Actually I dont have a problem with Harleys or Harley riders .... but they seem to have a problem with me when I'm on my bike and i doubt that any of them will ever bother to come to a site like this.

Like I said ... just putting the cats amongst the pigeons.

I`ve met harley riders on the net that seem decent guys,on the road though it`s a different story, like B.M.W. riders they`ll totally blank you if you`re not on the same make as them, which personally I wouldn`t have as a present. In the U.K. at least they tend to be rich idiots who believe all the stuff they read in the papers and seem to think they`re buying into an image, they are i guess but amongst other bikers here that image is "yuppy dickhead"

I think to be worthy of your own forum on this page your bike should be capable of travelling more than 100km without mayor repairs or sudden oil loss. And I don't think Harley Davidson has made that step yet in its evolution - I actually question whether they ever will - or of their image's sake even intend to. Leave 'em where they are....

Now that we have an "Off-road" forum I was thinking of changing the name of the "Road bike" forum to Sport bikes and creating a cruiser forum. But after checking out <a href="http://www.cycleforums.com">Cycle forums</a> which has thousands of members, I decided against it. They have split their forums into sport bikes, cruisers, touring etc. and even with over 8,000 members the cruiser forum only has 200 threads compared with the 19472 threads in the sport bike forum. Even a quick check on the net doesn't even show many dedicated Harley forums.

Is there a direct correlation between riding Harleys and the ability to use computers

SPman
13th May 2003, 17:53
If you own a Harley you havent got Time for computers....too busy repairing, polishing and adding fringes!:p

Why do Harley riders wear fringes?

&nbsp;

&nbsp;

So they can tell they're moving!

Motu

I don't care, they ride bikes, and some are ok - BMW riders are up themselves and sports bike riders are a bunch of wankers, only us dual purpose riders know anything about real riding.

Don't fragment your forums into too many that don't get used.I ride dirt, but the dirt forum is not getting many posts,I'm happy it's there, just don't feel the need - yet.Just let the site grow by itself, people will come, look, join in,maybe not.Hands off, stand back and watch.

Here's some more Latin: De gustibus non est disputandum - There's no accounting for tastes. As far as I'm concerned HD riders are on the fringe (literally). For me, they don't represent what riding is all about. But hey,:whocares:

As long as they don't get in my way... (And yet, the only time I've been close to being involved in an accident with another bike, it was - you guessed it - a HD coming round a bend on the wrong side of the road...)

I still wave to them, as I do to BMWs. Once a beemer rider waved back. :gob:

There seems to be a lot of H-D bagging in this forum, I suppose (hope) it is in jest!!
I have had one Harley let-down about 8 years ago when my zillion-mile iron sporty burnt an exhaust valve, I had two other minor spots of bother (like when my Jap brand chain broke without warning) but thats it.
Of course I could always fire back that there are two types of riders, those that ride Harley-Davidsons and those that want to ride one!!
Anyway, I wave and talk to all on two wheels without exception.

23rd July 2003, 22:34
I don't see the need to segregate people. Any biker should be welcome.

As there is now a separate dirt bike forum I now don't bother to check, presuming there are no pertinent posts for me. I probably miss some good tips/advice.

As for all the slagging, there seems to be a lot of that lately and it isn't restricted to HD owners. As a Ducatisti I get my fair share . Must be the cold wet weather making people mean.:o

If we are going to be an effective voice then we need to stick trogether.

If there's enough demand for a special HD forum go for it. However it means that likely some KBers would never speak to each other as they would only ever post in their own corner of the site. At least we have the opportunity to say hi or not as it stands at the moment.

Big boys (and maybe girls?)are always going to have their pissing contests, justifying/defending their own choices and denigrating others. If you removed cruisers, sportsbikes, and off roaders people would probably rib scooter riders, or supermotard riders.

But Jackrat is right you know. The typical HD riders who think they are too good for the "other" bike riders aren't going to come here in the first place anyway.

If a good HD rider (and there are a FEW out there) wants to come and join in on the disscusion, we should try to be better and welcome them and not be wankers back to them just cause they ride a harly. If we did that, we'd be the same as the "typical Harly rider".

What I am trying to say is that let them be a part of the bigger group (Road bikes Forum) if they want.

but saying that at the same time maybe the new forum could be just what they need. To intermingel with only their own. That would probably encourage the HD owners to come and join the site.

By the way, what is a "typical" H-D rider?
I'm 50, second time married, ride a 1200 Sportster "S", me&the missus both wear tassled leather jackets, we wave/talk to anyone on two wheels, I also own a Suzuki XN85 that I am (slowly) restoring, - do I fit the "mould" of a typical H-D rider?

In my opinion, the typical H-D rider doesn't count other bikes on the road for shit. Specially sports bike riders. Went out with girl once and both her mum and dad are harly riders. I was shocked to find out what they thought of sports bike riders. Their exact words were- "Why would you want to be a Ninja turtle when you can get a real bike" (I ride a green ZXR-400).

The most anoying thing of all is when your riding in the middle of nowhere and you see a fellow human being and decide to wave as a sign of friendliness, who just happens to be on a harly. What happens next, nothing thats what. They just look straight ahead and pretend they didn't see you.

Its just like you said scumdog, it doesn't matter what you ride or how your appearance is, if someone is friendly and not stuck up, he/she is in my good books for sure.

P.S. Good Idiea about the Cruiser / Sport / Dirt Forums Spank. I think it'll work well.

I don't give a shit what you ride.
I'm not slagging the bike, just the rider.
There are some sad fuckers out there (and some in here) who think that what they ride defines them. That goes fer 50 year old dentists who think a V-Rod and five grands worth of accessories can buy them "attitude" and equally for R1 riders who think that 180hp equals a bigger penis...

matthewt
30th October 2003, 08:58
Couldn't agree more with you Oscar. I don't mind HD's I just don't like the snobbish attitude from most of the HD riders. Likewise buying an R1 doesn't mean you can ride like Rossi.

The school my daugther goes to did a big fundraiser. One of the main things was rides on the back of a HD. A couple of the HD riders pulled out at the last moment so I brought the MV along to make up numbers. Of the 4 HD riders only 1 would talk to me. The rest would hardly look at me.

Almost makes me want to wave hysterically at every harley I pass just to take the piss. Almost.

I wonder if it works the other way.

&nbsp;I can just imagine Mr Harleyman coming home to his [start/stereotype] headquarters after a hard (I mean slow) day of roaming the badlands. He pulls down his bandana and says to his mate busily cooking amphetamines. "Damn those plastic riders and their waving... What kind of attitude is that? Damn fags waving at me because they love my Harley so much.... Today the sun was in my eyes and I accidently waved back at one without thinking... felt so stupid...and queer." [end/stereotype]

Cant say I really care either way. I tend to wave at whatever:whocares:

Geez -- so much for the much lauded "brotherhood of bikers". The traffic on the thread asking a similar question about scooter riders seems to have a similar amount of venom attached. If it's got two wheels and a motor?? There, for the grace of God, we could all be Harley riders!! <shudder>

Coldkiwi

perhaps its just an ego thing no matter what we ride. I see cruisers that don't wave, harleys that don't wave, and I'm sure there's squids that don't wave... all because they think they're too damn cool/smooth/fast to acknowledge someone elses' friendship.
maybe those people buy into that when they get their V-ROD, R1, GSXR, BMW whatever and then feel obliged to be holier-than-thou forever after.

As for everyone else, no matter what they ride, hopefully the motorcycling glue is still working because it has no reason not too.

I say have a forum if it'll get used, not based on whether its PC or not. be practical about it, not biased. I don't see too many harley riders on here so maybe its not worth it because it mightn't get used.

After reading the comments in this thread I had to ask myself...how much of the Harley slagging is based on fact.

I know that Harley's have a shocking reputation for breaking down but is this actual reality, where are the statistics??
If it is true, then HD must have by far one of the best sales & marketing strategies in the world to be able to continue selling bikes at the price they are asking.
Here's a thought...how many Harley's have problems simpily because of there age? It seems that there are heaps more old Harley's than other types of old bikes (I could be wrong).

How often do people wave at Harley's, perhaps they don't wave back because they've got the same attitude as us sports bike riders...the "I'm not gonna wave first in case they don't wave back!!" attitude.

Personally, I prefer the look and ride of sports bikes and I don't normally wave at Harley's, but I'm going to make an effort and start. :soon:

Actualy Harleys are fairly new to New Zealand - they were only imported in small numbers starting in the early 70s,not much of a market for them,by the 80s they stated to become more popular. Our biker image was based on the British bikes, then the yuppy culture took hold and having the right toy became important. That's why some look down on Harleys...and sports bikes - they are fashion statment.

I come back to my previous threads - at the end of the day there is a bike for everyone. If everyone liked the same bike - motorcycling would be dead boring. Some like to cruise (Harley, Vmax, etc etc) some like to race (r1, gsxr, 954 etc), some like to tour (VFR, RF etc), some like them naked (Monster, CB), some like them semi faired (Fazer, VTR) some like the twins (TLR, TLS, VTR, Harley), some like American (Harley, Buell), some like British (Triumph et all) some like Jap (you know)........

In saying that - many of the bikes are starting to look the same anyway - esp out of japan. I must say - if I was only going to do m'way riding for big kays - a harley would be mighty appealling esp if I was taking a pillion.

IT does however seem that Sports Bike riders are more inclined to wave to Harley Riders with no response - than the other way around? (IMO) Why is that?

They are welcome to their own forum......but why segregate them any more than they are on the road??

BlueR1
8th January 2004, 14:52
In all fairness I have to say a fairly large proportion of the harley style bikes I see on the road up here do wave, although there are a few amonst them with attitudes that are too macho to wave to other mere mortals, but you get that with anything and everything not just morotcycling, in any area of sport or leisure there will always be a small minority that have an attitude that they are better than everyone else. My attitude is they are ridiing a bike so why not at least acknowledge the fact and if they dont wave back its them that has the problem.......... just my opion.
