View Full Version : How often do you get stopped by police?

Hi,

My mate drives round on a SV650 on his learners and hes done that for at least 5 months now- he hasn't been stopped and fined.

Thing is, ive got a TZR250 and i have been stopped twice and im on my learners too.

Am i just really unlucky? Or are bikes with fairings stopped more frequently?

How often do you get stopped (with sensible legal driving) ?

I only get pulled over when I do something silly in front of them (and it was silly enough for them to worry about). Once in about the last 5 years. Twice in the last 26 years. Nanas rule!

I used to ride a M50 (800) with a "L" plate and never got pulled over - even when the copper was on a bike behind me on the m/way.

Probably more down to how one rides.

last time I was stopped was 1995, for doing 76 in a 50 zone

the cop proceeded to tell me I was "going like a bat out of hell" followed closely by "just try to keep it under 70"

cuz, y'know, there's a big difference between 76 and 69 :killingme

I only got stopped once at a "mass random check" for WOF and rego on our way to the Cold Kiwi in Ngaruawahia.

I ride a VTR 250 that looks like a bigger bike to the uneducated eye, and am on my learners still :pinch:

You drive tractors don't you?

Yeah, I've never tried the 76 - but I have a feeling I'll prefer the 69 ;)

I have been stopped for a variety of reasons, some reasonable, some less so.

There have been the obvious mass wof and rego checks, mass breath checks , a check to see if I was carrying an escaped prisoner. One check I can recall was not accompanied by any explanation but he seemed to loose interest when he saw the colour of my hair.

I think the most memorable was the occasion where I was stopped in town and asked to remove my helmet, then the silk balaclava, then got "Sorry you aren't who I thought you were." To my knowledge I was the only persion riding a B50SS in town around then so God knows who I was supposed to be.

By the way people, the correct spelling of "ay" or whatever is "eh".
It is only two letters afterall and shouldn't provide an insurmountable challenge. No offence intended :-)

I seem to get stopped on my car like clockwork for random checks.

But in the 2+ years I've had a bike, I've never been pulled over for anything... Strange.....

Mind you my car does have a broken window and dents on every side of the car.

oh... legal riding... ummm... don't think ever? Been stopped 4-5 times I think in 3.5 years, ticket every time. Get waved through every checkpoint, no checking, I normally slow down, lift visor etc, so I guess they expect I'm fine, and can't be bothered.

now... where's Morcs?

The BDOTGNZA are ashamed to read this. :nono: According to the concise english dictionary, the correct spelling of "ay" is "ay", and the correct spelling of "eh" is "eh". Two totally different words with different meanings.

"ay" is an affirmation, and "eh" is a question.

Been stopped out West, at a random checkpoint that was set up outside a school.
Quite sneakily around the corner so that you had to commit to the corner before you saw the checkpoint (surprise, surprise). Had to stand the bike upright and come to a swift halt!

Then the silly question time...
"Have you got a licence"
"Yup!"
"Can I see it?"
"It's in my backpack"
"Oh, OK. Is it a full licence?"
"Yup"
"OK, Off you go then"

All this with full disguise on (tinted visor, etc).

i got stopped 16 times in 2 years on the RG......most were just warnings that i was being a dumbass.

Have never been stopped on the fazer - but i think im a pussy now and dont feel so immortal.

I've only been stopped once in the 3 years of riding and I ride like a bit of a cunt..

The time I got stopped was 100 in a 50 indicating through traffic.. was told to slow down and let off scott free. Counted my lucky stars that day.. I think I'm running out.

checkpointed and stopped once.

vifferman
5th August 2008, 12:21
In 35 years, I've been stopped on the bike only twice where I wasn't ticketed. Once was a driver's licence checkpoint, and the other was when my MT250 had a blown taillight bulb, on account of having no battery (and no battery eliminator fitted). I knew the cop followed me on my backstreet trip, so rode with my foot resting on the brake pedal.
"Your taillight isn't working, but the brake light is."
"Oh... is that right? Huh. I'd better get a bulb tomorrow then."
"OK. Ride carefully."
Times stopped on bike for ticketing: 5. Four times for speeding in a 50km/h area, once for no mirror (just after the rules changed).
Times stopped in car: numerous. No tickets.
Never been pulled up while driving a truck or tractor or bus.

Since getting my learners well over a year ago I have been stopped twice.

1. Coming out the driveway on my GN250, the cop was going down the road as I was about to come out the driveway. He gave me no reason for stopping me, except to say he wanted to check my licence, but when I said I didnt have it on me, he just told me to have a nice day. :sweatdrop

2. Going down the motorway, umm doing about 120kms (Didnt think the bandit could do it). Cop comes up to me and says "Thanks for stopping for me" and I replied "Well why wouldnt I?". Not going to do a runner on my peice of crap bike. Anyway got a fine for 20kms over the speed limit. (although I am on my learners... so isnt it 50kms over the limit?) Anyway he apologised for giving me the ticket and told me to pay it as late as possible to keep the money in the bank.

I doubt this will be the last time I get stopped, but going to make sure I stick to the limits. :pinch:

Not entirely sane behaviour in my books.

Suppose not, you think he should have let me off, I'm no good at trying to talk myself out of things, or trying to sweet talk the cops. I have no gripe I was speeding after all.

Bookings and busts not counting, I've been pulled over for a 'Licence check' on 2 occasions. Breath tested half a dozen times. WOF checked once.

Keep it all in order and it's no stress.

I rode regular old bikes for yonks and never got stopped. Then I bought a Benelli which looked WAYYYYYY different. AT which point I got stopped by every goddam cop in town, mainly coz they wanted to gawk at the unusual beast.....didn't get ticketed, but was once reprimanded for wagging a finger at a copper who passed me on the highway........he assured me that my speedo read way over actual speed........musta been feeling guilty I reckon.......

Cheers for the thread... I just got pulled up shortly after midday... First one like this.

They didn't like my license plate being all dirty (it IS winter y'know). Anyway, I'll have to give it another clean, it was the sole reason they pulled me up too.

At least I can chalk it down to the first time I have ever been pulled up specifically, and not ridden away with a ticket

In nearly 30 years riding about 6 times (excluding wof,reg and breath tests) all for valid reasons. Last time was on a Husaberg 650 wheel standing down Blockhouse bay road late at night coming home from work, Imagine..... pulled of the roundabout pulled it up on the power in 2nd into 3rd, snik 4th, down she comes puff of smoke and a satisfying squeal from the front tyre....slow down feeling pleased with myself and I'm bathed in a flashing blue and red glow!!!! I have been pulled over twice as much on the Ducati than on the BMW. Last time I was stopped on the Ducati I was cruising along at the speed limit and a cop was going the other way. I thought nothing of it and carried on only to discover flashing lights behind me at the end of a 3km straight. I asked why'd you pull me over? Was told Oh it's just a license and rego check and then asked lots of questions including "where do you work?" What's that got to do with anything officer? Oh nothing, don't worry about it..... Satisfied them after 5 mins on the side of the road then had to speed up a bit after that to get home in time to pick up the kids from school. I haven't had a ticket on the ducati but have had a fine on the BMW.:shifty:

Soooo... I think that sports bikes get more attention from Mr Plod for sure.....

Yeah i don't know how my mate gets away with it- hes having loads of fun on that SV650, no L plates either.

IMHO what you wear and what you ride makes a difference.

Joe Average biker in a Gortex jacket or similar on a Boulevard probably won't get hassled. On a big inch sportsbike, with racy leathers etc, you're a target and just as much so if you wear dark sunnies, a black leather jacket and an open face on a Harley.

"Just a routine check" is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever heard, it's always a fishing trip. However, it's satisfying to be legal and all 'papered-up' when some spotty-faced hero-wannabe hassles you. Funny-as when they don't even know what it is they're looking at. That's when the sport begins. Older, more experienced cops tend to give up when they find nothing to fine you for, they are less likely to be trying to prove something.

You'll do more k's per "routine inspection" out of the big cities and you'll do them faster, generally speaking. Radar detectors are the best investment ever. Far better than Hanover etc......

I got stopped all the friggin' time in Auckland and thereabouts for "routine checks". Glad to be out of the shithole.

!^%km/h over the tairua bridge on a coro loop......stationary radar facing the other way - not stopped! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIC3cP1sBXc

!*)km/h south of kopu towards paeroa - don't even know if they turned around......

No times in 15 yrs, then once in the last 6 months for speeding on the open road(Monday afternoon, no one there, wide open 3 lanes) outside of Rotten Rua.Was going to get away from the stench!
Poor old Mr Plod was happy I stopped for him, still gave me the ticket for 120K's,I argued that shes an old bike and my speedo said 112 but he wouldnt budge, was a time, that this was a stern talking too on the side of the open road, no one about and see you later.

So.... Just out of curiousity, can you get the 400 hundy for not abiding by the conditions of licence and the $xxx for exceeding speed limit by 20 km/h, or is it 400 hundy for the licence and $xxx+ for exceeding speed limit by 50 km/h???, or alternatively, just the 400 hundy for not abiding by the licence conditions and no further repercussions (would prefer the legal, asshole cop and nice cop answers) cheers

Firstly the 70kph restriction is a loud of bollocks. I don't see what could possibly be considered safe about a learner bike rider being restricted to 70kph while on 100kph roads and having cattle trucks and all manner of other traffic tailgating them because they are legally stuck at that speed.

However, if you get nabbed for exceeding the 70kph restriction the correct fine is for breaching the condition of your licence, $400. If you get issued a ticket for exceeding the speed limit in these circumstances but your actual speed was less than the posted speed limit then I would defend it. If you got caught doing in excess of 100km/h you would then be liable for both the licence breach (+70kph - $400) and for exceeding the posted speed limit (100kph - $$$ depending on how far over you are).

I can only give my data-points in relation to cages, because, well, I haven't got on the road with a bike, yet, but ...

I have been pulled over precisely twice

first was well after hours on a restricted license, although a cop never checked. He'd seen me pull out of a petrol station, without my lights on ( after dark) , and followed me down the road a little. No ticket but a "please check that your lights are on in future"

second was after doing a U turn at traffic lights ( without no u - turn signs up ), to get to a petrol station. Cop followed me into the petrol station and indicated a come here to me. He told me that I wasn't allowed to do a u-turn at traffic lights, and that this was in the road code and was saying he'd send me an infringement in the mail.

The infringement notice never turned up, and I did look though the road code, and didn't find it, so, I'm of the option that that cop, was just being a dick that day. oh well.

I just hope that the rest of his life got better from there :innocent:

Legal:

$400 for exceeding 70kmph on a learners licence. Speed limit is still 100kmph so doing 120kmph is a speeding ticket for 20kpmh over the limit. You will not be ticketed for 50kmph over the 70kmph learner restriction...

Nice cop:

Up to the cop on if he gave you both, or one, or told you off.

Which one are you?

"Last time I warned ya" indeed....That would have been donkey's years ago, for sure; warnings are practically a thing of the past. In fact, the last time I recieved any leniency from a copper I WAS on a learners (on a 1340, bahaha) and he let it slide. I took his advice, rode home and left it there for a couple of weeks until the time came for me to get my full. (OK, it took 28 years but I did get one.) He was the last half decent cop I met, about 2002.

The rest have been .... (see above quote, second paragraph.)

I've stated elsewhere on this site that riding a Harley in a leather jacket with dark sunnies and an open face MAKES A DIFFERENCE! You are targetted by the revenue gatherers who think (and it cannot be denied) "oh there must be a few dollars to be earned with this character" and they sometimes get annoyed and even confrontational, when there isn't. It's called 'pushing buttons'.

I'm not ALWAYS on the recieving end and it's interesting to watch it go down when others are being hassled. You sit there thinking "oh for a video camera" coz nobody will believe you if you don't have it on film. Least of all a court or the PCA.

As for 'nice cop', which beat is he/she on? (Derek Erasmus' patch perhaps?)

Oh I normally do a truckload of k's, rarely get stopped in the car, last ticket I got in the car was on a downhill run on the North Shore, no major. Just ran over the limit a bit, tough. However, trying to even get OUT of Auckland (on the bike) often was cause for drama.

S'funny; toured the mainland three times now and NOT ONE ticket, ever, bike or car. Plus we've been on a few excursions since we moved south. There are less cops per k; a simple numbers game.

Keep it all in order and it's no stress.

Only if they do too.
If the cop is a wanker and it's inevitable that I'm gonna get a ticket I go out of my way to piss them off and with luck, make them angry all day.

Last time that happened a cop pulled me for 68 in a 50. I was dead to rights and happy to pay the bill.
The cop was a tosser though and got smart.

Eventually he asked me if I kept an eye on my speedo and I said
"not enough to avoid the fuzz obviously but looking at the speedo takes your eye off the road and it's fukkin dangerous to do it too often."

That got him more obnoxious and the young punk started questioning my 30+ years riding skills. I said "Mate, do ya know how quickly one of these 1300cc bikes accelerates? You can go from 50 to 70 in the blink of an eye. Do you even HAVE a bike licence?"

"Yes" he said

"I bet it's a learners ya young punk" says I and his mate starts giggling and trying to stifle it in the background.

"Yes, it is" he says, "but bla bla bla bla etc"

I just laughed and wound him up more and more as his cop mate cracked up in the background.
I got my ticket in the end, he left fuming and red faced and I laughed and laughed all day.

A stupid young punk is still a stupid young punk uniform or no

In NZ stopped and ticketed on average, once a year - usually 118-130k - the same basic cruise speed I've done on the highways for over 30 years. Seldom got pulled over in days of yore, but, since about '99 - 2000, noticed it was getting harder and harder to avoid it. And the cops seem young and more arrogant - I get pissed off being lectured about how dangerous exceeding 100k on the road is, by a young punk who rides a trail bike!

In WA, in 2 yrs, out of the city I've seen 2 cops on the road and been pulled over for a roadside breath/license check in the local village, once. Still cruise at the same speed.

Never been pulled over. Stopped at checkpoints for WOF/rego but never singled out for "individual attention". Even the muftis i've passed when, um, not sticking to the speed limit must consider me too boring or insignificant to show any interest in. Happy to keep it that way!

It's because they have a quota! Oops, sorry, 'performance expectation'. And yes, the younger ones are a problem, it's far easier to deal with, talk to and accept a ticket from someone who doesn't have an 'attitude'.

Cops talk about passing their 'attitude test' but I have one for THEM to pass also. No pass means no manners from me. I treat people the way they treat me and I speak when I'm spoken to at the roadside, so it's their 'first contact'. If it's a baddie they get an earful.

When I ride I wear Cordura jacket ,Draggens, black fullface helmet and boots and never been stopped in that attire. The first time I went for a late afternoon ride wearing Draggens, black leather jacket and black shorty helmet shades and facewarmer,I got stopped. Doing 50k in no traffic he passed me in the opposite direction then turned to follow me. After aprox .5 km I turned a right at some lights and next thing the blue and reds were on so I just pulled over. I dismounted and removed my helmet and shades and was greeted with are you xxx and asked my address.
With my unmasked appearence he said ok just a routine check enjoy your ride.

Firstly the 70kph restriction is a loud of bollocks. I don't see what could possibly be considered safe about a learner bike rider being restricted to 70kph while on 100kph roads and having cattle trucks and all manner of other traffic tailgating them because they are legally stuck at that speed.

You're right. The law should be that learners shouldn't go on roads posted greater than 70kph as they are obviously too stupid to know that 70 on a 100k road is dangerous.

Feels like tempting fate to post in here. Have been pulled over twice on the bike. Was being a bit naughty the first time but talked my way out of it as I was a learner at the time and the throttle was sticking  after helping me to look the bike over a bit we couldn't find anything obvious that was causing the problem and he just told me to take it easy and be careful. Thankyou officer...

The second time I was splitting on the motorway in stopped still rush hour traffic. Used to commute from UHutt to Wellington everyday and this particular day I was running a tad late and had the little RG150 going along quite nicely...little bit of middle splitting little bit of breakdown lane all going nicely....so nicely that I didn't notice the cop bike as I carved him up  and didn't also see that he had tried to 'catch' me. Sadly for me he called ahead and a car copper pulled me over and made me wait for him to catch me up...took blardy forever too I might say

Before ticketing me for 'riding in a lane unavailable' he commended me rather enthusiastically on my control and confidence on the bike and said that he had tried to follow me (from Lower Hutt lights) but just couldn't keep up (to which I thought well there's a good reason why I don't commute on an ST1100 mate!) he said he knew he was going to catch me anyway by calling ahead to his mates in the cars they had posted on the overpass before Aotea off ramp...DAMMIT! Could've done without that delay  naughty girl  SO Welly bikers! Be aware (if you haven't already seen them do it) that in summer they load up the overpass with car and bike coppers to get us all.

stopped twice for booze checkpoints, 1st time i didn't have my learners yet, the british cop took my details and went off to write the ticket without hearing a story. He said sorry for the ticket once he heard my story, got my learners 3 days later SIGH! $400 bucks for a lesson that worked for 3 days!

2nd time the chick-cop just smiled and said "this is a breath test to test for alcohol, state your name" and then "thats fine ride on"

in retrospect it would have been cooler if she said rock on but what can i do.

You HAVE to be way over 30 then.........

For the most part, with age comes experience but (because of all down sides to being a copper) many of those with experience find another way to earn a living. (A bit of a generalisation...) We often get stuck with ten cent, spotty wannabe heroes on the frontline and when you get to MY age the last thing you're gonna tolerate is some glaring advertisement for Clearasil handing out a lecture.

Mind you, as I've gathered a few years I'm less inclined to retaliate physically and IF there's a problem I'll use the so-called 'proper' channels. The less said and done in anger on the side of the road the better, especially if there are witnesses.

$400 and 25 demerits like what has been said. I got done for that once before i got my exemption, i was stupid enough to keep riding and got pulled up again before i had my exemption but he let me off that time, then i got PULLED UP AGAIN with out my exemption and this cop wrote me another ticket but stated on it that if i get my exemption in 28 days i can get the ticket wiped.
