Oh I've answered this one before - one of my favourite subjects in fact.

May 2006 - Decided "I want to ride a motorbike coz I'm sick of rising fuel prices and Auckland traffic jams."

Looked at cost of motorcylcle purchase....then looked at cost of loan to cover cost of motorcycle purchase plus gear...looked at bank account  looked at weekly expenditure for cigarettes...looked at loan repayments again....same amount! Bought Allen Carr book, quit smoking, bought bike, sat tests got learner licence and away I went!

Told myself if I ever started smoking again I would sell the bike. Love the bike too much never smoked since nor even had a craving that I remember.

My theory is that you have to give up (at least) twice. You have to find out how easy it is to fall off the wagon and that "just one" means just thousands more.

I gave up in November 1989 when my 1st daughter was born, didnt want to smoke around my new baby. That lasted six years, I was playing touch and indoor cricket and we used to play pool and have a few drinks afterwards, I was asked to hold a smoke while a mate palyed a shot. I had a puff and that was enough for me to buy a packet the next day. Smoking 'CAN' cause cancer, dosen't always. I met a lady the other day, she is her 80's and has been smoking since she was 17. My grandfather smoked all his life, he lived till about 86....yes I still smoke, we dont smoke in the house or in the car.

I've smoked a grand total of three cigarettes. I don't see the appeal, just seems such a dumb habbit to take up.

Cigars taste nice, but I'm not too keen on mouth cancer either.

The excuses of these smokers sounds like a helmet thread on an American forum - sure it's dangerous, but there is no proof that it can kill you,I've been riding without a helmet for 30 years etc etc etc.

Never smoked and never even thought about doing so - and I grew up in the era when everyone smoked, everyone.

Smoked a pack of 25 a day for 17 years, Loved every minute of it.

Gave up a couple of year ago, No idea about specifics, Didn't take note of the date,Couldn't justify the cost, which some weeks was near $100.

Found it pretty easy, Decided not to smoke, stuck by that decision. Just ride out the cravings and they mellow away to fuck all. Still get them, easily ignored.

Luckily I managed to not become the typical nazi ex-smoker, Fuckers imo get on a high horse because they can't handle not smoking, They should just smoke and STFU, no one needs that shit.

Smoked a few ciggies at parties over the years... just to get the nicotine buzz and the dizziness. When I started smoking too often the effect started to wear out and since they didn't do anything else for me besides impacting negatively on my fitness it wasn't hard to just stop.

Since then I have probably smoked no more than 2 or 3 "proper" cigarettes and can't see why I would ever want to.

I gave up just the once...........9th Feb 2000 & still goin strong :Punk:

I used a sneaky mind trick to give up, its based on "cognitive dissonance", the theory that the subconscious mind cannot hold two conflicting thoughts. So for 6 months or so I told myself "im a non smoker & I feel great", that was my mantra. Said that to myself every time I thought about smoking or was actually smoking, kept at it until it finally "clicked", was on a flight from Perth to Melbourne, 10 mins in I looked up at the seat in front of me & said "today is the day", just felt right, landed in Melbourne & threw the packet in the bin, never touched one since nor even remotely wanted to. Nearly blew some property deals over it as I was rather "testy" in the first few days lol, but a few patches on the arms sorted that out :niceone:

So the people I most wanted to piss off (not Mum and Dad either funnily enough) Were the people that least gave a shit, and would struggle to remember my name!

Same as any smoker, I am always awaiting the tomorrow that never comes to actually stop.

Getting scary now as my little girl (nearly 2, was going to quit when she was born ($5000.00 wasted)) sees me go outside, and wants to come and have what daddies having.

Similar...

January 2000 BMW came with new model Paris Dakar.....
Saw it ,...drooled over it......did the maths, easiest way i could afford it without taking from the family budget was with my smoking money.
As a sailor I indulged in very few pleasures while stuck in a tin can for lengthy periods......so I smoked 3 50gram pouches of tobacco a week in the end..... Smoked for about 25 years or so....

First time I gave up....
Never touched a cigaret since....
Saved myself a fortune, never got that BMW though.....
Still refer to the Aprilia as my "ashtray"....cheaper and more fun

Never understood that,if you dont want to do it then dont, simple.Sex is addictive but many wouldnt shag a fat chick if there life depended on it.

All dependaNT on the amount of alcohol previously consumed and what shes offerring. Some bigger chicks shag really bloody well, although to be honest Ive never gone to bed with a fat and/or ugly woman, but Ive woken up with a few...

As for smoking, would still love one now although Ive done the cold turkey twice now. I think these days I can have one or a few and then not have any for a week or a month. Also tried pot when I got back to the naki but they make it far too strong and I was too fuct to do anything. I wish I could get my mitts on a big bag of cabbage. Also don't think alot about the pre-made/tailor made smokes with all the extra chemicals put into them. Last smoke I had was about 3 weeks ago, then I got busy and forgot them. I left them somewhere where they got some mold into them I think and if anyone wants to be put off smoking they are welcome to try one as they are effing revolting!!!

I grew up in a house with a layer of smoke through it as my folks drank smoked and bet themselves poor.

I'd hate to think what damage all that smoke did to my lungs and that of my siblings. My grandmother died recently from lung cancer and struggled for many years with lung problems.... her lungs destroyed by decades of smoking also likely to have casued her emphacema (sp?) and two strokes. I miss her, she was such a lovely lady.

I tried smoking a bit during heavy binge drinking 4 nights a week when in the military many years ago.... gave up after that phase in life. I must say the urge is still there occasionally.

Yeah, Id be pouring down some more alcohol to get rid of the thumping headache and she would want to start a conversation. If she started talking about coming back or anything else that caused concern then telling her that I could not remember her name and asking her to remind me tended to get the result I wanted. I.E, the never coming back again :2thumbsup Although if she was not a whale, easy on the eyes, a really good sort or just a top shag then just calling her babe until I found out her name thru the conversation worked, well most of the time...

Interesting ... so you expect me to start again????

I gave up five years after being told "when your diaphram stops working you need good lung capacity to cope" (this was the neuro re the ms) .. I had told him to fick off. After a few years I preped myself and choose to quit. The next week my mothers husband died ... all my family smoke .. I stayed quite all through that time. that showed me that if I could hand that I could handle anything!

I smoke the occasional fine cigar - one or two per year.

I would hazard a guess that I'm more likely to die from inhaling vehicle emissions over the course of my life or being taken out by some inattentive road user than from the cigars.

I'm worse - the 'holier than thou fucker' that never smoked...

I was that guy up until a few years back, when I tried a cigar and realised that it was really quite nice.

So now I have one occasionally, and have also been known to indulge in a nicotine buzz off a cigarette (I prefer hand-rolled ones, preferably with menthol-flavoured tobacco) when drinking.

I plan on purchasing a pipe in due course, too, and sampling some more interesting tobaccos. Nothing better than a Friday evening out at the smoker's table at Galbraiths with a pint of bitter, surrounded by a cloud of fragrant yuppie-repelling fumes.

Beats me how anyone could get addicted to the stuff, though. I smoke tobacco, on average, probably once a week. I can no more imagine puffing away on tobacco throughout a working day than I could imagine chugging down a bottle of scotch on my lunchbreak. People must have to work really hard on forming an actual habit out of that shit.

All things in moderation.

No excuse, get told all the time to give up, usually by my children, they keep telling me they don't want me to die. I kinda think of it as a weakness, that I haven't given up, but I am cutting down.

Went into a service station a week or so ago to get a packet, and the lady behind the counter told me its a dirty habit, and I should take up alcohol instead, but we decided that was just as expensive, so she told me to take up sex as its free!!! Okay - I had a few teething problems with the Ducati due to previous owner neglect.

Electrics shorted out (at night on the open road!) located the short in the headlight and re wired it - has been fine ever since.

Oil leak due to a previous owner snapping the chain and it punched a hole in the engine casing. They fixed it with bog. I got a professional to fix it with aluminium.

Speedo cable and rev counter cables both snapped due to rust (due to water built up in them)

Apart from that she has been good to me. Replaced the tyres and chain and brake pads and belts - all the usual stuff - not too pricey from Haldanes.

I wouldn't tell anyone to stop smoking - MSTRS I don't remember preaching at you to stop smoking in your own house did I? If I did I apologise.

Maha - sorry about the oil leak. It doesnae leak anymore!

AND...if the worst comes to the worst you could always sell the oil-leaking, sparking red mess and get some $$ back.....BUT ya don't see too much demand for 10 years worth of dog-ends and worn out Bic-Flics do ya??

I could probably count on one hand how many cigarettes i have had in my life. Doesnt interest me, just makes me feel ill. I am ashamed to admit that both my teenagers smoke. My son says "well what example have i had" as my partner smokes.
I have never nagged at my partner to quit(of course i would prefer it) as i just dont understand the addicitive side to it. He has to do it for himself, no one else. He started to smoke around 13 years old and is now 39.
As for my kids, i am saddened, with the campaining around now, there is no excuse to start. I do not support them in purchasing cigarettes at all, and its a smoke free home, outside even in winter.

Lots of (some say) bad habits
I smoke, i drink, have experimented with drugs, then experimented with them some more as the designs changed, got married,
then gave it up as it was bad for me !

The married part that is, it was the only thing i didn't enjoy ! Sure won't arrive at the grave in pristine condition

I gave up 3yrs ago after my brother in Laws funeral, I had smoked so much that week I gave myself tonsilitus.. That was the 5th or 6th time I had given up and I finally learnt the "1 smoke is 1 smoke too many" rule.
So yeah 3yrs. I think I may have finally kicked it this time. Previous to this time the longest I had lasted without smoking was 1yr.

LMFAO!!! You're as bad as Pussy, a discussion on XYZ topic, no one telling ANYONE what they can or can't do, just what they (and the rest of the sane world) know to be a fact & here you are getting all bent out of shape lol..........why? No one is pointing a finger at you personally, its your choice to smoke, you are old enough to make up your own mind if you want to poison your body. No one is telling you that you MUST give up. I personally couldn't give too hoots if you get sick from smoking, I don't know you & probably never will, knock ya self out sunshine :p

I see you haven't met his mother either!
If you did, you'd prolly take up smoking..it is a better alternative than homicide...

I noticed over the years that the occupants of the cells at work seem to be in a ratio of at least 19 smokers to every 1 non-smoker?

Any theories.??

Smokers are low life law breakers!

Seriously though for a moment...

I smoke, I know it is bad for me, am not ready to give it away yet. Have had a couple of attempts to quit but have failed to do so, using Grubs theory the next time I do will be the last time I do.

I've smoked a grand total of three cigarettes. I don't see the appeal, just seems such a dumb habbit to take up.

Cigars taste nice, but I'm not too keen on mouth cancer either.

Like you I can count the number of ciggies I've smoked on one hand in the last 49 years (and none were smoked more than 20% down). If I add in cigars I still wouldn't run out of fingers. I've never understood the attraction.

I remember my first when I was about 13. Made me feel dizzy and sick to the stomach.
My parents used to smoke 2 packs a day. I figure if I'd smoked that many I'd have burn't more than half a million of those little cancer sticks. How much is that in dollars?

Can't contribute to the poll there is no 'I dabble' in smoking option or 'I am a mood smoker' ....not just bad moods either.,..seem to do most of my smoking talking shit with girlfriends...it's just the done thing

That is I smoke now and then, sometimes heavily and sometime just occasionally, big gaps in between 'dabbling' some of years and still I enjoy the odd ciggie Yes I shouldn't do it and yes it is stupid but well I just do it when I want and now that I have reconciled that in my mind I tend to smoke a lot less

Kinda like when you are on a diet and feel the need to eat everything in sight.

I used enjoy smoking. I liked the taste, I liked the nicotine hit, I liked the little ceremony of rolling smokes. I smoked a 50gm per fortnight, maybe more. I could get through a 15gm and a 20 pack on a big friday/saturday night.

I tried giving up a few times. And relapsed 1 less time. I havn't had a cigarette in 4.5 years and don't plan to start again.

The method that worked for me was cold turkey combined with not going anywhere near the places that I associated with smokes. I basically gave up drinking. Untill a few months ago I hadn't gone to the bar at work since giving up. I didn't go to the smoking area at work and didn't hang around smoking people at all. I haven't physically touched a cigarette since.

That's good advice Trouser.
My experience is kinda the same but different:
Because I hate smoking and it makes me feel ill, I never got into the habit of going to pubs, clubs and bars so I don't drink much either.

Dang I pushed I never smoked

I used to smoke when I was in a popular band about 7 years ago. Gave me a nice throaty voice.

Unfortunately the 2nd guitarist became an alchly, the bassist started doing coke, and the drummer got into debt and had to get rid of the drum kit. And I gave up smoking.

For you guys that recognise the fact that you want to give up that's the start.
I smoked from the age of 17 till I was 52. Average of 20 per day. You do the maths on that one. Ciggies were a Half crown (25cents) a pack when I first started to experiment with tobacco.
I knew I could give it up HELL I had done so a dozen times.
Did the gum. Did the patches. Did the hypnotherapy X2. did the cold turkey.
Had a thousand reasons not to give up.
Finally I finished up in the A and E at 2 in the morning unable to breath.
I thought that I was a gonner. No shit! scared the fuck out of me.
Turns out I had developed C.O.P.D. google it be easier that me trying to explain what it is.
Drove home and chucked ciggies and lighter out the window on the way and never touched them since.
2 1/2 years smoke free and feeling good about it. lungs are fucked but I'm determined not to add to the problem and start again.
I'm not one to preach to smoker about the evils of the weed because I know how hard it is to kick it.
If you are doing it and trying to give up MORE POWER TO YOU!!
Saddest part of this whole thing is that my son started smoking with my cigarettes. That for me is the the thing that pisses me off the most. Not that he nicked my ciggies but that I put the temptation in his way and he took it up.
I hope and pray that he will see the light a lot sooner than his stupid old man and gives it up before he to makes himself sick.

cheers, i have no idea how much a pack costs.
if I'd started smoking at the age my father did and smoked as many as he (up to 40 a day), that'd be $203,000 to date if I had managed to live through the cancer of it all.

That's a really nice garage full of motorbikes there and I might even include a Hog amongst them (CR1000)

Never understood that,if you dont want to do it then dont, simple.Sex is addictive but many wouldnt shag a fat chick if there life depended on it.

Shag a fat chick? I would and did, years ago of course but hey, a shag is a shag, turn one down and you never get that chance again!

Beauty is simply an equation of time over availability!

Before I was married (Oh so long ago now) it was my ambition to shag every woman in the world! (so much to do, so little time!)

A brilliant fledgling career nipped in the bud by marriage! (alas I would make the same choice again though, damn it.)

Cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol were so cheap at sea (all duty free) in the Merchant Navy and women were scarce on cargo ships, (not passenger ships though) I turned my attention to tobacco and booze, with disastrous results.

In keeping with the thread topic, one day I just decided to stop smoking and did, another day I decided to just stop drinking and almost did, that has been a much longer process but I am almost there.

Footnote: One good thing about long term marriage is that you get to shag a chick of every different size and shape imaginable and they are "all" fantastic.

Well that is in my experience anyway. :wari: You did ask. John.

I smoked from 72 to 80, gave it up for good. Got a chest cough I couldn't shake and that was it. I hardly even smoke pot these days for the same reason, just can't handle the smoke in my chest.
