...do you get on/off your bike and why?
YT & I both get on from the stand side, always done it that way - just seems 'logical' but we were wondering why we did this. Habit? Safer? Other?

I get off the stand side mostly. The reason being is that the bike is at rest on that side and not in danger of being overbalanced and falling while getting on. It sounds dumb but it's happened often enough (people dropping their bikes) to know that it could happen. When I cannot get on the side of the bike (which is lower too) it's usually because of access issues.

Decals got here!! Woohoo!! :niceone:

Yes.
Probably.

I sometimes get on the other side (like if there's not room), but it feels awkward.

When I did my BHS, we were told to approach from the side with the stand (left in my case), reach across and grab the front brake and get on from that side.

Always stand side on my past sports bikes, although the M109R is low enough to slide on from either side easily enough.... even from behind.

Sidestand side usually - it keeps you further away from any hot exhausts.

Either, I'm not fussy and have long legs... Predominantly LHS though.
I'd rather have a Thunderbird 2 "chute" that slides me down onto the bike from above.
TB1 is much cooler though...

Stand side as it's a more natural movement. Never though about this but since you asked and I have nothing better to do...(as usual:crazy:)

Stop, tap and push side stand down with left leg, lean the bike to the left side so that the stand touches down, right leg braced for whatever reason if the bike tips that way and step off. This all occurs in one motion pulling the bike slightly so that it is firmly secured by the stand.

Be hard to do the same as you would have to get off towards the right and push towards the left if you got off the other side.

There - that's the most obvious answer. Do I get a prize? Come on.... I need something to get me over using the lousy train....:sweatdrop

Well, given that you usually get off the bike to the left, it would become a habit anyway, mounting/dismounting on the left side.

Started off with pushbikes which had a side stand on the left - get off and push the stand down with one motion with your right leg......

grr... wht the fack are we/am I talking about this anyway.....

Stand side as right handed and legged and easier to swing the right leg over. May find that lefties prefer the other side. And does it really matter as long as you get your leg over often??????

Left or right would be a better option,as there are bikes with right hand side stands (I've owned 3) or just a centre stand(4 of those) or none (most of my dirt bikes and at least a couple of road bikes).I always get on or off the right hand side, this is most likely because I'm left handed.

But it was also the business side of British bikes where I started my riding experience. The right hand side of the bike was called the ''timing side'',because that's where the timing cover was located - cam gears or chain, magneto or dist drive. On single carb bikes the carb adjusting screws were on the right as well.Kickstarter, gear lever, gearbox oil level, oil tank and drain, for single or siamese piped bikes the exhaust was also on the right.Clutch and points on the left, but later model bikes had the points on the right.80% of the work you did on a British bike was on the right hand side.

Also for starting a big single I stand on the right to kick start - right hand on the throttle and brake.Just makes more sense to be on the right hand side for me.

Side stand, the bike leans towards ya which makes it easier, even for a lanky git like moi. Plus we drive on the left so getting off next to the pavements seems sensible.

banditrider
21st July 2008, 19:21
LHS and funnily enough it doesn't matter which stand the bike is on. I'll walk around the bike to get on it...

I wonder if it's actually 'cause of the way I was taught to ride a pushie (and probably a lot of others as well), you know, stick ya left foot on the pedal, push off with your right foot and then swing right leg over bike...just a theory...

If i have a choice it is the stand side - just cos it leans and is easier to get me leg over .. otherwise if I have parked myself into a shit of the place I will get on the other side :)

I'm startin to feel lonely... I get on my bike from the opposite side to the stand. But I have a good reason... my bike is nice n low and I have more lift ability in my Left leg to get it over - especially when the saddle bags are attached!

Me too. Opposite side for no apparent reason other than I'm 6ft 4 so no worries getting over and left footed- so right is normally still foot when kicking footy!

I did this thing once where I tried to vault on from the back. It taught me three things....

1) I am not a young man anymore.

2) Those saturday afternoon cowboy movies are all shit!

3) The tank is an immovable object and my gonads aren't!

Oh and my neighbour is a bastard and laughed his toupee off.

I was thinking about this the other day, seems someone bet me to it!

I get on from the left because of the stand and its lower that side. I was taught in BHS to get on from that side and hold the front brake. I find it EXTREMELY difficult to get on from the right - very unnatural! :o:eek:

But then I'm uncoordinated at the best of times!!!

BUT...but...you still have to get your foot right across the high side of the seat??

From the 'non-stand' right-hand side you've already got your foot over staright away - and should for some reason the bike get knocked/fall over it will fall away from you if you're on the 'uphill' side.

90% of the time I get on from the non-stand side.

Prefer getting on from the stand side as from the other side it is possible to put weight on the bike forcing the sidestand into the surface. At least from the stand side you can support the weight easier as you are closer & it is easier to lift than pull down.

Haven't gone into too much study of the mechanics of getting onto a bike but the seat stays the same hight regardless of which side you get on, doesn't it????

So how is getting on from the stand side easier?

I found (when I had a broken rib) that it was earier on the 'up-hill side', leg up onto seat, slide it straight across and onto the ground, the highest part of the seat was nearest to me, ergo once I got my foot above that the rest was easy.

From the other side you still have the sam ehight to lift your foot - but that hight is further away and more awkward to get my foot past.

I guess if your seat does not have a wide flat top this won't be an issue.

You are correct - there is a high side regardless which side you get on. I just prefer to get on from the left - feels more natural - just as it would seem for you to get on the right hand side. Each to their own eh??

Doesn't appear to be a right or wrong way - just preference!

Always the left (stand) side if I have a choice, easier to throw my right leg up and over then my left!

By the way the only time (so far) that my KTMs bars have touched the ground is when for some strange reason I got off on the right. Got tangled up some how and the bike followed me over!
