View Full Version : Novice Cruise, Sunday 23rd Jan
Sparky
13th January 2005, 21:12
Are there any other novice riders out there who would like to join us, Jaybee and I (both new members)are going on a cruise on Sunday 23 Jan (weather permitting), starting from the Manurewa Botanical Gardens.
Planned route will be Brookby, Whitford, Maraetai, Clevedon, Kawakawa Bay, Kaiaua, Miranda, back onto SH2, Waitakaruru, Maramarua, Mangatawhiri, Happy Valley, Paparimu, Hunua and finish at Papakura with a few stops along the way to regroup and admire the scenery.
The idea is to meet a few fellow novice riders who can't or don't like to try to keep up with the big boys. :shit: All other welcome too of course. :2thumbsup
Jaybee and I are novices with old bikes and new licences (2 Months), wish it was the other way around ;)
We cruise between 70 and 100K and slow down for those "SCARY" corners (with the odd squirt to keep the engine cool) :ride:
So if anybody would like to come along that would be great. We'll meet at the Manurewa Botanical Gardens Carpark at 10 O'clock and depart about 10.30, finish at the car park opposite the Karaka Horse Sales yard by the Papakura on ramp.

Would love to join you.
But I need to be back in Mt Roskill before 4pm.
Would that be possible?
Also I don't have a clue where this meeting point is.
How far from Mt Roskill is it ?
Sparky
13th January 2005, 21:35
Manurewa is the next off ramp after Manukau City, turn Left at top of ramp and the gardens are right there, as far as being back on time?? You can always peel off if it getting too late and take a shorter route home or if others like we could meet at 9.30, love to see you there

Just looking at the rider training day thingie that someone has put up in another thread and I was wondering. Do you guys want me to come along for this one to try to answer any riding related questions that you might have? Or do you guys want to follow my lines etc on the road? (I'll adjust my pace to suit your needs).
Let me know and I'll organise something.

A FXR that needs an engine?
Your PHaT MTB?

You don't have to worry about the pace. Just do your own thing and have a look at what we are doing. Sparky's whole idea was for a ride without feeling intimidated by the faster guys. We will make sure that you do not dissapear in our mirrors. Then we'll ride behind you as well, to maybe give you a few pointers if you need or want them.

If you are referring to a KB ride as "another boy racer type ride", then I think you have the wrong perception of what an average KB ride is like. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and I respect yours' but is it based on experience or just rumors?

have experianced a KB ride from the AB Papakura and by the time we got to Puke we were left behind and thats the idea behind this ride people at our pace learners and novices as well as experiance to guide some of us from trainer wheels to R1's and have fun around what we all enjoy doin and thats 2 wheels of freedom

So what if someone has a big bike or is a faster rider. Yes we go fast on KB rides, yes we have competitiveness when riders with similar skill level are riding together. However when it comes to public safety, we do not act like idiots like most boyracers do. We do not drag race each other in the middle of the town or do donuts in the middle of the street etc etc.
All I meant with that post was comparing us to boyracers is wrong in so many ways and it is almost offensive.

I think it is fair enough to not interfere with Sparky's well organised plan for a Sunday cruise. As for the n00b training idea that I was sujesting, that'll have to be the next Sunday.

I certainly did not mean to offend anyone by my post, and if I have done so I apologise.
I have however been on KB rides before and in my opinion there is definately a "hoon" element involved in some of them.
I have no problem with anyone riding as they feel that they want to. I however am still newish to riding and like to take things at a slower pace......it's probably an age thing.......if I was a 20 year old boy, with a different bike, I would probably feel differently.
I know to avoid those particular rides that I think may not be my cup of tea.
As this ride was listed as a novice cruise I thought that it would fit the bill.
All I was saying was that if the type of ride was going to change, let me know, cause I wont join you as I know that I wont enjoy myself.
I am always keen and eager to get advice from more experienced riders and if anyone at any stage on a ride can give me some advice to improve how I ride then it would be gratefully accepted.
Apologies again if anyone was offended!

You get used to seeing who's going to come on the ride and you can tell from there usually. Even though there may be a TS or MR appearance, the majority of people are noobs on 250's, so I dont think you've got anything to worry about on this ride. Besides, you wont be last in the group, Yokai's coming :D

Definetly fair enough!! Though, I am sure from what I have heard of Velox's riding, you do not need to be a boy. A girl can ride pleanty hard and fast.
I know to avoid those particular rides that I think may not be my cup of tea.
As this ride was listed as a novice cruise I thought that it would fit the bill.

That is absolutly fair enough as well! I won't be attending this ride as it is not my cup of tea quite frankly. I was only going to come to help others. However I came to the conclusion that it is in everyone's best interest to organising a seperate event for helping out n00b riders.
I am always keen and eager to get advice from more experienced riders and if anyone at any stage on a ride can give me some advice to improve how I ride then it would be gratefully accepted.

Ok OK OK, I feel it is time to shed some light on this. Sparky, Jaybee,GET READY for a news flash. I believe the people you thought you were riding with on a KB ride, was INFACT a group of Triumph and Aprilla riders. You pulled into AB and literally pulled out behind the Triumph people before anyone had a chance to say hi. (These were not slow old Triumphs.) So infact I dont think you have been on a KB ride. :confused2

Howdy Guys and Girls, seems there are quite a few people who like the idea of a cruise so it will be great if all of you people turn up on Sunday, As stated in the beginning we are definitly not goig to go fast so Lucyloo you got the right idea. Lets just cruise, enjoy the scenery and chat. If more experienced rider are willing to share their knowlage, that is coooool. But if Motoracer wants to do that as a seperate trip I will probably one of the first people to sign up. So Mototracer thanks, let us know what's happening.
As for"L" plates is concerned: HEY I"VE GOT ONE TOOO, that's what the ride is all about so come along and meet us all and get a few more K's on the clock. That's as far as I see it the only way to learn to enjoy our bikes and ride with others. dveus, I'll text you on the day if you like as we will regroup a few times before we get to Miranda and we'd love to have you tag along the rest of the way. So I hope I answered most concerns people might have and love to see as many of you as we can. Thought we'd travel in small groups and have a few stops along the way so we all can catch up.
Lets have a happy run guys :shifty:

Ok OK OK, I feel it is time to shed some light on this. Sparky, Jaybee,GET READY for a news flash. I believe the people you thought you were riding with on a KB ride, was INFACT a group of Triumph and Aprilla riders. You pulled into AB and literally pulled out behind the Triumph people before anyone had a chance to say hi. (These were not slow old Triumphs.) So infact I dont think you have been on a KB ride. :confused2
someone yell at me on Sunday if i do the same thing again aye :disapint: must be alsimas setting in

Didnt mean to make anyone feel stupid dude, but I went on that ride and I am THE WORLDS SLOWEST RIDER, (apart from Crashe, hehehe) the fast guys are up the front, I never felt any preassure to speed up, I went at my pace. They wait for you at all the turn offs. I would say its good if there is a couple of you at the back, wont be so lonely, hehehe. But you ride at your pace. :ride:
:2thumbsup no worries i feel stupid the best of times  suppose we should have checked and introduced ourselfs, but when we arrived everybody took of so......... Never mind a great day for a ride.
Sounds like everyone is claiming to be slow  hmm we'll see on sunday . By what standard are we gauging "slow" :sly:

So that nobody rides off on the wrong group lets give a short description of the type and color of your bike. Ill start K3 gsxr600 Alstare paint colors (For those of you that dont watch supersport that is Yellow and purple) it has a scraped exhaust and right hand side fiaring. I wear silver spool leather and a silver shoei helmet.

Its the black and white Virago cruiser... :scooter:
My helmet is white with a rainbow sticker and a AA sticker on the back.
Oh yeah and I am vertically challenged....lol
Just park up near the food place, but not in the disabled carparks.....
and just ask the riders "Are you a KB'er?"
They will either answer you "Yep" or look at you blankly... then you will know if you got the right group or not...lol

I'll be there, I need a ride after the past two weeks without...
It may be an idea to set a few ground rules if we have lots of newbie riders, just to keep things flowing along. The best group rides work when the person(s) in front are in charge. They choose the places to stop, and everyone regroups at that point, not inbetween at your own whim. As long as the people up the front are sensible enough, this works, and in my experience, this is how a KB ride normally happens. There may be fast guys up the front, but they always stop at the intersections.
Also, a little group etiquitte for those who don't know it yet:
When riding behind someone, particularly on straights, ride in a staggered pattern ie first person on right hand wheel track, second on left hand wheel track etc. This gives you more stopping room... Around twisties this obviously falls apart, but well....
Be careful passing people unless you know them. Overtaking can be a great source of confusion when you are riding in a group. It is probably better to overtake as if the bike infront was a car, and go into the other lane.
Particularly on more organised rides (this may not qualify so much) it is the responsibility of the people at the back and front to make sure everyone is ok. If anyone does have a crash/breakdown, don't all immediately stop. Make sure you can park your bike safely off the road if you have to stop (even if it is 1km up the road), and you won't all create a hassle for the rest of the traffic. Usually the leader of the group will be stopping regularly anyway, so there shouldnt be any need for everyone to stop at the particular point that an incident takes place.

Fo those of you who may have worried about my disappearance, I had
a minor low speed bin in gravel at the side of the road in Clevedon. I am fine, bike is bent but rideable. Will start another thread to let you know the details.
Hope you all had a good day. I didn't have anyone's cellphone no. 'til i got back into town, so I couldn't contact anyone.

23rd January 2005, 15:41
Sorry to hear of your little incident, El Dopa. A similar thing happened to me some time ago at the Kaiawa toilet - they had put some new gravel down and it was a lot deeper than before. I ended up with my right ankle trapped under the bike. Fortunately no damage to me or the bike but I needed help to lift it off!
The ride today was great. Only problem was the frequent stops. Normally I don't mind but the only way to keep cool today was to keep moving, and within a minute of stopping I was dripping with sweat. I did ask if anyone would mind if I took my leather pants off but I got a funny look so decided not to...
And then at a stop on the way back I noticed the XJR slowly tilting over as the sidestand dug into the melting tar.
But an enjoyable ride with some good roads and good company. Thanks, everyone.

Very nice ride........
I got late (as usual)......... reached the car park by 10:50......... no one there......
So did some riding around until I found an internet cafe...... went and printed out Sparky's map
highlighted the route, stuck it to my tank and took off........ was a lot of fun trying to catch up....... did my best with my less than 1000kms riding experience..... was trying to do a steady 110 on the straight bits.......
Got passed by some dude on a silver GSXRSomething... was big enough to be a 1000,
I never even saw the fella in my mirrors........ he just appeared next to me passed me and dissapeared ahead........
Caught ZApf and others waiting for ELDopa, they were getting quite worried by this time and I think one of them went to find you........glad to know you're safe.
Anyway I managed to carry on and the rest of you know the rest

So I do hope that he made it to work riding with one hand....lol
Yep a great day riding.... I was just cruising at 80 to 90km most of the time.... 100 on the straights.... much slower on the corners... but it was great.... for me to find the right lines on the corners....
There was just one patch right on the windy corner where the tarseal had totally melted.... was wondering about Two Smoker hitting it.... but he saw it in time...
26 bikes in all when we all sat down for fish-n-chips... well Zarf showed up late, but he was running tail end charlie, well thats his story...lol.
I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed the ride it was a nice casual pace....
Looking forward to see more pic's.
It was also great to see Riff Raff back out on her bike... Riff I hope your neck is ok tonight.... particulary after one bump on the road... and I was most impressed how you didnt want to have a ride on the back of that trailer, when it pulled out right in front of you.... impressive braking skills.....
The best part was to see Riff Raff challenging a Kid on a go-kart for a race in Papakura carpark.... ummmm the kid won.... but Riff raff gave it a good go for the first lap....to be overtaken on the straight....lol

Well, my first KB event and the trusty GN let me down... again. So why does everyone think they run and run?!
Many thanks to:
Sparky and Jaybee for organising
JayBee for offering to escort me whilst I found out if Frostie's (first) attempt to fix the problem helped - sorry for not sticking with you, JB, I had to find out if the problem was sorted which meant opening up the throttle...
The biker who helped out El Dopa (see http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=156998#post156998 for that story!) who kindly escorted me back to town with El Dopa's bike loaded up in his truck - whilst I figured out the only way to ride it was to use half-throttle or less, otherwise it just died...
But most of all Tony Frost (he's grrreeeeaaaaattttt! Maybe only the poms will get this, but ho ho ho all the same) for completely fixing the GN. Maybe he can elaborate on the technical details, seeing as I am mechanically challenged, but basically he fully stripped the carb, reset the fuel mixture from Coleman's last effort, found a loose wiring (for the coil?), and spotted a piece of wire in the spark plug where there shouldn't be any bits of wire at all.
So no problems at all on the ride home from his yard - it's mint. At least as mint as it ever was :)
See you next time, hopefully!

Yeah, I'm really sorry about the lack of communication. Next time we maybe need to spread the mobile no's around a bit more.
I've had a quick look at the bike. Needs: a new mirror and mirror pole/stand? Possibly a bit more difficult than it appears at first glance, just 'cos it broke off near to the clutch/base, and a new front left indicator bulb and cover.
Also, the steering has been bent back into shape, mostly. But I want to get it checked in case it has the potential to develop into something serious.
Apart from that it seems to be all cosmetic.

Well today's ride was great. I met up with everyone at Clevedon after deciding at the last minute to come along for a "short" blat. Good to see so many people turn up, and especially so many 250s and newer riders. Well done guys for organising the ride - I bet you didn't expect so many people. This created a little bit of a logistical problem, but on the whole I think the ride went pretty well.
Neck was pretty good for most of the ride - there were a few nasty bumps I went over that caused me to wince, but all in all pretty good.
By the time we all got back to Papakura I wasn't quite ready for the ride to end - so I took on a kid in a go kart while everyone was fart arsing around trying to decide whether they were going home or going for a bit more of a blat. Does anyone have pics of that?
So then TS, Dveus, Zapf, Justsomeguy and myself headed to Bombay Autobahn where we caught up with SPman, Bestfun and their friend. After a beverage and long natter, TS, Dveus, Zapf and myself headed out to Tuakau, then a short blat down 22, turned round and then out to Port Waikato (nice ride to PW, btw) before heading home. So good to be back on my bike after 6 weeks. I'm also soooooooooo ready for a bigger bike. Thanks everyone. I had a blast today.

FINALY... good to see you got out there matey!!! :wavey:
hope you don't sufer to much over the next couple of days!

Well everyone, thanks for the ride :niceone: I had a great time... That was virtually a KB ride, the only thing missing was a few of the fast guys, and Death doing wheelies....
I hope that everyone saw that KB rides are generally organised and people wait at the intersections for others....
If you want to come on a normal KB ride, you basically only need to be able to do the speed limit (100kmh) because there are others that do this on KB rides rather than going balls out.... So now you guys wont be scared :niceone: If it is going to be a fast ride, the organiser of the ride will say on the thread that is will be a fast ride, and not recommended for slower riders... But if you see a ride being organised and it doesnt have that warning, by all means pop along.... I wont have my 600 on the road for a while, so there will always be a smaller bike there....
Thanks for all the pics, and sorry if i broke your camera with my ugly RG150 hehehe.....

Why don't you all turn up to the rides then? I turn up and there's no-one to be slower and less hectic with!! Apart from MikeL occasionally.....
It's not that scary, really......Unless you pick an obviously fast ride......
Well, this is the first one I went on, 'cos i'm still on my L's (not for long, with a bit of luck), and it happened to coincide with me feeling confident enough in my own abilities to stretch my wings a bit.
That's why I've not been out and about before.
Still, when there's another one, drop me a PM if you're going, and we'll form a rearguard.

That wasn't particularly aimed at you, it was aimed at everyone who won't come out on KB rides.
Unfortunately I like riding at 110-120, and going relatively fast around corners, so i end up caught in the middle, without enough top speed to keep up with the slower "faster" guys.... Irritating....
I'll certainly note when I'm going, but there won't be many, cos I've not had much spare time recently, and I'm going on holiday in March....

Dunno..... :sneaky2:
Whoever it was, it gave me something to think about rather than just riding on my own like I normally end up doing at times :D
