:bleh: Yeah I shit you not, I rung Classic Cover insurance and told them all about track days, they asked "is it a timed event" ,I said "no", they asked "is it a race", I said "no but it is on a race track,it gives bikers a chance to go fast without the fear of loosing your licence" she said "you will be covered then, but I will check with the manager", she did and said "yes that is covered", I asked "can I have that in writing as part of my policey schedule" she said "yes I will post it out tonight".

Not only all of that but I was paying $1176 with AMI (no track day cover) and classic cover was $655.00 for $14000.00 cover
I am stoked.
Wont make me ride any quicker though lol:apint:

I too am with them after ringing about five different places for quotes however I am sure you need to be over 30 to get them to insure you, they were the cheapest for me by over $300.00 on 9K cover.

man I am gonna join up, as my company (STAR) has just sent me the bill for next years insurance with a new 10% surcharge on top(even though my bike is worth less now & i have incurred no tickets & made no claims at all). good timing. i wonder if it counts for puke testing days also? HOLD ON aren't NZI owned by state?

I just called them for a quote. I have a feeling their phones are going to be running hot...
They had to check with the manager again, but the wording was- as long as it is not a timed event and there is no element of competition, and it is for the purposes of training and improving your skills then you're sweet. As soon as you start a clock or there is an element of competition, you're no longer covered Those are pretty much her exact words as I remember them.
I wonder if new bikes with lap timers would be covered? Also, I guess track day organisers need to be careful to ensure there is at least the impression that riders are getting some tips and pointers from experienced racers?

Well fuck me I did the same thing and I'm covered too. They just said as long as it's not a race and it's just for 'training' I'm fine.

Our four bikes are covered by them. They insist the bikes be double locked on our policy documents. :Police:

Try "Bet they'll start getting worried about it after the first 20 or so CLAIMS". My advice, don't give 'em cause for concern. Ride well, ride wise, ride safe.

Yikes, I'm with AMI....(runs off and checks policy) mines around $500 for half as much cover, and thats with discount for no claims+multiple policies. Hmmm more investigation required....
AMI have been really good with my other dealings with them

This brings a question to mind.
If your bike is insured for a Track day and My bike is not, What happens in the scenario that I crash into you?
Normally it would be a case of: I say sorry, You punch me in the nose and we both fix our own bikes.
But if your bike is insured, Then I suspect your insurance company will end up chassing me to cover the cost of your $20 000 R1! Scary stuff!
Sorry,, but it needs to be brought up.

good point, and no idea. call your insurer first and ask,
This is the point. For those of us that only have cheap "Race Track only" bikes and No insurance on them. We are happy to pay for our own crashes. But now that we can be sharing the track with expensive Insured bikes, We can't ride hard anymore, cause the risk of having to pay for your bike damage as well, (through your insurance company) is too great a risk. So if we can't ride hard any more on A RACE TRACK,,, what the point of going to a race track?? We would almost need only insured bike riding the track together and then Non-insured bikes riding together. What a headache!!

you wouldnt believe it but state do the same thing. it says the same shit in the policy(not a race, not preparing for a race) all i had to do to prove it was a signed indemnity and an interveiw

That's the same story we got in the MX5 club for track days. I seem to recall a Ferrari owner winning a shit fight with his insurance co. after they refused to pay out. He used the same argument that it was not in competition.

I can't see timing being a problem either? Because of course lap times would be taken to separate groups according to speed and to make the track a safer place.

Well the point of the day is not to blat around racing, cos not everyone is a racer. It's more about getting to know your bike a bit more in a more controlled environment where you don't have to worry about on coming traffic.

The rules of race always state that it's the overtakeeeeeees head on the block for overtaking. Not the person being overtaken. If it's not safe, then don't do it. If you're not sure, then don't do it. If the slower one isn't all that predictable, then don't do it.. See the pattern?

When you're on the track anyway, the time between passing a slow person the first and second time is often a heap of laps, unless they're really slow, in which case either the slow person should be pulled off, or the fast person pulled off and put into a better class. I've seen this too many times and organisers need to do something about it. I've been on the Puke track on my CBR250 wringing the nuts off it, but being passed by the thous and virtually being knocked as they pass.. There needs to be at least 2 classes I reckon - 1 for newbies and anything up to 400, then another for 600s up..

Anyhoo, while I've been typing this, I've just got off the phone with my insurer, State. I have full cover on my bike, and they told me as long as I don't use it in any sort of competitive way, I'm covered on the track.
Call your insurer today and find out!

ya BJ ya just nailed it on the head . either one person is waaay too fast for the class theyre in or the other is waay too slow.
There are things going to happen at the 10th april track day that I hope will prevent this.
3 speed groups and people watching to be sure everybody stays safe.
As well as that if someone is being balked by a slower rider then a run through the pits for the faster rider should sort that out. -a pit runthrough is worth about 30 odd seconds-plenty of time for the other person to dissapear into the distance.
There will be NO timing gear so no chance of it being called a race in any way
keep in mind Taupo isnt a speed track--its set up to reward good riding.
