I just got back from riding and by looking at it now, you wouldn't have a suspected a storm like that coming.
Not a cloud, you can see all the stars. The roads are dry, it's actually quite warm. Oh well.. was a brilliant past couple of days which I spent at work..

the far North is without power now
It looks like it will be down to us some time during the night! Bloody typical, cant come during daylight hours, that would be too easy.
Preparations here are nothing more than what we already have in place. A gas heater, candles and lanterns, we have gas on so cooking/hot drinks are no problem. We have food.

Coromandel is taking a hiding. A lot of small branches laying in the garden, but nothing big yet as we're partially sheltered from the current wind direction. The harbour is white all over. Apart from a leak in one of our window frames, the only casualty is a big Morris and James pot on our deck which got blown over. I wouldn't have believed it possible!

Warkworth, it is just an ordinary, shitty, winters day here at the moment. We have wind and rain, it is a bit cold, but the barometer is dropping quite fast. If the forecast pressures are correct then it will be one hell of a storm.
I have to go out in a moment to post a letter, will check in on my elderly neighbours on my way back and make sure they are all ready. Last winter during that big storm we had they had no way of heating food or water, i used to go make them pots of tea...LOL
I am actually more worried about my Mother in Thames, she is on her own and is not well. She relies on power for heating and her life link alarm. Will ring her in a moment to see how she is faring.

True that.
The wind has died down and the birds started chirping for a while, power was off for 3 hours, but all good now.
We have had worse.

Just talked to family in Te Aroha
mum & dad are in town had no power since about 3.30pm already a few trees down & no power but they had thermos fill & had a hot meal for lunch instead of dinner
bro is about 6 ks away in country on his farm, two trees already uprooted in the tanker driveway .. one deep rooted totara & macrocarpa ripped out by the roots , just been out & braced his garage doors as they threatened to blow in, the cottage across the road that they rent out has had their power lines down & then a milk tanker came along & hooked them & completely ripped them out, & they had no power since about 5.30pm
so they are having a pretty rough time, at least he only has a dozen odd cows that have calved at present .. & will prob be without power for the next day or two, but as long as they all stay safe thats the only thing that matters ...
Been a crappy day here but it appears to be over for us. Still rainy and windy but no menace left. We have been really lucky here. Just got a text from a friend who lives about 12 kms away, power back on. Rather be over warned than under prepared for sure. Good luck further south this storm has a real sting in its tail!

Storm, what storm?
Have had no power outages at all today, just a bit of wind and rain. Have been listening in on the scanner, the fireys been run off their feet from Jo Public having their roof lift or tree threatening or fallen on their house. Heard 1 tree had got 2 houses in Titirangi. Bet they will be glad to sit down and enjoy a hot cuppa at the end of it.
As for around upper Albany, only a bit of crap on the roads blown off the trees but nothing else to intdicate a huge storm.

The wind is likely to return to the Auckland area later tonight, but from the south-west as the centre of the low heads towards East Cape. We've been fairly sheltered from the Easterlies so far in central Auckland.

Was there a storm? Rode from east Auckland to the Shore and back, didn't notice anything much
Bit of light rain and a few wind gusts. Lots of tree debris on the road, and some local flooding. Only "oo'eer" moment was (ridiculously enough) going down Symonds St over the motorway overbridge, and a gust of wind started propelling me inexorably into the kerb, lean and countersteer as ever I might. Answer to that one was more gauntlet. That straightened it up.
However , I see the barometer has dropped clean off the bottom of the scale, never seen that happen before, so maybe it's still on its way.

Storm in a teacup eh?
Brother inlaw lost his electricity last night in Titirangi.
Bit of flooding up North.
Nothing particularly bad out East.
Storm - hardly.
Just more paranoia and bleak observations.

Yeah, the whole of Titirangi lots it's power last night due to a transformer which blew up directly outside my house, big noise. Lots of sparks. Very cool to see.
But other then the mass power outages this storm has been severely dissapointing in Titirangi..
Bit of rain, wee bit of wind, lots of debris over the road, but nothing I haven't seen before and there's definately been worse. Over hyped!

Phurrball
29th July 2008, 14:43
^^ After 18 hours without power down the road from Nagash in Laingholm, I have purchased a gas cooker.
(It's just about a given that our power goes out in this type of weather - though 18 hours is a record for my 4 years out 'there')
Hooray for candles, and laptops with enough battery life to watch a DVD :2thumbsup:
As for bangs - was it the transformers? It took 3 attempts to get the power back on in the 'Holm - first two resulted in >1minute's power and then an explosive 'BANG' somewhere in the neighbourhood, and then no more power...
Bring on the next one - warm food we shall have!:headbang:

The main flooding was over the other side of the Ahuroa Hill, I was turning off just before the railway crossing (you know where that is aye?) but I still had to go through three lots of flooding. One I even stoped cos I couldn't tell how the road went. Could only see about a 6 inch ridge of road in the middle, so I watched four other cars drive through and away I went.

not bikin weather
Well I am a bit surprised tonight by the really stormy weather we are experiencing. We got off really lightly over the weekend during the weather bomb, even though the pressures got seriously low here, we did not get the really bad weather. It was not wonderful, but not as bad as right now...
At the moment we have the worst stormy weather we have had in this whole episode, apparently the front is off us now...LOL
At least it is not cold, and our candles (scented) are already lit :blip:

sure copped it today .. Been awake since about 2am however from about 7 it got real rough, had to call the fire dept on the way back from my horses this morn due to trees & power lines on fire .. that was quite spectacular, Lost power just after 7am & work finally let us go home about 11.30am. we lost part of our roof (along with quite a few other buildings in town)
the whole of town was closed apart from dick smith, & power has finally been restored at 8.30pm ..
parts of the area look like a tornado has been through it so clean up will be more than a few days by the looks
been fairly settled for the last two hours but must have been in the eye cause she is cutting up rough again so dunno how long the power situation will be on for

The rain has caused slips about 400m from my house. At least one house terribly damaged - 12 homes evacuated at the moment. Stuff quotes:
A large slip caused the evacuation of more than a dozen homes on Auckland's North Shore.
One Torbay home has been severely damaged and is danger of collapse. If it slips down the hill it will take another three houses with it, and slam into a further 11 homes.
The rain is still coming down here - those poor, poor people with their homes in such trouble. I often see kids playing in the front of these homes - they are family homes. I sincerely hope that the misery ends with the homes already damaged. I down want to look down there in the morning and see a huge bloody landslip filled with peoples homes and possessions.
They must have been moved quickly - several of the homes still have cars in the driveways - so Im guessing that they were made to get out "Now!!!"

We lost power at 7am last Wednesday (July 30) and didn't get it restored until 7pm Monday (August 4)! It came on for five minutes on Sunday but then the transformer outside our neighbour's exploded and burst into flames... The storm was really bad all day Wednesday and we lost about 10 trees that were just ripped out of the ground. Luckily we have an orchard down the road and then the neighbour's house and hedge so we got a little bit of shelter. The house was undamaged but our garden looks like a bomb hit it.
The whole house is covered in mud and pine needles and the worst part was, we'd just had our concrete path dug up the day before so there was mud everywhere!
We'd had a garden design woman here a few weeks earlier and thankfully the majority of the trees that we lost were ones we were about to pay someone to remove anyway. But there is a hell of a lot of green waste to clean up.
I'd just bought Andy a combo pole saw and hedge trimmer for his birthday a week earlier so he's out there now sawing to his heart's content!
We'll have a cheap power bill next month but considering we had to go out and buy a generator, it's not going to be much of a saving.
Photos don't really show it that well, but you can get an idea from this one of what was on its way down in the storm. Luckily we are on a ridge so it all fell well away from the house and garage. These three or four trees on the right were about 30-40 foot tall and they were torn out by the roots.
