I've had a gutsfull of dial up here at home.
I'm only 15 mins from town and our rural exchange wont allow broadband or something, same old shit whenever I ask......
Anyway, we've tried to get wireless and a couple of places say it wont work or be very dodgy for us due to the big forest of pines behind our house disrupting the signal blah blah blah......
Some dude came out with a meter on the roof and tested all kinds of shit.
There must be something we can do, what are some of you rural folk doing or using, which companies?
Someone told me the other day that if we have SKY, which we do, there is a place that takes the signal off the SKY satelite that should make broadband workable.
I forgot the name of the firm, but think he said it was based in Taupo? Seems weird.....
Any ideas, solutions?
Cheers.

Get buy-in from the appropriate people and then band together and use directional antennas to build a line-of-sight wireless relay into town.
It's been done before by rural communities in various parts of the world. Can be a great solution. Investigate it with someone who knows their shit, you might be surprised at what can be done.

My parents use Packing Shed wireless, since their phone lines are to poor even for dialup. Works well, don't know the cost.

Orcon wireless. They use the Kordia network. AFAIK if you're not in a coverage area they'll do satellite but cos of the high install you wanna maybe look at Farmside.co.nz ...cheaper install but less data per month. Iconz sometimes do special deals. Probably worth phoning them all up and haggling :-)

Never thought of that.
Where would I get one?
Can I plug it into your house?

Looked at Farmside, they were the lot that came and did tests on our roof.
Had a google, but takes forever here to load those kind of pages, might look more at work tommorrow on BB.

Some communities in NZ have worked with the local school to get wireless.

Just rung Orcon via their rural Bb thingy.
They did a check via satellite or whatever they do, said we can't get wireless and the only option is satellite @ about $2500 just to set up, plus the monthly bill.
Googling also shows similar satellite prices from other firms too.
if you want to simply wach free porn link up your sky dish to your tv tuner card on ur comp and download the decoder program you get all movie and pay channels for free!! aswell as playboy and spice

I'm only 15 mins from Hastings on the main race track for bikers, you'd think...how fuckin hard is it to get broadband!
Every bastard I've rung in the last day or so has said we can't get it, tests dont work and satellite is the only option at about 2500k.
Gonna ring the outfit that installed the neighbour's dish who are in a straight line about 400 metres away on another hill and see if they can hook or get a feed off them or something, fucked if I know.

Would be good to watch youtube stuff at home without a 3 day wait for a 1 minute clip.
You post prompted me to ring the outfit we ahd out to see if we can explore other options, so the chick looked up their records and it said the signal is completely blocked by trees, so they're gonna send some techo out to see if there is anywhere else we can get a signal.
She said it will cost...........I said, life costs, what's new.......

yeah some petrol for a chainsaw for some tress not to block any more?
Wot Cajun said, chainsaw will solve the problem!
I live rural here too and our phone line is a radio phone, connected to a tower about 1km from farm. Apparently not suitable for data transfer.
The gubmint here in Oz helps pay for a sattelite connection.... waiting for the jokers to arrive and set up now!
Good luck!

The trees are'nt mine.
They are just over the fenceline on a farmer's land and about 50 acres of pines.
Might be a bit of a mission sneaking and cutting them.

If you have LOS to your neighbours place, and can come to an arrangement with them you should be able to setup wireless between your place and his and share the satellite for less than 2500.

Tbh I really don't understand what some have said, some of the techo stuff.
More of a case of never being into it.
Just turn pooter on and use.
Oh, and I do appreciate what you've all said, taking it in, but some over my head.
Hey I'm a mechanic, not a pooter guy.

Asked their provider about that this arvo, they went on and on and made me sleepy with what they were saying about not knowing who is using what amount of pooter space(?) and it being diffulcult to charge corectly blah blah blah...........

Yeah Telecom are good at that, they tryed to tell me I could'nt get BB but I friggin' knew I could coz the the neighbour one house further up the line had it.
It's no where near the speed you'd get in town but it's so much faster than dial-up it's not even funny!

If your neighbors are approachable to the idea I 'could' just be matter of sharing their data usage... perhaps. & you pay the setup costs on the link from his house to yours

Yeah the B/B leavs a lot to be desired here but least i can open pages with a single bound !
All i need now is another gig of processor and i might not put the fist through another monitor lol (no not that stupid, i throw it)

See if your local farm supply store has worked out a deal for its customers. I have just started working for a guy who can not get broadband as he lives rurally. I dont know if he paid to get set up, but he pays $100 a month to a local farm supply store for his satellite broadband. Have to say though it was a bit slow compared to what we get here in town, but better than dial up by a long way.

Tbh I really don't understand what some have said, some of the techo stuff.ok brace yourself, heres the technical description.
We put a repeater on a nearby hilltop where everyone can see it, and then link from the repeater into town to someones wired broadband. Each house has a little antenna pointing at the repeater. All the houses share the initial install cost of the repeater.
See! No rocket science. Initial costs are about 4-5k for the repeater, and about 4 hundy per house ish, plus a negotiable golden handshake for the prick who installs it for ya (digging all the post holes for the antennas is a good negotiating tool.) Ongoing costs are just the broadband connection in town. Then there is the question of who knows how to maintain it - its pretty basic gear. A team of 4 blokes can install the repeater and 3-4 houses in a day. ish.
All plus/minus heaps, etc, ad nauseum. YMMV. Wonders never cease etc, now where did that crescent spanner go ?

Just an update.
Just been pondering on all this, Farmside are meant to be coming back to see if they can find a spot to mount something somewhere to make it work, but not heard....
Anyway, since I'm going into hospital shortly for a week and then a fairly lengthy lay up I thought I'd get a laptop to take to hospital and when I'm parked here as I wont be able to sit at the pooter desk.
Enquired about the mobile broadband thingy that Telecom are promoting now for a laptop.
No probs the sheila said, plug the stick thingy in the lap top and away you go as long as you have 027 mobile covergae in the area.
Yep, we do.
You can take it out and put it in your home pooter too and you have BB on that too........
Ehhhhh? Just put the stick in the PC and its that simple.
Yep she said.
I just have, it is......just like that, broadband.
Well fuck me..........solved.
Been fucking about for months.......;)
Does'nt quite seem as fast as town, but I aint complaining!

If there isn't someone in your area offering wireless internet, then you can install your own equipment easily enough. Its not particularly cheap, but a quite a few households can share a single broadband connection.

But I dont play games, download music or anything like that, its just net and email things I do.
End of the day I'm rapt, dont really care what it costs tbh.

You are quite close to town - just call telescum and tell them you want ADSL please and make it quick kthx. Quite likely you will get ADSL if you are closeish to town.
Failing all that, if you can see another house that does have ADSL, then you can link to it with a pair of antennas and radios and share their ADSL.
