Hi all, just bought my first bike at the start of the week, a 2008 Kawasaki KLX250R, and loving every minute of it. Once question that keeps puzzling me, is the break-in as important with a modern bike as it was with bikes pre-85? (my father keeps stressing the point).

Welcome to KB. In answer to your question yes & no. The bike not so much but you yes.
The bike engine should not be plugged, ie low revs & straining up a hill or slope to start with. Don't rev the guts out either. A run-in period will not hurt the bike.
But most importantly you need to get familiar with your machine, how it handles etc. Become one with the bike so you know what to expect. That will take several months practice around town & out on the open road especially where there are nice bends. For some riders they never learn.
Travel & learn from other experienced riders.
If your old man or his mates have had previous riding experience, take note. They are still alive so they didn't do everything wrong!
Cheers & safe riding.

G'day, is it road registered?
As said before, don't thrash it but don't load it, should be good to go...
