We're keen to try a motorbike night ride at the sandpit, we already ride Wednesday nights at the MTB park at Woodhill and have sorted cheap, effective lights... We've found that you only need 20watts of power to see really well in the forest cause it's so totally dark. Our standard set up uses a Halogen 20w, 36 degree 12v 'daylight' bulb mounted into a plastic pipe joiner, an in-line switch, and a 4amp sealed lead acid battery for a run time of approx 2hrs. The pix below should be self explanatory..... The bigger light is 50w and requires at least a 7amp battery..... Lights are simply taped onto helmets and the battery lives in our camel packs..... These bulbs get very hot... so lots of cooling holes are needed......
The bulbs also emit a fair bit of light backwards, so I put a clear disk of red painted plastic on the rear for a 'freebie' tail light..............
TREE ROOTS ARE VERY HARD TO SEE IN THE DARK.....Ask me how I know..

Thats quite trick. Whered you get the batt?
clmintie
30th July 2008, 16:03
I get the batteries from JCAR in Manukau 4amp..$42 'ish and the 7amp..$35'ish
cheese
30th July 2008, 17:19
Get the batteries from an alarm place, much cheaper.
I got some samples of those cree lights, but with this china trip being extended out and stuff I never got the chance to make them up. I even got a new bulb that puts out about 1000 lumens and draws 1.2 amps.
Anyway jet lag is hitting me like a bitch so I've got to try and stay awake......

Yes, the cook has the kai sorted.
We'll probably start cooking about 7.00 ish or earlier if need be.
Yes, the forecast looks like showers. This doesn't phase us at all as Woodhill and in particular our location has its own micro climate. How often is it pissing down everywhere else but once you come down the hill its like "Wow this is sweet"
As far as the wind goes well, this doesn't phase us either as we are really sheltered there and the trees give us heaps of protection.
What ever way this will be a bit of fun. Another wacky adventure by wacky people LOL.

Agree wholeheartedly.... However, you will need much better lights than when dry, the wet ground and trees soak up the light and tree roots become black ice. We'll be there...:blip: (Need an umbrella smilie)

Just about to load up, aiming to be there about 1.30. Just had a look at the latest rain radar and have deduced two things.... 1/ Weather can't be too bad, cause the radar is still working  and 2/ I've decided that the big areas of blue must mean sunny, clear sky
Tomorrow is set aside for cleaning and drying, methinks........

Our lights worked pretty well, just took a while to get used to not knowing what was in the dark shadows. Definitely will do it again...
Grace is now officially quicker than me on the fast rough tracks.. I can still show her a thing or two in the tight twisty bits though, but it won't be for long.... :bye: The way she was working her clutch out of corners would have pleased Broxy.....
Nice to meet up with a few KB'ers....
Very good BBQ, thanks to Tony and his band of willing (?) workers for a cool evening.

Good night and so very different from a normal ride. I managed to find my way onto a track that went no where. In other words got lost.
Congratulations to those that pushed the boundaries. e.g the Big Dipper, getting knocked by deer (4 stroke), chasing poor little rabbits:spanking: LOL, and a big ups to those whom rode with the good old Dolphin battery for a light.
We will hold another one probably around Oct. If anyone has some innovative ideas for rides/races then let me know as we'd look at doing almost anything.
