:angry2:Its finally stopped raining down here and went out the back yard this morning to find a huge hole in my vege garden:angry:I put a 6ft long piece of wood in there with no sign of the bottom, will just have to let it drain before finding out just how deep it is,i have a mate who works for a roading outfit so hopefully he will be able to help out with fill and a truck so it shouldnt be to much of a hassle to fix.

More to the point...where did all the dirt go? No use filling it, if there's an 'outlet'.

Is there (was there ) a storm water drain running under the garden ?
When they collapse, that is usually the result.

1st August 2008, 15:48
if it was a storm water drain surely it would not be 6 feet deep!!
Maybe you had some hugh rabbit warren which has collapsed. WHat better place right under a vegie patch lol

Depending on where you live - it may be worth getting it checked out.
It could be a sign of something more serious. Better to get it checked early before it rapidly expands and 1/2 your home falls into it (top tip - move the picasso to the room closest to the hole for insurance reasons)

Sorry about your hole dude, hope it's nothing too serious. The demise of your veggie garden though is something to celebrate surely, nasty green watery things.

Not originally, but if it has collapsed right under the garden, the waterflow digs a hole.
Scenario gets worse if you live on a hill side.

Seriously, its not what they call a "maori drain" is it ? Drainage they used to use in the old days, a dirty great hole filled with stones I believe

Contact the council, they should investigate, if there is a pipe nearby the hole will continue to form even if you fill it. It doesn't need a collapsed pipe to create a tomo, a displaced joint or missing rubber ring will allow the soil to dissapear.
I have repaired some that were over 3m deep to the offending pipeline, council service plans will help.

Whats the problem? People pay a damn fortune for a water feature at the bottom of their garden.
Put in some water lillies and bung in some ceramic frogs and hey presto! A new selling feature

Get Heilen Klerke to come around for a publicity visit.
If "it" accidentally falls into the hole, fill it in immediately. If it was an old septic tank, it was made precisely for this job!

i've had a similar thing like this happen to me.
Was drilling post holes for a twenty metre retaining wall on my property, got about 3/4 of the way along, was drilling away and the borer went sideways and strait down. Pulled the borer out and stuck a torch in, couldn't really see the bottom. So out with a spade and opened it up, turned out to be about a metre deep, maybe 1.2 metre square. Couldn't find any signs of where the dirt was being flushed away so i decided to chuck some fill back in there. Thought sweet as, might be a trailer load of clay (bad calculation), and turned out chucking three and a half trailer loads of clay in there, all by wheel barrow. Lucky i was a fit bastard at the time.
I you fill it back up make sure you compact the f out of it, or it will sink again next winter
Have fun

All done, checked out the drainage etc with the council and its not a stormwater etc so filled it up,with 12 ton of shingle, took the easy way out and got it delivered in a concrete mixer, put the chute out and let her go,will probably subside a bit but that will give me some room to put some topsoil down. The water had subsided enough this morning to see the concrete cap that had broken and fallen through.Managed to throw in a heap of crap that i had been meaning to take to the tip.;)

Hope you didn't turf the XS in there accidentally ;)
Sure looks like a decent hole though
But it's just a pup compared to the ones we got up at Huntly in the mines when an old mine shaft would decide to collapse  had one pretty much swallow a Cat 955 Pay-loader one night  awesome sight to see the bucket of such a big machine sticking out a hole

Built a greenhouse (10m x 52m) back in the day. Last couple of holes drilled for the posts hit serious drainage metal! Seems we were drilling into an old septic field... That could have been real fun if we had not filled the holes with concrete just before the building inspector arrived

Back in the day when i grandfather was a govt arcitech and the were building National womens hospital they found a rather large whole (tunnel really) formed by the lava flows from one tree hill they had to build a retaining wall at each end to contain the fill and fill up the large hole so they could continue to build it.

 take pictures if you do  could organise a KB treasure hunt in your back yard :pinch:
Or leave it there for generations to come with a plaque engraved with "It leaked & it seeped, so Mike buried the bastard deep"
Just get some silastic & put a light smear on either side of the gasket before you fit it back into place
