "club" lock has two keys... and I have one of then put away as well...

All spare keys are kept together... :2thumbsup ..... it does pay to have a spare set of keys cos like the others have said above ^^^ you just never know when you will need that other set.

Fortunately, I have a spare key, AND the tag with the number. The newer Hondas have the "H.I.S.S." (Honda Ignition/Integrated Security System??), and the bike will NOT start unless an original key is inserted into the ignition. An exact duplicate cut by a locksmith will NOT work, as there is a microchip transponder in the key that is recognised by the ECU.

Dittio on the only being given one key with a bike. There were two with the GPZ, one for the ignition, and one for the helmet lock and seat compartment lock. I also have/had as part of the purchase a complette set of fairings, and a recycling bin full of parts, and the workshop book. Has saved me big $$ having the spares.

I always get a second set cut asap. One set for the bike as my normal bike key's and another set on my keyring so that if I lose the bike key's while out somewhere I can still get home.

Make sure that if you get a new key cut, you use the new keys, and store the originals. I give the original to my wife to put on her keyring (she never loses keys), I put one copy on my house/car keys, and only have one key on my bike key ring to avoid the big scratchy mark on the uppper triple clamp.

And a cute red flashing light on the dash, marked HISS. I need both keys handy for doing the panniers thing -- you can only remove a key from a pannier if it's locked. Tragic, but I thought I'd share...

donnow if this thread is old but I only got one key for my cbr600.
The guy I bought the bike off told me that the key has a chip inside and thus i cant "make another key" from a locksmith... only way is to go to Honda NZ and get a original new key from them....

anyone know if this is true for a 01/02 honda cbr 600?

That wiould have to be asking for trouble. I also put the key number on the ownership papers so a new key can be can be cut from code. :sunny:

Pretty much the safest thing to do and Murphys law states that once you have em you'll never need em...

Well having the two sets is handy. One set for running the bike, and they live in my jacket if the bike isn't running, and second set on my key ring. Need to move the bike, and there is a set in your jean's pocket saving having to track down the bike jacket.
