View Full Version : Anyone ever got a speeding ticket while overtaking?

Jizah
1st August 2008, 14:44
I got my first speeding ticket today on the way to work :( Was at about 6.30am, was still dark and it was pouring down. Some clown pulled out in front of me from a park outside a dairy, so I jammed on my brakes, nothing too major, but I was a tad annoyed.

About 400metres up the road, he was still only doing about 40-45km/h and soaking wet I decided I'd just overtake... Before I am even back in my lane, headlights light up from a car park 25metres ahead or so to my right, followed closely by the blue and reds.

$80 fine for 65 in a 50 zone. I can't argue that I wasn't speeding, but it was literally for less than 10 seconds!

But yeah, anyone else ever got a ticket while overtaking before?

Yeah, it was years ago now. Pulled out to pass a truck in a 100km zone. Can't remember now exactly how fast I was going but it was only around 10-15km's over the limit and for a very short space of time. About 1k up the road i had a mufty car behind me lights flashing. I got a ticket. The humourous thing was that I had already got 3 tickets within a year so was just waiting for constable plod to come collect my licesence when I got it.:argh:

There’s an insidious abysmal little twat; whose posturous position of being a ‘policeman’, in his mind, is a kin to being knighted – this particular troglodyte struts and poses his stuff, like a medieval slayer of dragons, between Te Awamutu and Te Kuiti on a regular basis, on board his holden steed.

He loves to park just down the road from the end of passing lanes, and sit there out of the view of any body daring enough to use the over taking lanes to overtake any heavily laden milk tanker or stock truck, then ping you for speeding – I got done for 116 klm/hr, over taking a truck.

I know I deserve a thrashing for my insolent debauched ways – but I just felt like it smacked of entrapment.
I would think it was safer to just get out there and get passed – but what do we know?
Speed kills, and I’m a bad boy.

Yup, overtook doing 119 on SH1 and blight lights everywhere... hard to argue with as the law isn't on our side...

and speed only kills when he stops struggling and his larynx goes soft in your hands... just turn off the lights and ride away slowly...

True true, what's the point of them bloody passing lanes, ya sit behind some monkey doing 80k,whilst he's eatin smoking and texting for miles and as soon as ya get to a passing lane the bastard speeds up to 110- 120k. If ya don't pass the geezer ya know he's gonna be doing 65 in a 50 and 80 in a 100 zone for the next 3 hours. Dare to keep the traffic flowing by overtaking though and your public enemy No1. :calm:

Yep, when I was young, stupid and driving a piece of shit car that used to overheat with too much around town driving. It got hot, I floored it, passed a car, but had no idea I was been chased by the MOT. He caught up with me about a km down the road and issued me with an 80km in a 50km zone. He was rather angry until he realized I was just a young idiot and not a drunk young idiot. I think from memory that cost me $80 which was quite a bit back then, but I totally deserved it if not more.:spanking: I pulled my head in a little after that!

That sucks man.
Another example of the police obsession with the dreaded speeding motorist.
"You cannot exceed 100k sir..."
"Not even during a passing manouvre sir..."
"Yes, I know the truck/dick/whatever was travelling at 80k sir..."
"5k over is STILL speeding sir..."
"Blah, blah, blah sir..."
This is a classic example of why a good radar detector is a must if you want to avoid this kind of so called law enforcement.

Small print:
Any 95-to-100kph-on-the-dot types need not reply.

Just to add a little bit of light to this thread :innocent:

I was on my way to Hamilton when I got stuck behind a truck doin bout 85kph, was windy as heck and I was on the little ZXR250. Finally got to a straight, pulled out and got to 140kph as I hate being on the other side of the road... Car came around the corner and it was a cop :buggerd: At this point I was already at the truck cab, tucked in revvin the bike and so I decided to just pull in front of the truck. At that point the cop would of already got me any ways... I was terrified as I didn't want to get a ticket! But the coppa just flashed his lights :2thumbsup

Yep, been done as well. Missus says to take it easy going to Napier and back to see the family. So yours truly does exactly that.

Now bear in mind that I've done Papakura to Napier running in my Batmobile RX7 in 3 hours there and 3 hours ten minutes back seeing my parents for lunch with my sister in the car. Running in so not allowed to use the second turbo which means no more than 4,000 RPM good for 195kmh which I tried to do all the way there and back.

next time on the GSX1400 in two hours 50 minutes sitting on 260kmh across the Rangitikei plains and often on the Matamata staights.

I'm in the car with the missus and daughter heading back from Taupo before Tokoroa travelling North going no more than 109kmh as much as possible to keep the tribe happy and overtake three cars slugging along on the main overtaking lanes heading up the long hill. I no sooner pull in "behaving myself" when a HP comes over the rise while I'm sitting on a measly 117kmh, nearly causes a major accident doing a u turn and nabs me for $120 bucks. Man was I pissed :( Safety? Like hell.

Thats why you always overtake on a corner, preferably blind as those pasing lanes just are not safe from cops.

The chance of a cop parking or being able to see/ get a radar is greatly reduced on corners.

Rember the golden rule. Redline To the Deadline.

2nd August 2008, 15:35
These are voluntary fines if the cop used radar to measure your speed.

The radar will report the strongest and fastest signal to the operator.

But when there are multiple vehicles in the beam, the ticket can be defended with a high probability of success, as radar is not approved for use in this mode.

Prove there were multiple vehicles in the beam. Your word against the copper. Not a hope in hell mate. Aside from that, either way you're losing wages in court whilst arguing the toss and risking additional fine & court fees.

Yet another cop I passed ignored the fucktard ("My SSS" or something stupid like that on his plate) driving at 100km/h just 2 feet from my car boot this morning outside Morrinsville. Ha ha...If you are passing someone, it's not rocket science to deduce that there were two vehicles in the beam...

And you assume thats its your word against the cop.

That pre-supposes that the cop will tell a lie in court over something as minor as a speeding ticket.

Its your choice. You can pay every ticket you get. I don't care. But this would be a ticket worth defending.

passed a Truck south of Te Kuiti and a muffti car was coming the other way (miles away and I was perfectly safe ) he locked his radar at 130 km/h but didn't put his lights on. He did a U - turn and eventually put his lights/siren on me along the Te Kuiti by-pass he gave me two tickets cause I was doing 90 there (it is 50 k).

His wee ginger mustache was fair quivering. He must have thought I was going to do a runner as a marked patrol car came from the other direction and stopped to see if he needed any help.

I was already on 90 points
Consequently I was commuting by train for 3 months and about $450 in fines.

[....] and soaking wet I decided I'd just overtake...Completely ignoring the speeding which I think is irrelevant, it is important to notice that there are sometimes things that prod our emotional state and cause us to take actions we normally wouldn't. Your example is a seemingly innocent one, until you brake on a white line that you cant see in the dark and the wet.

A large part of roadcraft is keeping our emotional state in check.

Bummer about the ticket, and yes I have done the same. My latest ticket (last week) was the heinous crime against society of doing 105k in a 100k area with a trailer on.

First speeding ticket ever was in a cage on the end of a passing lane, 114 or something like that, while passing a guy sitting at 95km/h with a trailer on and jamming on his brakes for the corners. Cop was on the side of the road, hidden halfway up a driveway. Felt pretty pissed off really.

Absolutely. In a car the net result of our heightened feelings of aggression or fright might have little real impact on us and what's around us; on a bike the same reactions can have quite a different end result.

When someone pisses us off it takes a lot of control to not rise to the challenge we perceive has been leveled at us. It's easy to take such things personally and want to return in kind, but the risk is greatly increased to those of us on 2 wheels. In order to self-protect we need to be able to control our responses perhaps more tightly than a car driver.

Sound unfair? Probably, but then if you can't do that then maybe being on a bike is not such a good idea for people who are unable to keep their cool.

You do realise that the open road speed limit for a light vehicle towing is 90kph don't you?

I haven't had a ticket for speeding while overtaking but I've been pulled over twice and warned when doing the same.

First case I'd just overtaken a ute doing 100kph on the Hutt motorway - belching smoke and that was the only reason I overtook it. Cop was parked on the side of the road around a bend and put his lights on when I went past him. Had a chat and he asked why I had been speeding and I told him I just wanted to get past the ute as it was smoking so badly. Gave me a warning which had the desired effect - I was bloody careful driving along there for months afterwards!

Second time was just north of Shannon. I'd been following this old bastard doing between 70-80kph all the way from the south side of Shannon in the twisty bits. No chance of overtaking as there were always oncoming vehicles in the parts where it's safe to overtake. Got through Shannon (he did 35kph in the 50 zone) and he stuck at 80kph - until the road was clear and I pulled out to overtake him when he put his foot down. I got up to about 110kph and as I pulled in, a cop came over the slightly elevated bridge along the straight and flashed his lights for me to pull over. Explained the situation to him and he also let me off with a warning as he'd locked the radar on the guy I was overtaking (he was doing 101kph at that point) and didn't know exactly what speed I was doing.

I like to get out, overtake & get back in.

Me too.

A few years back there was a rash of fatal head-on accidents. The ranking officer responsible for traffic went on the TV News saying the Police couldn't understand what was causing the problem.

Apart from the sheer random aspect of statistics, I thought then and still do, that it's largely to do with people trying to overtake at the minimum possible speed.

This may avoid getting a speeding ticket but it does increase the exposure to head-on accidents.

111kph just north of the Tawa offramp heading out of Wgtn. just as I had exited a line of faster traffic and moved into the slower lane

Cop was on a mission thats for sure he reakon I should've done a runner and said he wouldn't of been able to catch me and he wouldn't be giving me a $80 ticket

bloody sure he was a newbie as when I pulled over he rode past me and stopped another 100m up the road:lol:

Sorry but I had to laugh at him and said no said you had to give me a ticket.

anyway I would rather a $80 ticket than one for a few hundard

August 08!!!

What the heck ya doin trawling thru posts over a year old and dragging them back up, are you that bored?

I don't trawl through old posts as such, more through checking out peoples most reped posts. Time does not necessarily mean irrelevance, as witnessed by some very good fresh posts. There is gold in them thar hills

And yes, overtaking a mum and her spawn, while spending more time looking/feeding/entertaining said spawn rather than watching the road hurtle by at 70-75 kph on SH16 heading from Wellsford( about four years ago). Behind her was some young FAG with baggy/low-riding jeans, offensively (almost YR64LIFE-like) white shoes, ski jacket, no gloves, and not to mention the floral boxers! Got sick of waiting so went past them. 150 kph in a 100kph zone=$640 fine, 50 demerit points, 4 week suspension. JOY! Lesson learnt! I now attend trackdays, and ride on the open road at 70kph in front of as many mums and young FAGS as possible!

What were you riding?

Actually I can't quite remember (it was more than 2 decades ago) - it might have been a Suzuki GT250X7 or it might have been in a car.

I got a similar ticket...riding behind a twat doing 40 kms...came to a straight and zipped out then back in...only problem was the cop car that came around the corner up ahead as I was pulling in. :bash: $80 ticket for 63 in a 50km...gutted. Not to mention the demerit points!

Couple of years ago, late for work but ticking along at a relatively mild 108-110. Got to a looong passing lane with a stock truck 'n trailer doing about 80 and a Holden stuck 3" from its bum up ahead (should have been the first warning).

By half way down the lane I was on top of them and the Holden hadn't moved (had been right behind it from before the passing lane, so it's not like they'd just caught up to it too). I indicated, pulled into the passing lane and just before I come up on the Holden the f#cker pulls right out in front of me with no indication. I had to jump on the brakes pretty hard to miss him, he then proceeds to tick past the truckie at 90, clears the truck then runs out the rest of the passing lane at 90 without pulling in! :bash:

By now I'm pretty pissed, round the next corner and there's a nice clear straight so I drop it and pop past him doing 115. F#cker starts chasing me at 110 for a couple of K's before flashing me - bloody mufti! :eek5:

Young gun in the passenger jumps out and starts with the usual "In a bit of a hurry?" so I admit that I was doing what I was doing but I have a polite but firm go at him detailing what his dropkick mate in the pilots seat had been doing. Threw in a bit of "chasing me without lights on seems a little like he was trying to bait me" just for good measure.

Thankfully they were "out of tickets" so I had to be on my way...

Speed kills. Just slow down.

"speed kills" is the best you got when he's doing 65 ?

there's a survey on here asking where/when people speed and 15% replied never so under them in the dictionary it should say "see you" ?
