Kiwibikers Drag Night
5pm Friday 4th Feb 2005
Champion Dragway, Meremere
After some recent discussion (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=7487), a lot of people have shown interest in a Kiwibiker visit to the Friday Night Drags at Meremere. This is open to bikes and riders of all levels (and cars) and is a pretty casual affair. Either line up against your mates or the next person in line. On a typical night you will get in 10-15 runs.
Riders will need a full bike licence (not sure about learners on 250's?).
Valid WOF/Rego (not sure about race bikes?).
You will need to bring the usual riding gear as well (helmet, gloves, leathers etc).
Gates open 5pm. Racing from 5:30pm-til late (i.e. 2am)
Spectator fee: $10
Racer Entry fee: additional $15
All this is off the top of my head so if anyone else knows better speak up!
For more info see:

Are you gunna run race slicks, street/sports or off road tires for this event?

I'm thinking I might run my off road tyres and lower the pressure a bit - the fairings on these 600cc sports bikes don't offer much grip I've found....

They let learners in, I did it on the KR150 with my learners licence, and i got to race against a car for one run, my best was a 15.3 @ 132kph, that includes a 0.7 reaction time. I'll be there to watch for sure!
TS, it's at the scrutineers discretion but general rule is it has to have a warrant and rego.

However embarrasing it is, I'm not very good at the moment when up against bikes. My clutch control on the beast is not as good as it should be. And since I can't? go up against tricked out boy racer cars, I may not come all the way up :argh:

Maybe we can start a new class Kiwiwalkers wars. Me feet still work, reckon i'm good for a busa bashing 8 sec, have just brought some new shoes too, will scrub em in before the drags. It's a traction thing.

I'd be useless. I am completely hopeless a quick starts of the mark... I can still beat cars away from the lights normally, but I am certainly never at risk of popping the front wheel up (not that I would be anyway). I'm too chickenshit to get the revs up and just drop the clutch, it's always a slow release for me :)

They usta let you run on a learners ect(i've only had my full a year or so....)on full size bikes
A few guys have brought racers down, but they only ever let you run 'till dark and sometimes make you run on your own(as a comp vehicle)
And they'll let you run against the cars in practice and in the grudge rounds(but be prepared to get your butt kicked!)

You'd be really surprised SC, there are alot of seriously quick cars at most drag meets like night wars, the import scene is getting much larger at the strip in NZ and there are alot of 10sec cars out there not to mention 9's and even dare i say 8 sec cars now.
As Death will back up it is hard to find good traction on a bike from all the rubber left from cars off the mark, if you dont get ya bike off the mark well enough most modded 4WD will whoop you off the mark, it's unbelivable how farkin quik they are.
I'll be doing my best to get there, mainly to watch Death stand up wheelie the whole strip while proberly still running a 12. :not:

Dude, looking at the results for the last few night wars meets, the quickest thing there was Lance Lowe on a ZX10R doing 10.7's. The next quickest is a couple of cars at 11.5s. I dont think the real quick guys do the night speed stuff. (Check the results if you want). www.dragwars.co.nz

My cages that I used to drag on street tyres had the pressures dropped 8-10 psi for sidewall flex and traction on launch... wouldnt know on bikes tho... people I knew that ran bikes ran drag tyres....
a big contact patch is nice but you dont want anything weird (wobbles, too much heat) at speed
or wheelies
All depends on your launch technique....
slip the clutch.....

Yep everyone the Drag nite is this Friday!!! All the bikes normally park up next to the grandstand by the start line (because they can).
I wouldn't worry about tweaking anything until you have a few runs under your belt. Just ride what you know first off and go from there. Its very casual so no need to stress about the finer points as it will probably take you 5-10 runs to get your technique sorted anyway.
For first timers it pays to get there early as then you will have the track to yourself and can get in a bit of practice before the crowds roll up.

Ok,r we gonna meet at the a/b or just make our own way down?
What sort of meet is it,a points meet or just a casual meet?
The only real advice I can give is lower pressure helps 10-15psi,and a short burnout helps heaps.Launch on the last orange.
If it's a points meet you can run DYO if you want,or just run heads up in the bike class.
Dyo is better for any slower vehicles,it means you are only racing your own times.....
Heads up is simple first over the line wins.....

Talk to Arven, he dragged his old Gixxer750 at Meremere a few times. I think he started with some scary sideways action due to the strip having far less traction than the street but sussed it out eventually with some decent times in the 11???sec bracket.
Best time for a run at Meremere is after a V8 meet when the track has been preped properly.....or so Iv heard anyway.
Good luck!

2 Questions:
If say we come down to watch you guys and gals race.
Are we allowed to bring our bikes out into the back pit area where all the pit crew park their vehicles etc.. you know where they store their tools etc.... Not right on the pit lane.... out where the grass area is. Gees I do hope you know what I mean....lol.
So that our bikes wont be in the car park....
And then all our bikes can be parked all together in a group..... and maybe also a lot safer.
The the next question is: Would it cost us more other than the cost to go in?
PS what is the cost again....?

Yeah I guess we'll just have to see how the weather looks on Friday morning and make the call. Rain was forecast for yesterday and today also but its been relatively dry so its probably a little premature to cancel based purely on the weather report.
I know this isn't ideal for the out of towners and others that need to go out of their way so they'd probably be better off considering it postponed unless they are willing to take the risk. Chances are even if tomorrow does go ahead that there will still be a lot of interest in another visit to the next event on Fri 18th Feb so those affected can aim for that.

At work, its was raining real bad for about an 30 min or so. Been told its to get worse - and looking outside south auckland is getting hit by more dark cloud then here. Also its a Northerly so what ever rain we get here is lighter than whats there.
If the track isnt dry we cant race, or can we? Or does it just depend on rain?
Why dont we have our own KB drag day
Anyhows get back to us people if you find any better news.

West Ak has just had a fine drizzle... but the black clouds are overhead.. and the temp has dropped a notch or two.... so the rain must be a coming.

At 3.45 it is wet in Pukekohe - just been to car crash in Tuakau caused by wet, slippery roads. Please be careful out there everyone. Been as far as Mangatawhiri this afternoon and it was spitting a bit out that way as well.

According to the hotline, nightspeed is "still on" at this stage.
Will check one more time when the gates open (around 5) and post here.

Well it stayed dry until about 9-ish when it started to shower lightly so they stopped the racing to wait for it to clear but I had enough by then anyway and went home.
About 15 bikes there (a couple busas and a zx12r doing high 10's - low 11's). I got in 7 runs on the ZXR400, all between 12.94-13.08s@165.81-167.00kph so pretty consistent. All my R/T's were under .627 (except for 2 red lights:)) so nice to know I still got it after a couple years away from the strip. Was looking forward to sending some cage drivers home in the C6 DIY comp later but will have to wait for the 18th Feb now.
Nice to see RIB, sAsLex, k14, big dave and Quasi there too!

Seems you had fun out there, wish I could have gone.... Yea I know I might have been smoked but it would have been nice to see how quik my bike really is I've never really been able to test it like that. Also could have seen how fast I'm willing to push it.
