What is there not to like.... The group of people you meet and the fact that most wave and stop to help if your stuck on the side of the road. But especially the freedom and the feeling when every thing is going right.

Why do I ride?
Same reason I drive a car - cos it's bloody boring just looking at the thing, and both vehicles are bloody hard to push.
Insanity_rules
5th August 2008, 21:10
I ride cause golf is for fags and its difficult to pull wheelies in my car. Not to mention the funny looks I get driving along the motorway wearing a helmet.
Seriously my commute is 35 minutes on the bike and an hour and a bit in the cage City to Upper Hutt. Also its funnier to ride through a camp ground naked than to run.

I ride because I like the individual freedom of a bike and hate having to travel in a cage. :ride:
and it's faster and sometimes I like to show off and it's what I like to do most! :shifty:
My bike is my first choice of transport every time but I don't always get my own way, damn it. John.
PS: Today I cleaned my bike.

Because I enjoy the freedom and the feeling of being alive and aware of every nuance around me as I zip along. Not like being in a car where you feel trapped and separated from your surroundings.

Id like to tick "Because I'm not a cage driving chicken shit like my parents" but only the first bit applies. My father is no chicken shit and rode himself for years in his youth and again after I started rideing until his leg was nearly demolished by an errant car at an intersection.
I ride because, now that I'm back on after 13years with no bike, I can't imagine ever being without one again. It's just part of who I am. So much so that now that the car has finally gotten to old to be worth fixing it's out the door with no plans to replace it. It's bikes all the way now for my wife and I!
And as soon as she finishes her PhD and gets a paying job a new bike is at the top of my shopping list.

My decision to start riding was through the cost of petrol , so it was the commute option for me.
However since I started riding, I have come to enjoy it more and more :2thumbsup , and would even go on a social ride if time allowed and I could keep up :(

I learnt from my dad. He rode into his 80's and I plan on doing the same, if not longer.

Go on the social rides anyways. They can be a lot of fun. I am always at the back, by choice and because most other riders seem to be faster. I have been riding for 40 years... "Ride your ride" is the motto I have had for many, many years.

I love getting out and about and seeing New Zealand... But I get car sick and I HATE being stuck behind other cars... So bikes kick ass :2thumbsup
The hum/roar/scream of the engine, leaning into the corners, twisting the throttle and giggling my head off like a crazy person, Feelin the wind rushin past ya... Why DON'T people ride?
Oh also I just love turning up to random places and taking my helmet off and watching different peoples reactions when they realize I'm a chick  Priceless

Rather a silly question , isn't it?
In mediaeval times, walking everywhere might have been OK (or horseback if you were rich). But modern society is more widespread , and fast paced than the Middle Ages. So we all need to get quikly and safely from A to rather distant B.
And even if horseback was up to it (which it isn't) the Greenies would have it banned cos the horses would poop everywhere.
So, I ride because my feet would get sore WAY before I reached my destination if I walked. Walking's out, horse is out, boat or swimming is impractical, don't have a pilots licence, hot air ballons are impractical, has to be the bike , doesn't it, no other option.

There is a theory that states that modern society is more widespread BECAUSE of the invention of faster transport.
When everybody walked from A to B one guy wants to see the world a bit faster and tames a horse, another guy that wouldn't have bothered otherwise looks at the first and says "what a great idea" and pretty soon every one who's anybody rides a horse.
And so it goes for each increment of the speed of travel...
Because you can go further faster you start going further than you really need to.

Beethoven’s ninth symphony is often referred to as the ‘Ode to Joy’.
The ode was written in 1875 by German poet Friedrich Schiller and the words were widely popularised when it was included as a part for four vocalists in the Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
It was subsequently condensed and re-written as a popular Hymn that has little resemblance to the original text - except for the unmistakable tune.
Like the Ode, this page has had a few significant changes to the wording, but it’s still sung to the same melody.
The Ed asked me to step into the esteemed Last Word chair and pen some thoughts pertinent to the above pic of Stretch and I.
The brief suggested we note how we have changed since we’ve been involved with the magazine.
My first thoughts were that I should make an ‘Ode style’ call for a bit more ‘love and understanding’ between sections of the motorcycle fraternity and how riding all the different bikes had changed my perspectives.
I wanted to sprout off about not dissing scooter riders or tarring Harley riders all with the same brush because they ‘don’t wave’.
I had thoughts of addressing the issues of lost camaraderie.
Then a note from a wise friend changed my focus.
The ‘Joy’ part is what we should concentrate on.
Do you remember the joy of your first motorcycle? Your first ride? The exhilaration of (in my case) three horsepower? The first wind in your face and the exultations of surviving the first corner you entered too hot? The thrill of those first big G forces.
Joy. That’s why we ride.
For some it’s hidden by a veneer of practicality and commuter sensibility while other’s Id may be a Stoner, Rossi or BT fantasy that has them emulating a hero.
Underneath it all is the remnant of that first thrill and the joy of the ride.
It all starts with that release of endorphins when you brain says ‘this is cool sh*t!’ and boy, doesn’t zooming on a fine bike release them!
When we’re off the bike and addressing the issues that confront us as motorcyclists, bad drivers, crappy conditions, unfair taxes - even the inclement weather , it makes you wonder why any of us would ride.
Underneath it all is joy. (Insert Benny Hill Pun here).
At age eight I had a Deckson 125. It had 8” wheels, centrifugal clutch and a 4-stroke lawn mower engine. (I was sophisticated back then too – no 2-stroke Victa engines for Davey-boy).
My Grandfather bought me mini bikes much to my mother’s chagrin and I was as proud of them then as I am of my motorcycles today.
When I was eight ‘Lunz’ was my hero.
He was 6’7”, an athlete, rode an 850 Commando and was a mate of my next door neighbour’s older brother.
I used to park my mini-bike on the grass and sit and look at his magnificent Norton out front.
One day he came out and asked ‘Your bike has no speedo – how do you know how fast you are going?’
I shrugged.
‘Well I’ll tell you what. You ride up Boronia Street here and I’ll ride beside you and tell you how fast you are going.’
So eight year old David on an unregistered mini bike, flat wrung out up Boronia St, and Hulk Hogan yelling 40, 45, 45mph at him from an Black and Gold Interstate, and laughing his head off.
40 years later that stamp-your-feet-giggling-like-a-kid joy is with me every time I recall that day.
Now if I see a kid on a mini bike I talk to him about it - and note if it has a speedo.
Working with Stretch and KR brings me close to some of that Joy too. To watch the maestro do his thing on hundreds of kgs of heavy metal makes me giggle inside just as much.
So ponder it dear reader - there are whole lot of reasons why we ride. Then and focus on the fact that in this madcap world we ride in - it’s mostly owed to joy.

Someone on here once said riding was like 2 dimensional flying...that's it in a nutshell for me.
The accelleration, speed, being in the open air are all major drawcards!!!
Oh wait - I ride a Ducati. OK I'm in it for the cappucino!!!

For those who have discovered the freedom and enjoyment of two wheels powered by petrol... what other form of transport is there?
