then they realised what they had done and posted some whitewash cover story - never went back after that

Well!
Being a westie I really enjoy the drinking and beer tent.
Its a journey there and back. It will help to give you more experience as a rider.
Being able to carry all your gears on your bike and stay somewhere gives me the freedom feeling I always look for.
There are side events like helmet run(run across a paddock in only a helmet), hill climb(lots of crashes), burnout comp, weener grab(yea!), special events like trials bikes climbing a wall the hieght of a house.
Even if you decide not to participate you can sit back watching other people make dicks of themselves( and think thank god I'm not doing that)
There are always some characters milling around doing funny/silly things.
And you dont have far to go to your tent after a big evening of drinking.(or could ride)
There are bands
oh and a huge bonfire that makes your new years bonny at the beach look like a candle.
And then theres mud, toilets(ah hem), and cold but its character building!

Hey ladies...the "shewee" rocks, and the portaloos do smell funky after 2 days but it's nothing you can't survive if you just don't breathe :p
As for the cold...bring a hot water bottle, there is a huge boiler avalable at all time to fill it up with. A good quality air bed is also a very good call, as it will separate you from the ground, not to mention a good sleeping bag.
Get yourself a couple of good merino socks and a neck warmer, as well as gloves. The trick is to get yourself half singed by the bonfire and then rush to your tent and cuddle up to your other half for some "warmth sharing"...
Honnestly, I'm from the Tropics right? and have been going to the 5 last Cold Kiwi and survived, so I have no doubt you can do it no sweat and will be hooked from then on.
Really, once you get past the whole mental block of "it's cold and muddy" (and most years, it ain't that cold and muddy anyway), the whole event from the ride, to the pissup, to the entertainment, without mentionning the catch up with a lot of fantastic people, makes it an event I look forward to every year.

How about something like this: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1458478
I don't know if she's still got it, and not sure if the fitting requirements would work for your bike, but it's definitely the way to go.
I've got a little "bumbag" equivalent that I bungee to the pillion seat and it's amazing how much I can cram in there.
Hubby's got the 45 litres Ventura Pack, so he bungees the tent to that and has a net over the whole thing to keep it secure.
At any rates, there is a huge array of reasonnably inexpensive storing systems out there nowadays, so good luck. Or, if you know anybody going up with a car, you might put your gear in with them?

Its much easier to let someone else take a tent, erect it and then say "any room in there"
Sleeping bag is all that is needed.
I'm sure some one will be cool with that ay 007:innocent:

Surely their is someone from KB'r that can help you get there. That why ppl who ride bikes are different to ppl who drive cars. We are different and support each other.
Someone would probably go out of their way to help you out and not expect any thanks for doing it.
Ive done trips to the Sth Island and stayed with ppl I have only met thru KB'r . However they are Sth Islanders and they are different than Norf islanders. Which is why the Sth Island is so popular for bike trips.

The smell is surviveable - no question there - it's the sight that got me - chilli con carne floating in beer, with arse-wipe paper arranged delicately on the top. And the proximity of the fetid pile of steaming brown - honestly, if I'd sat on the seat, my butt cheeks would have come out sticky ....
......... A good quality air bed is also a very good call
Good call!! And remember to blow it up before you get pissed .... otherwise you're likely to get pissed again in the morning from the fumes!! :wari:
...... "it's cold and muddy"
Cold contracts the pores and gives a rosy glow. Mud is great for the complexion. All we need then is the antioxidant properties of a decent pinot noir and some dark chocolate - SWEET! :Punk:

Good call!! And remember to blow it up before you get pissed .... otherwise you're likely to get pissed again in the morning from the fumes!! :wari:
Or make sure not to drink while you're putting the tent up, only after...Hubby made the mistake of convincing me to drink some Jamiesons while we were erecting our shelter, on an empty stomach, and yes, the tent was up after about an hour and a half or so, but I was also in it, feeling like the earth had suddenly decided to play Merry Go Round, and :drinknsin not altogether was I the right colour either...
Cold contracts the pores and gives a rosy glow. Mud is great for the complexion. All we need then is the antioxidant properties of a decent pinot noir and some dark chocolate - SWEET! :Punk:
Now, you're talking sense woman!

That's part of the beauty of these events: you get to be like a bloke for a couple of days. No need for makeup, hair dos or suchlike cos no one cares what you look like in the morning. The likelyhood is, they'll look worse than you will :D
It is VERY relaxing!

A tent, sleeping Mats, Sleeping bags rated to at least -10, wet weather gear, toilet paper.
Optional stuff, a camp stove, tea/coffee, baked beans etc, bearing in mind you can get food etc at the site or in town.
Booze? According to the site liqour license, you're meant to buy all your booze on site, but I'd doubt they'd search everyones bags.

We normally pitch our gear in or near the clump of trees at the fork in the track as you come in - in 06 we camped amongst them, 07 we camped opposite them on the right-hand side. Phantom, Bonez, Goblin, Sels1, Triboy would all know exactly where I mean.
Most likely will be somewhere near that area again - just look out for a battered-looking black 'n' white dual-sport with a gold wolf on the front cowl above the headlamp and a KB sticker on the front fender.

Finally, a Cold Kiwi, actual frost on everything. Was beginning to think they'd have to change the name to "Mild Kiwi" or "Quite-nice-for-this-time-of-year-actually Kiwi".
Great to catch up with those I'd met before and meet a few others - such as the 007s, Gunnyrob and doc.
Had a fantastic ride down through Mangakino and the Western Access, had a brilliant fail riding the track into the site when I decided to cut across the grass and up a hill, throttled off and stalled the bike half way up. Kept sliding backwards when I tried to get the bike into neutral (fucking neutral "safety" switches!) and "Shiny side up" had to stop and rescue my bike.
But the old XT ran superbly there and back and we had two great riding days with a great social event sandwiched in between.

What a fantastic weekend away with my girls.
Lyd did an awesome job riding all the way down and back with less than 2 hrs open road riding and all of that at night. One proud dad I am.
Heading home on Sunday the number of other bikers that gave her the thumbs up as they passed us really made her day and mine.
She had a couple of oops one taking off from a service station letting the clutch out too fast and down she went and the other almost home just too exhausted going around a 25kph corner and down she went, not hurt only her pride and a busted indicator. Couldn't wake her today so left her to sleep. One gutsy girl that one:2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup:2thumbsup

Well, as usual, the Kiwi was the event I look forward to every year, and once again, it didn't disappoint...
Awesome ride going down on Friday arvo, even with the "pea soup" on desert Rd around 7 in the evening. Nothing like having to follow the white line at 60 kms an hour for lack of visibility to make you feel really alive...especially with trucks passing you at full pelt :pinch:
Loved meeting up with Wolf, Sunnysideup, Bonez, Edb, Jafar, Lula and Adrian, and a bunch of old bikers who've been attending the Kiwi for ever and were our neighbours...cracking up laughing around a bonfire is what keeps me sane!
I was a little disappointed though that none of you tough bikers responded to the tug of war challenge issued directly to the Kiwi Biker crew by the organisers :(
Well done to Carver and Sidewinder for producing one of the best pisstakes example I have seen in ages...Seeing the majority of the crowd cringing in unison was bloddy funny!
The ride back to Orkland on Sunday wass nothing short of a delight, with blue skies galore and the lightest of traffic on a beatiful road...I came back feeling refreshed and happy!:woohoo:
