Sitting licences on a 125cc scooter?

Hi,

I have just got a Suzuki UZ125 scooter which by all accounts is awesome to ride. I have no bike licence at all. I have to sit a basic handling test to get my learners which I can do on the 125cc scooter. I have checked this with a local tester.

Does anyone know if I can do the restricted and full class 6 on the same bike or do I need a proper bike with gears etc. One guy I spoke to said I could use a scooter and another has said you need an actual road bike. The website for LTSA states it cannot be sat on a MOPED which I thought was below 50cc.

I recently did my 6R on mt Vespa GT200 and I'll be doing my 6F on it too. I will then be road legal on a Hayabusa. Daft but true.

Yep, as long as the scooter can do safe speed on faster speed road it should be fine as the test will include a ride in the high speed section.

I recently did my full test on a 150cc TGB scooter and it was fine. As long as it's registered as a motorcycle (which it has to be unless it's less than 50cc and falls under moped) there is legally nothing different between a scooter and a motorcycle.

Yep.. your scooter is fine for a motorcycle test. In fact you can do it on a 50cc bike if you want, as long as it has motorcycle rego, not moped rego.

The law can be a bit daft in this regard. I had a camper van, legal to drive on a car licence as it weighed 3000kg - less than 3500kg tare.

They changed the law, suddenly my 3000kg camper needed a class 2 licence, as the new law changed it to 4500kg, GVM. GVM is the maximum weight the vehicle manufacturer say it can weigh fully laden.

But the guys who had built my camper had rated it 8000kg GVM.

What to do ?

LTSA (After taking money of course) gave me an exemption to drive my camper on my car licence.

Then, I decided to get my class 2 licence, in my camper. But you guessed it, the tester said "Nah, can't test you in that - it doesn't weigh 4500kg". This pissed me off immensely, as I had already paid for the test, and the tester refused to refund my money, as he claimed I had to give 24 hours cancellation notice !

So we had the crazy situation where I needed a class 2 licence to drive the camper, but couldn't use the camper for the test.

Then LTSA F'd up. My class 2 licence arrived in the mail, even though I had never sat the test !

To cut a long story sideways, they eventually let me sit my test, free, in my camper.

We've just had cause to check this very issue. We are told that to sit your full, your 2 wheeled conveyance must be registered as a motorcycle, must be in legal condition, and must be capable of 100kph. Size, type, geared or not - doesn't matter.
