I am tossing up idea of making my own gear indicator, why cause i can, and something different.

unsure if i head down the number route or use leds to show 1-6 gears

aka the two styles

<img src='http://www.bluegauges.com/gpi_stuff/6.jpg'>

Or another long term opinion is actually building it in the dash

<img src='http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g137/Madd-Dogg13/Day-5thgear.jpg'>

have seen a number one in the dash also underneth the tacho area

surely you must be off the dialup by now or on something else. Nothing worse than h.l. a s.n.t.n.e

edit: I'd be more worried why I need a gadget to tell me what gear I'm in

Be curious to know how you'll do it. Switches sensing the gear change? ... or a micro working out your speed/revs ratio to calculate the gear.

suzuki a certian ohm, tells you what gear you are in, aka when you put a 2800ohm resistor in tells you in 5th gear sorta thing(TRE)

found a couple of schematic for suzuki based ones, so give it a go

yeah, not to hard to start off with, i got a few things i want to do my way.

and then long term wiring in to the dash be interesting if i go down that route be complex

Of the two I think the digit one might be the more practical but a bit hard to say. You should have fun anyway :niceone:

Which ever way you do it it might pay to make sure it's not too bright or adjustable brightness???. I find the fuel LED on mine really annoying riding at night cause it's so bright.

Agree with dhunt - brightness is def a consideration - the ST has a dimmer on its instrumentation, and so does my RADAR display - when things get dark, bright LEDS etc really suck your periphial vision.

Great idea tho Cajun, - the # of times I try for another gear cos its pulling so easily.....

I prefer the line of lights - the digit display looks a bit cheap IMO

Good luck

Prob with line of LEDs is that unless you can see which ones aren't turned on, its pretty hard to see which one is lit... esp when ambient light is dim/dark.

Always contemplated putting in a gear indicator in, any chance you could let me know where you got that schematic.

Uh.

Tell that to the MotoGP and Formula 1 guys?

Personally, I wouldn't mind just having an indicator LED that came on in first and top gear.

95% of time i do, normally when sorta being lazy crusing i forget, and being a 600 handy known what gear in if need to pass, and its just something different, no idea if i even like riding with one or not.

Jaycar has a number of kits for rev indication, gear indication etc. It might be a good starting point for you. Most of them come with a light sensitive resistor that will dim the leds for you come darkness.

I'm building a gear change indicator from one of their kits at the moment. It's good fun!

I never knew how good they were till I got a girlz bike. :devil2:

Once you've had one you will never go back:drool:

i'd be lost without mine; i've been toying with teh idea of getting a TRE but they all void the gear indicator; something i cant do without now.

i reckon numbers too..! alternatively just buy a girls bike

You should have got one of these...

Got one on my SV. It just plugs in and away you go.

my k7 has a gear indicator integrated within the dash, call me stoopid but voiding that for a TRE and then adding another unit to show gears is a bit naff.... maybe im being retarded but i dont like the idea . I need someone to create a TRE for my bike that doesnt negate my indicator.

but churr anyhows

What kit are you refering to that would do the gear indication.
The GIPRO product is only good for bikes with EFI, which mine isnt.
For me I would be happy with a 1st gear / 6th gear indication.
No thinking about it.... I'd really want to know I was in 2nd so if the need arises I know I have to give the bike more revs to reduce the chance of rear wheel locking.

So a digital 1,2,3,4,5,6 would be my wish.
Anyone have any other links.

Shouldn't that be easy to do? Put the necessary resistor in one of the wires running back from the gear indicator to the ECU. That's if Suzuki has made it - gear position sensor to gear indicator to ECU. Or do they go - gear position sensor to ECU to gear indicator?

I'd go with a number as to me it seems easier to process in a hurry.

A number is a single symbol. A series of dots needs to be counted, that takes too long. Even if you have them in different colours you need to learn what gear (number) each colour represents.

Whereas you've been learning to recognize numbers since you were a baby.

my 2c.

Why the hell do you need a gear indicator anyway? Should you be able to hear the engine?

Do you know how a TRE works? All it does is trick your bike into thinking that it is in top gear when in fact it may be only in 2nd. It does this by changing the resistance coming from the gear position sensor.

yup.. but i forgot to go to school and electronicamagic isn't something i play with. I leave that to the darkies !

I could find you one, if I wasn't supposed to be working madly so I can go on vacation. The last one I read a review of was a 'smart' one that learned what gear the bike was in from the revs and speed it was doing - so it needed only an input from the speedo and tachometer, both of which are electronic on your bike, aren't they?

EDIT: Pharkit - it was easy enough to find:
Acumen (http://www.riderstation.com/DG8.php)
Datatool (http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/Datatool_DiGi_Digital_Gear_Indicator--56-DIGI-1.html)

I'm pretty sure I saw a kit on the wall last time I was at Jaycar. I'll get the product # number for you next time I'm there.

I sold a Starlane gear indicator not too long ago if you're looking for a ready made device.

If you spotted one at Jaycar, would be interested in the kit you were thinking of

That starlane one looks the bizo, but my mechanical speedo model isnt listed :(

EDIT: Pharkit - it was easy enough to find:
Yes last one looks interesting
- Taco electronic, but mechanical speedo on '90

renegade master - yes and lights

It comes with a hall sensor that I assume is used to get the speed from the wheel. It'll dim at night as well.

I called into Jaycar today and.... KC5344 Gear Indicator Kit ~ $90 is a discontinued kit.
Man said their computer recons there are 8 in Wellington and is going to see if he can get one transferred up here :)
