View Full Version : The're FOG lights not F%#@ing driving lights

Heres my bitch.
What has happened to New Zealand drivers over the last few years, that has made them think, that fog lights are driving lights? It's a pain in the ass when your following them, as you can't tell the difference between their break lights being on or off. Especially in with rain on your visor!
Is it yet again a case of people who travel on four wheels only, having a frontal lobotomy at birth, or is it that they have all just discovered another button to push? :bash:

Sorry I'm dumb, aren't the fog lights on the front?
James Deuce

No mate, they don't know the difference, they aren't aware of their legal obligation in regard to driving with foglights on either. I'd bet that people don't even realise that they have a rear foglight and advance the switch all the way around to turn on the "front driving lights". Which are actually foglights themselves.
Most people on KB are completely convinced that it's OK to use foglights as driving lights btw, despite them being a uni-directional source of light and not a directed beam.

They have a very bright tailight so you can see them when stopped in the fog.
I agree Adulf, the only place in Wellington that gets fog is the airport and you don't drive there. Ok if you live in the Waikato.
As I understand it there is a law about using driving lights (additional to headlights) during the day, surely this would apply to fog lights in the clear?
Edit: ^^^ What "The Deuce" said.
Bloody dangerous as it's difficult to tell when the cars brakes are being applied.

Bing! I owe you another beer.
We get fog where I live and the occasional pea souper on the Hutt floor, so don't be too keen to dismiss fog as fictional. Plus Wainuiomata was ensconced under a giant fogbank this morning.

I've had to use em atop Mount Maungaraki from time to time, but that low cloud.

The rear fog light is one of the dumb "features" on my Avensis.
It's a single light on one side, and it means I've only got one reversing light (on the other side).
Times I was not hit from behind because of it? = 0
Times I wished I had TWO reversing lights? > 50

saw a 1980's s/w similar to the mkIV cortina traveling north by Mt. Wgtn last weeknd. The knob-end had fitted a square aftermarket (red lense, similar to a hella driving lamp) light below his rear bumper facing upwards. Light misty rain, no need for lights at all. U could see this thing a fuckin km away.
ah, mist, fog, low cloud - same thing 'tis all water vapour

the road code clearly states that you must not use foglights at any time where there is no fog as they "may dazzle other drivers".
full theory and practical driving tests should be compulsory every five-ten years in order to retain your licence <_<
experience doesn't count for shit if you're misinformed/a dumbarse.

The Danish word for fog is rather similar to that for fool - as such they are generally known as fool-lights when used at inappropriate times. I guess fogwit-lights would do here...
Distinguishing between braking lights and the fog light isn't the annoying bit for me - but if you're stuck behind fog lights they add significantly to eye fatigue due to their brightness.
But yes, there seems to be quite a few people out there who haven't picked up on the fact that cars come with a set of lights designed specifically for driving on the public road - and that fog lights (front and rear) are meant to be used in fog. You also see quite a lot of folks running around with their parking lights on during dusk

This is similar to twats that insist on driving in poor visibility with only their park lights on. Unfortunately there are far too many drivers on the road without an ounce of situational awareness

When I moved to NZ I couldn't believe the madness on the roads here.
Then I spend five weeks in Bangkok, since then I reckon kiwis are heroes on the road. They even drive in the right direction on the motorway and roundabouts!
It seems to me traffic and driving goes hand in hand with culture and social attitude of a community, in general.
In many places around Europe it's law to drive with your lights on 24/7. You can't even switch them off. I agree this is much more safer.
Fog lights are evil and bad 99% of the time.

Yeah, I commute through the mistthat develops from the Hutt River frequently on winter days, yes there is a time and place. Should get some (fog lights) for #1's SV.
Plus Wainuiomata was ensconced under a giant fogbank this morning.
If only the residents were to scared to drive through it:whistle:

Sorry I thought that had been replaced by the sit in the right hand lane below the speed limit(with fog lights on- staying on topic here) and brake check anyone flashing their lights in a vain effort to overtake legally.
Did I get that one wrong then?

They are quite "situationally aware"!
They know that they are sitting in their vehicle.
They know that they HAVE to be in the right hand lane.
They know that their coffee is getting colder all the time they are sitting in the traffic.
They know that their makeup isn't right, so must be touched up while using that handy-dandy mirror on the windscreen. It was put there for that sole, specific purpose and no other.
Completely aware! of things inside the cage...

Disagree. The police even recommend that motorbikes travel with their lights on all the time. Why is that? Because it STANDS OUT. If everybody travels with their lights on, we don't stand out any more. (Just like typing a couple of words in caps stands out more than a whole post of caps).
Same thing as hazard vests on building sites. Stupid OSH and what not, they are beginning to lose their effect, as everyone uses them, and people are getting used to seeing them.

Most people drive with there lights on once the rain starts which means there tail lights are on.
yah cant have head lights on with out tail lights as well.
For that matter a lot of bike are just as bad to see as the tail light is so dam small you cant tell what the hell is going on at all.

Most people that have fitted A/M fog lights to their cage have them wired up to their fog light switch... however as they use them all the time to look 'cool' they do not usually realize that they have rear fog lights also...
I have driving lights fitted to my cage, and spent a long time making sure they only come on when I use high beam... 150w of light is enough to turn a dark country road into daylight. :Punk:

Newlands gets the fog pretty thick at times, remember couple times almost hitting a couple dumbfuk neighbours who insisted on driving their white vehicles without lights on in those conditions. Bit hard to miss a 4WD with proper fog lights on in the fog.

Yer, I'm not talking about head lights and tail lights. I'm talking about FOG lights. If your fog lights are coming on when you turn your wipers, something is wired wrong in your car: as pointed out earlier on in the tread regarding what the law states. What happens when you turn on the stereo.......dose the boot open? :Pokey:
