Currently looking into replacing the zx10 with something naked perhaps... keep hold of that damned elusive license. The 990 supermoto, just released this year has certainly caught my eye, looking like a very capable, almost mythical do-all bike. Considering I barely ever ride more than one bike before buying anything, I thought I might do it right this time... and decided to seriously look at the superduke as well, having already ridden a tuono.

I contacted my local KTM (lets call it store 1) and they didn't hold them on the floor, and they recommended I contact AMPS, as store 1 was some what ... restricted by NZ HQ, so could get one in if I was certain I wanted that, plus, they wouldn't trade my 10 (I like convenience).

OK... I was never particularly a fan of AMPS, I consider them a bit stuck up and snooty, but in I went. First visit wasn't too bad, they were being shipped to NZ etc. Second visit, more than half an hour, not a single sales person approached me, despite me doing all but dis-assembling it. Third visit went much better, one was on the floor, not sold, but I wanted to demo. Salesperson would locate one, and let me know. 2 weeks later, no contact, turns out he is out of the country on a short trip, but no-one knows what progress there has been. Its possible KTM NZ won't provide one?

Phoned up another dealer in Aucks, lets say store 2. They tell me they are not allowed to deal with the lc8 range (690 bikes are the lc4 engine, adventure, superduke, supermoto 990 bikes use the vtwin lc8 engine), by KTM NZ, and its best I contact AMPS.

Well KTM NZ, I really want a ktm demo, back to back, but you are currently doing a damn fine job of fucking me off, and I was already aware you had ridiculous margins. I believe you are the only branch in the world not controlled by KTM HQ. Lets hope this is fixed soon. :2guns:

What did u think of the Tuono?? Was it the standard or factory version?

I won't go too off topic, as this is a KTM NZ hating thread  , but in brief...

Was the standard, fantastic handling, very very easy to flick from side to side. Could have been a practically brand new engine, but there was a gap between opening the throttle and the actual response that killed it for me (used to instant response, and expect it). Its also far less practical when it comes to carrying luggage, tank range isn't huge (eg, supermoto has a 19L tank), and its really a road bike, naked sportsbike perhaps. Supermoto has more possibilities for off road.

Must be Aussie and us, as NZ branch is owned/run by Aussie.
Why not give Boyd's a call in Hamilton?

Yes, I believe that is the case.. forgotten the name of the people that sort out KTM nz/au.

Don't really want to go out of town, easier to deal with Auckland, as I want to trade the 10, they probably want all the bits for it as well etc, but very shortly, yeah, I will contact Hamilton. I wonder if KTM NZ restricts them as well? :oi-grr: Also, I have planned a very good test route to fully test the bikes... which involves specific auckland roads and corners.

Birthday on the 12th of August, want a nice birthday present  ... and I have been wanting to try the supermoto since December/January (it only arrived in april/may iirc).

edit: Boyds or any dealer in Hamilton are not listed under dealers on ktm.co.nz. Are they an official dealer of KTM?

It's owned by Jeff Leisk - former MX Champ.

Interesting that KTM NZ's website doesn't even list the 990 SM, whereas Aussie's does....hmmmm
Maybe it's worth contacting KTM NZ direct: http://www.ktm.co.nz/index.php?id=3&PHPSESSID=693e65c50e05ad9623eba8c7173bdc6c

If I wanted to speak to them... I know where the HQ is in East Tamaki, its under 20min from both home and work. S'pose I should probably speak to them... do I trust myself not to shout at their obvious efforts to favour one dealer, and cobble the guys that are genuinely good...

edit: the 950SM was last years model, however, the 950 SMR is continued through to this year, while they sell old stock afaik. Don't even know if a 990 SMR is actually planned. Also more complex is that the USA for example, is not planned to have the 990SM at all.

I feel for that bugger (edit... I wondered if that was a past owner, the PP were a clue)... its been on the market for ages, I've had my eye on it long time... but I need to ride the superduke and supermoto back to back. Because of my road background, I think the superduke could be suitable, however, the supermoto is like a heavy motard, which is reliable... and that idea is immensely fun, plus it has luggage options, longer suspension travel etc.

i dont, if he had a more realistic price on it 6 months ago it would be sitting in my garage instead of this shitty old Triumph.

its an awesome bike, being the R version means the seat is abit hard and your arse takes a pounding (but not in a honda riding way).

mmm the pipes are not cheap... can't remember if it has the full system, or slip ons... at least the rc8 full system is more expensive... (Laughably so).

Also means no pillions... so no chicks... aaaah mmmmm yes. Have heard the R is a bit stiff all round, can probably change the setup a little... but yeh, just not quite what I am after.

whining: a/m pipes + ear plugs
smacks: wear decent leather with armour... or get one of quasi's knox back protectors, trashies model comes with kidney protectors :D
ballast falling off: luggage gear and top box... sorted

plus I'm single, so the groping is all good, as they struggle to sit still. All depends how you look at it :innocent::wari:

I previously owned an 06 Tuono and traded that a year ago on a KTM 690 SM. As mentioned above, with end cans and a remap the Tuono becomes a different bike. Fuelling is perfect and it has plenty of instant grunt, but also revs out well. I recently took out an 08 Superduke for a test ride (courtesy of AMPS). Absolutely loved it. Handling and brakes were sublime (better than the Tuono). Fueling felt perfect to me but it is definitely well down on power and much softer delivery than the Tuono. Having said that, for where I'm at now, it has more than enough power to keep me happy and I am almost certain it will be my next bike.
I think you might be a bit disappointed if you want to use a 990 SM offroad. I think you will find it a bit like my 690 - a great road bike with Motard styling. With the 17 inch wheels at both ends my 690 becomes very nervous on the loose stuff. If you plan to do much of that then the KTM 990 Adventure is a brilliant bike. I chased one all the way around the South Island in 06 on the Tuono. He had adventure tyres on plus hard panniers and top box and there were times when I struggled to keep up. Then he hit some of the high country tracks around Queenstown and it was game over. I headed for the motel and parked up.

Crikey! Sounds like Gremlin is becoming like a Toe-Ranger crew! You should talk to DMNTD, he'd score you a KTM test ride out of nowhere ... after hes gone and thrashed it in for you!

Sounds like a good way to reward yourself on your birthday! Hmmm mine is coming up on the 17th ... :shifty: Mebbe I should .... bad boy!

I really enjoyed a 10-20km stint on gravel on my zx10, with full sport/track tyres. People have also learnt I REALLY like roadworks. It depends what you want from gravel/roadworks I guess :niceone: I don't want the adventure type stuff... but for handling skills, nothing beats controlling a bike on gravel. Best fun I have ever had is having the zx10 slightly sideways at 140kph on a gravel road, rear spinning up. :wari:

Now, back on topic... Boyd (ex honda) know something a bit more about "Sales 101: Turning interest into a sale"... I rang yesterday arvo enquiring, he said he would look into it and let me know and he rang back today, to let me know he could get hold of the 950, and was going to anyway, as he wanted to ride it.

He'll ring me in approximately a weeks time, as that is when it is due to be returned from somewhere else. Apparently KTM NZ brought in limited stock of the 990 supermoto this year, so that it why it is so thin on the ground.

Mate was after a 950SM end of last year, none in the country so AMPS got one in for him from Oz. He's done 8000k's on it so far & loving it. I get to ride it aswell & it's a great machine. Saying that I'd definately like to try the 990SM as I love the way my 05 SD puts it's power down compared to the 950.Bruce @ AMPS should be back next week I think, been on a bussiness trip to the KTM & Triumph Factory's, bastwad, what a shit job

Not a fan of yamahas, but I might take you up on the offer, after all, I never thought I would ever like the cb900, and its quite a hoot to ride (in fact, more enjoyable than the zx10).

I'll give you guys a ring when I have a better idea of when the 950sm is available to ride and when I expect to be down that way.

Just letting people know that this bike is OUTSTANDING and I never had any issues what so ever with it. The ONLY reason why I sold it was due to medical reasons. HIGHLY recomended

That medical reason wouldn't be an addiction to buying motorcycles, would it?

Happy birthday Gremlin! Any joy with KTM yet? I know it's your rant thread, but I had never dealt with AMPS before, and I was treated pretty well. Well, at least I think I was, I hadn't heard about KTM margins at the time.

Anyway, I had brought my bike in for it's first service (3 hours. Barely home and back) and my salesman said that rather than wait around for two hours, why not take the RC8 out for a spin?

Yeah, why not? Funny, it was like the bike KNEW the way to Kaukap!

Anyway, if you haven't sorted your bike out yet, give them another try.

Nope, no response yet... will chase him up in the next couple of days -to be fair to the sales guy that was handling the organisation of the demo, he was only due back at work today (12th) - except work is now getting busy, got a few deadlines on projects to meet etc, 3 weeks ago was sweet, hence the looking at bike.

Glad you had a good experience tho. oh... and I refused point blank to sit on the rc8.... I'm trying to get out of sportsbikes... not blow 30k

Dave Yeah I'd second that about recontacting AMPS & talk to Bruce Saunders.SeppoDave, Bruce is a prick like that.I see it didn't have the Akrapovic fitted when you took it for a ride either. Was speaking to Bruce yesterday & he was asking when I was up that way next, I think he's trying to get me hooked now it's fitted with the new exhaust system :innocent:
