Trying to get rid of it before the new laws come in.
I would happily take it - it's a nice-looking bike. Just not that that price.
Still, horses for courses - a bike is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

That is expensive, but id still rather spend $7500 on that than $7500 on a brand new hyosung

jesus - i've owned a 3ma and it wasn't all that. nice when it ran right - they are notorious for seizing and had that PITA 18" rear wheel.
i'd be all over a new ninja if i was limited to a 250.
that yamaha isn't worth $3k.
EVERYTHING will be buggered, perished, or unavailable.
they just weren't made to still be on the road 20 years later.
..

My 1985 Yammie RZ250 is goin great guns.... for an old 2-stroke... but you could hardly expect $7k for it!! (I'll take it if anyone feels inclined to buy it off me!!)
I would be surprised if anyone bought it at that price, you can't even call it a collectors item! Well, not yet anyway! Do they honestly expect someone to even look at it for that price?? Just a cursory look on TradeMe shows a whole lotta better bikes for cheaper!!!

3ma - mmmmmm
but not at that price - unless it's had a total rebuild!
although - it's only $5,500 aus....

so now he thinks hes a dealer in all things rare and two stroke.Last time i was in there he had an RZ 500 at for sale, which was admittedly pretty tidy.
Truth is the reverse cyl TZR250 was a mistake by Yamaha which prompted the importer at the time,Moller Yamaha,to release a kit which was meant to stop the things from seizing and also make them go fast enough to beat the then king of the hill,Suzuki's RGV 250.They failed on both counts, and the Suzuki won all the races that counted.
Yamaha got it right with the V Twin model that came after it though, now theres a bike.......

Tempting to ask "If it's going up in value - why are you selling it?"
A) Well if he imported it from Japan and paid NZ$1500 for it then it's gone up in value (for him).
B) Perhaps he confuses 'value' with 'price'

I don't blame you. Back in the day I test rode a couple of two-strokes to see if I was interested in one. One of them was this TZR. I can confirm that the NSR250 I rode impressed me a whole lot more than the TZR I rode on the same day. In fact, I was quite surprised by the TZR's comparative lack of power.
I wouldn't buy one to ride at any price. And if I was buying for an investment I'd be looking to pay less than $3500 privately. Being a dealer, maybe it would be reasonable for him to ask 5k in my opinion.

There are a lot of overpriced bikes on trademe and from people who have been into dealerships who think they're going to be able to charge the same.
I was following 11 or so auctions before I found my bike, only 1 actually sold. A lot get relisted over and over.
Also seems you get a MUCH better deal if you buy outside of Auckland. I finally got mine from a dude in Hamilton, and the further south you go the better the prices.

I remember well when these things came out. A whole bunch of us 250 proddy guys waited till bloody close to nats start for em to arrive.
The problem we had was we all got the low powered Jap market model TZR rather than the "rest of the world" bikes.
Yamahe dealerships then were busy trying to get the HP out of the new bikes for us.
You'd get the HP then the bike would seize -so you'd back things off a bit. and they'd be slower than the old TZR's
BUT that said the seizing up was ONLY after we tried in vain to get full HP out of them --in the factory Jap (slow) spec they were pretty reliable.

Meh it could go for that figure.
I had a mitsi sapporo for a few years, fantastic car - but i could not believe the value it was worth as a collectors item.
Here i was, poor student with a mint condition one sitting in the shed.
In the end i swapped it for cool ZXR. But while in Japan i got to go to a 'classic' car dealer.
Over there your all fancy if you have the original Fiat 500 or a Austin Healey. You keep you orginal showroom condition 1960's Mazda Cosmo in the shed - as its worth too much money to drive.
Likewise buying a Triumph 650 Bonnie in Kyoto was like winning instant kiwi. But owning a RG500 was like winning lotto.

Because they are a bike shop, not a museum <_<
Possible that is will go up in value, who knows? Its "apparently" got 13k on it from new so not only are they harder to find but its got super low mileage. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't pay that for it, the bike means nothing to me but it might to someone who collects bikes.

I think he is the guy who had a RG500 for $15k - repainted in non standard olours, oddball fairing, no service history (vital on these, especially gearboxes), etc. Not mint enough nor modified enough to be interesting. There was a tidy original one in Otago for $10k, which is (top) market value. Asking about twice it's worth - it is a limited market for big 2 strokes that cost more than a V8 to run.

Oh my god, I had an 82 sapporo in the early 90's. Are they really collectible? Mine was a fully loaded minter import with the 2.6 motor and 5 speed, even had the vox box that gave spoken warnings. They did look the part didn't they?
I know a few of the bikes that have passed through my hands would now be worth a bit though ie my old walter wolf.

I regret selling my pepsi rgv. That was a quick little bike and hoist the front wheel off the pipe in second with a tug on the bars.
If your going to buy a 250 2 stroke it has to be an rgv or kwaka kr1

guess hes trying to see what he can get away with.thing is most ppl with $65000 to spend can afford to go on teh web and import one of their own.even the spark plugs for those things are nearly $100 each, whoever bought it would probably be scared to ride it,and as for getting it insured for when it falls over and scratches the titanium screen....

Yep +1 for that. I was into drag racing 2T back in the day and none of those reverse cylinder Yammies ever made it to the start line. Tuning for more power = seized motor. The older motor was better.

i have a TDR 250 with the 1KT motor in it.bog standard and ridden hard,it has 54000km on it,now on first oversize due to a stripped oil pump drive gear(!)10,000km ago.its a reliable and powerful unit.the Reverse cylinder engine had a lot of problems mainly in the carburation. It was a classic case of rushing an unproven design to market back in those heady days of all the 2T makers trying to out do each other.sometimes less is more:yes:
