View Full Version : Ideas for a cheap bike to tour South Island in summer?

Hi there,
My girlfriend and I are keen to tour the South Island 2up this summer. She isn't keen to saddle up on the back of my vfr 400 and I don't blame her. I'm a student so will be on the cheap. I was thinking maybe I could get something cheap and comfyish, which probably also means old. Something I could get my money back would be good. Any ideas for the unfussy and budget conscious appreciated.
Dan.

The FJ1200 IS a great bike, will go forever, and is LOW. GoGal rode mine and she stands 5 foot 3.5 inches on a good day (her words)

What is your budget? Cheap to one person may be expensive to someone else.
For touring the South Island 2 up you will need a 500 cc minimum, and preferably a 750 or bigger. Light weight bikes will manage, but the weight of an extra person plus gear could start to affect the handling.
Have a look at late 1980's GSX750ES models. They are generally reasonably priced and will cruise 2 up all day.

What sort of money do you plan spending?Think of the first number and double it!

I guess you better put a figure on (cheap) mate. I also go with the FJ 1200, no better bike for the money IMO. For me this is cheap. If not cheap then certainly good value.

Hi folks,
I don't think I can get rid of my vfr 400. It would be logical considering my financial situation but I ride it to massey every day and it the smile it puts on my face lasts at least 2 hours everyday.
I'm talking cheap, under 3 grand.

also means more room to carry stuff

hmmm. Good thinking. Perhaps an option long term. Might need a couple of summers for her to learn and be competent. At least bikes don't have a reverse gear, she's crap at backing a car!

get her a 250, and what better time to improve/teach riding is spending two weeks around SI. means you can carry enoguh gear, due if you both plan on going on the vfr i hope she knows how to pack very very lite

Always wanted a GPZ1100 B2, I know where one is but the guy wont sell it so the 750 is as close as I got
Saved it from a Pommy who'd been using it to commute from Darfield to Christchurch each day for work

Had one of those too.
There was recently a B1 for sale in Hamilton (owned by the guy campaigning the 1400 at Bonneville) that I had a look at. Needs a bit of work but would be a good project.
