Does anyone know of a reason why I can't replace my fuel pump with a cage one?
Because I can't really think of one appart from mounting.
Also does anyone know what sort of pressure I need and what would be too much?

Because basicly I can get a new cage pump for cheaper than i can get a second hand bike one!

What sort of pump is it,what size?A car one would be bigger and draw more amps,you can get small inline pressure regulators and if you already have a pump you should be able to find the specs for it,if not 2 to 3 psi.

we've run car pumps on sidecars and found we have to run a pressure regulator or they supply to much fuel

At a guess a bike one(unless it's injected) would only be about 1/2-1psi as thats what we used to set our regulators at

Unless they are the same specs I wouldn't risk it. Like Motu says, current draw is important. Bikes charging systems are finely tuned and if it draws too much current it could mess with your electrics i.e. flat batteries, intermittent performance under high drain/long trips etc.

Also wrong pressure could mess with your carb jetting...

The pump is manufactured by mitsubishi which is where i got the idea of replacing it with a cage one, but from what you've told me that might have to go into the too hard basket.
Anyway have found a few on e-bay and one on trade-me but the one on trade-me has done 70,000 kms and mine ownly made it to 75,000. And the prick wanted $150!!
The ones on e-bay are much more reasonably priced $20 us for a 2k1 model! (starting bid anyway)

i think you will find that the volume of fuel and the distance it has to pump it will be alot different on a mitsi cage that your go like fuck two wheel chick pulling godsend. ie a car has to pump it about 1.5 metres you don't, you have a nice bike worthy of a new fuel pump.

ChrisHave you pulled it apart? It's usually the contacts in the back that burn out. You could try filing them.

I DONT THINK YOU CAN DO IT ON YOUR BIKE YOU MIGHT FIND THE CDI SENDS A PULSE TO A SOLID STATE RELAY THAT PULSES THE PUMP ACCORDING TO RPM. I WENT THRU THIS ON A ZX9 AND THE RELAY I USED WAS OFF A ZXR250 SO CHANCES ARE YOURS IS THE SAME.
I MIGHT BE WRONG BUT THATS MY EXPERIENCE

I did take the old pump appart and file the points but it only lasted a couple of weeks as points to far worn.
I have bought a a/m cage pump from repco for $100 it is alomost exactly the same size and shape so was no problem mounting and only runs 2-3 psi with magnetic cut of (?)
I rode the Coro loop on sunday which was about 8 hrs riding, and she's goin mint as, no flooding, starving, battery flattening.
And I've kept everything standard so i can slot in a oem pump if I need to/ in the future.
So I'm f$kn rapped :2thumbsup

The Honda's have the same problem. I replaced my fuel pump which also had worn contacts with a Repco replacement as recommended by my God-like mechanic at Dowman Honda in Wanganui & not had a problem with it since. And no contacts to wear out in the replacement either. :)

I haven't got the part number to hand, but could check it out tonight & post tomorrow.

Sorry only jsut caught this but yeah
Greg @ spectrum said Yammys are very prone to it (so sound slike all bikes pretty much!) and said they just slap car ones/repco jobs on customers bikes as its a far cheaper option and hasnt given them any issues... i trust him.

Last option chris is we could have just had the bike rn gravity feed - looks like it would have worked with the only problem being when the bike got like to the last 1/5 of a tank it prolly wouldnt fall any more, heh.

No problem.

Can't do it now though as the little speccies sheet i got with it currently resides under my pillion seat which is at my Aunty's were my bike lives.

(I don't have a garage, my lounge is too small and I live in West Auckland therefore bike does not stay here.)
