I've just bought my first bike, like so many on here it would seem a Honda GL 145, I've struggled to find any specs on these at all. Does anyone have any info? Thanks heaps, now all I have to do is rereg it...

Sell it for an outrageous profit to a Bucket Racer and go buy something that you can find specs on.

That's a serious comment too.

I've got a GL145. What do you want to know?
There is SFA on the web about them because they're an unloved orphan that was sold in one english speaking country.

It would probably be too expensive to sell as a bucket racer! I bought it for 1k, info I'd be interested in would be to do with power output etc. more or less anything at all...

IIRC 16hp, not sure about torque. I'm just over 100kg in bike gear, it's good for 120km/h (eventually). I've seen some bullshit figures on trademe for fuel consumption, mine is about 3.5l/100km, based on motorway travelling 75% of the time.

Loncin make a copy of the GL engine, these figures are from that:
# Power : 11 Kw @ 9500RPM
# Torque: 10.2 Nm @ 8000RPM

Thanks, it rides great, I'm just preparing it for rereging, is there any tricky parts I should look out for, or is it going to be similar to WOF requirements?

Also is there anywhere I should go/avoid, was thinking of going to VTNZ...but am open to advice!

So far all that has needed fixing is the brake light switch (front), replacing all the bulbs in the instrumentation, adjusting the idle speed. Not too bad for a bike that has been off the road for 10 years.

Still need to fix a dicky hi/lo beam switch

No, there's nothing special to look for. It doesn't need a brake declaration which is a bonus. Looks nice, good luck.

Keep an eye on the oil level and change it often. It doesn't have a filter, only a screen.

Having come from the cage/two stroke scooter world, is often 2000ish kms, or more often?

bungbung

I've been doing about 2,500 to 3,000km between changes.

Hi/lo beam switch ended out being a circlip that had rotated 90 degrees, love the fixes that are free!

It's in for rereging today...hopefully will be ready to ride this weekend!

Attached is a brochure that I found online at econohonda (zoom in so you can read the text) :)

Sweet, now I'm road legal! (only took 4 1/2 weeks at VTNZ...) Out of interest, can you get tyres for 18" rims that are a little 'fatter'? At the moment the 2.75 x 18s seem a bit small in the wet

MSTRS

It's not the size that is important. Teehee.
Tread pattern will determine how well water is repelled and therefore how well your tyre/s grip in the wet.
Perhaps you can get Bridgestone BT45s to fit. These are awesome tyres for smaller bikes.

Willdat?
9th September 2008, 12:59
so with 2.75 x 18 originals I should go for 80/90 or 90/90 profile tyres?

The speedo seems hopelessly optimistic, will I run into any problems going bigger?

MSTRS

I have no idea about that. I do know that BT45s are great tyres and this page would suggest there is an 18in to suit your bike... http://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products/battlax/bt45.html

We got 8 people on one of these at a rally years ago. Probably not the sort of info you were looking for.

Cycletreads (http://www.cycletreads.co.nz/content/catalogueViewEntry.aspx?profilePK=all&entryPK=1577) have 90/90-18 BT45s in stock. 80/90 is the proper metric conversion of a 2.75 apparently, but 90/90 isn't too far out I suppose. I'm sure somebody closer to you has a correct-sized BT45, they're a common, cheap, long-lasting great tyre with tonnes of grip.

Got photos?

Long time ago so any photos are long lost. We had six on the bike and one balanced on each side on the pillion and rider pegs. Alcohol was involved.

Aaaah this brings back memories of my first bike, also a GL145. Definitely keep an eye on the oil level as mine would eat it like it was going out of fashion (used to ride Levin to Taradale, would use a tank of gas and pretty much all the oil in the motor per trip).

Those BT45s look like they need a lot wider a rim than what I have (1.6 inch front and rear) would that be an issue?

It's not going to be an issue. I've got a 2.75 rear on my GL, it's fine.

Anyone know what the correct qty of fork oil is for these- I think someone overfilled mine last time they were done and it just failed the warrant cause of a leaky seal.

He, I attempt tp buy a GL 145, but with a 200cc engine by "Loncin".
It will be my first bike and i will only drive it until july next year, because I'm going to live overseas...

Do you think I have to get a certificate or something for it, because the enginesize has changed a lot, e.g. new breaks or something like that?

Here's (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=184221232) the bike.

loncin are a chinese manufacturer making cheaper versions of honda motors. whether it will last until july is anyone's guess!

no you wont need new cert for the brakes etc, though there may be some paperwork to be done the mounts were probably all the same (being a copy of a honda engine) so it was either signed off or will be easy to do

click here, (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=79473) and skip to the end of, the uni club's current "i'm looking for a 250" thread - quite a few good finds on there recently

Hey guys,
I finally bought the GL145 with the 200cc engine by lincon and she's sooo good:eek:....
She's amazing. The bike is very talky and is faster than I thought she would be...
Well now it's time to get my learner licence:rolleyes:...
I will post again after i've been riding it for a couple of months and tell you if the chinese engine has broken or not.:msn-wink:

No, but my father, who's been rinding half of his lifetime, sais for 200cc it's very good...!

But I might get some experience with other bikes soon, to compare.

And of course the guy who sold it said it's a great engine, and he also said it AFTER I bought it.

well good luck then! hopefully it's as reliable as the original honda motor. do remember to post up either way before (or after) you sell the bike

Be interesting to know how the brakes cope with the extra go! All 144 cc of standard power seems more than enough for the brakes anyway!

Hi guys. Just jumping in here a bit late cause my boy has been doing one of these beasties up recently (and doing a fine job I might mention), and now would like to adjust the tappets. Anyone have any idea what the gaps would be on this model of donk (or anything similar really)? Any advice or pointers to possible info would be appreciated. Cheers.

it's essentially the same motor as an XR or XL so that might be a good starting point....

GL145 is hard as to find parts and manuals for as they were only released in a couple of asian countries and NZ. a bit of a strange model. Nice quick motors though!

I surely do own one but I don't have a manual. The fella that sorts out all my problems is Kevin down at KG motorcycles in Christchurch. He's pretty onto it when it comes to small engines and making them go faster!
