Hey, I own a Hyosung GT250R and am keen to start track racing. Is there a class that you know of to race my bike? If not, where is the best place to start? What bike would I need? I have heard a little about rg150's and other small two strokes.
Also, I am emailing the Victoria Motorcycle Club at the moment, but replies are slow so I thought I would ask here.
Any information would be appreciated! I am very keen to get on the track and have a crack at racing! Cheers

Go for gold mate,
The Hyosung will be more compeditive than what a lot of people will say.
It's cheap and fun racing too!

Awesome! Thanks guys! I will get into streetstock asap. I will give it a go, and if I am sick of getting thrashed by screamin' demons (150 2 strokes), then I might have to invest in one! Haha. Thanks again!
If there is anything else anyone recommends or any other advice, please let me know.

I have only just gone faster around manfield on my rg than I could on my GSX250, which is very similar to a hyosuyng.
I'm from Upper Hutt and also race in streetstock so give me a yell if you need anything, I am able to help with advice or whatever.

Ruapuna is a bit further away than Manfeild, but we have regurlarly seen young North Island riders commute down for our Streetstock class.
For the young ones Motorcycling Canterbury offers cheap membership, cheap entry, access to 3 club RG 150's, and training at each meeting. For someone starting out they get 1 on 1 support, on and off track for their first meeting.
Most meetings have a training class, (3 sessions), so, with the Streetstock races as well a new rider can often ride 7 times in a day. Safety, fun and rider development are the priorities.
See the South Island calendar (on this forum) and don't hesitate to PM me with any enquiries

Hey man! That is awesome! I have ridden a GSX250 and it was similar to the Hyosung. Do you have any contacts or anything to get me going as soon as possible? I would like to be able to race my Hyosung as I can't really afford a new bike (e.g. an rg150) but if I have to buy a different bike for racing, I will do it! I live in Silverstream so I am a 2 minute ride from anywhere in the Upper Hutt area. Cheers!

Hey mate! That sounds awesome! Do you know if that sort of thing is offered up here in Wellington? I would like to get really in to racing and definately come down to Ruapuna at some stage! You guys sound like you have a great deal for learner racers and a great atmosphere. Cheers!

Hey mate, good to see another biker entering the Streetstock 250s, competitions always good. I 'raced' a Hyosung GT250 (the unfaired non adjustable bastard) for Unbelievable Times (bit of a promo run for his company).
Atleast I think the GT250R has adjustments for preload on the suspension etc From memory the GT250R is Oil Cooled, so you shouldn't have to worry about the coolant side of things.
http://www.vicclub.co.nz/tiki-read_article.php?articleId=68 has most of the information you need to get into racing in Streetstock including how to prep your bike properly.
I'd love to help more but don't have the time on my hands to do so :)
See you out there soon!

Not really like they do down south but If you make yourself known around the pit at manfeild the locals will look after you.
I do reccomend getting as many trackdays in as possible because track time is VERY valuable to racing development.
Getting going is easy as you will read on the vic club site, If you want a yarn in person and/or a bit of help and advice in prepping the bike I am happy to help. Im no guru but I can help enough to get ya started.

If you can't afford an RG, can you afford to crash your GT250R?

Some people do race their road bike....BUT (a big but too)...no insurance when racing and what do you do for transport if that's it?
Much better to get a cheap race dedicated POS.

That's what I was wondering...
Racing is a lot of fun but it can be expensive, esp if you're a crasher  speaking from experience lol!
Would be interesting to see how the Hyo goes compared to the RG's. Get as many spare levers as you can and a couple of spare gear rods never go a mis either
All the best and try keep it shiny side up :2thumbsup

Cool thanks guys. Yeah I was chatting to Dad tonight and I think I will invest in a beat up rg150. Something that will run (not run awesome, can't afford that! Haha) and that I would have no problem thrashing and crashing if it came to that. Where is the best place to start for a beat up rg150? I can do some mechanical stuff if need be.

The rgv is aircooled and not really competitive with the rg watercooled...but it's close to you and a cheap entry to racing for a beginner

How can a single cylinder be a 'V' ? Or do I need to brush up on my bike specs ?
Looks like the latter :(

One of my mates owns an rg150 and another owns an rgv150. I have ridden both and the rg150 leaves the rgv150 for dead! Is it worth starting on an rgv150 though to save $$? Don't they handle poopy compared to the rg150?

7th August 2008, 13:35
You are right. At the end of the day, you want to get on the track and racing. And you don't have a lot of moolah? There are always options, I merely pointed out one (that is not worth pursuing if you are serious). Even RG150s can be costly to race. But cheap compared to the bigger bikes/classes.

7th August 2008, 14:34
Yeah I could imagine! But if I do well on the track/have heaps of fun then the $$ will be well worth it! Thanks for your advice!

No one can afford to crash there bike! If ya got a bike ride it rather then waste money on some other piece that still gonna cost ya to fix. What damage you gonna do anyways scratch some fairings just put some glass on if thats the case or just remember its a street bike and ride at 95% you should never crash
Sweet if you can race streetstock! otherwise clubmen i guess, best advice i could give ya is get a decent set of s/h race tyres cost ya fa

Cool thanks for all the advice guys. I am going to go look at an rg150 in town soon hopefully! Got to wait for the guy to email me back. You know what, I now know what overdrafts are for! Motorbikes! I got my first bike using a bit of my overdraft. Didn't regret it for even a second.
My question now is, I can buy a one piece racing suit off trademe pretty cheap but is it gay to wear a one piece for racing? Hahaha. It is cheaper to get a one peice at the moment and they protect better apparently, but I don't want to look like an absolute tool when I turn up for my first day out racing on track. I am sure you can all tell by now that money is tight, but I really have to give racing a go.

One piece is the preferred option for racing (no possibility of the jacket riding up and exposing skin). Or 2 piece that zips together right round.

I would like to suggest to you that you come along to a race meeting or two just to see what is happening there. I say that because if you think you may look a bit gay wearing one piece leathers then i would assume you have never been and seen that the only real choice is just that. Looking like a tool is never a part of the scene and safety is the only golden rule.
Before you get into buying a bike and leathers and back protector and good gloves and good boots and good tyres and good helmet a trailer / van for transport ,
yer its heaps aye ..... here is an idea, the Vic Club is always asking for assistants at the meetings at the cutting edge of the action and you will get an insight to what happens and be around all the rite people to ask all the rite questions and then decide if its what you want to do.
Contact the committe for details. You get a freee lunch too.
I only offer this advice out of concern about your knowlege of what really is involved in the sport , it can consume you to the point you do nothing else but it can turn around and bite your ass just as easily.
August 23rd is the next round at Manfeild so come along and see for yourself and if you cant get there yourself then ask here ( in the forums ) and someone will give you a lift to the track im sure . Good luck and take your time deciding.
Cheers Paul.

Cool cheers mate! Yeah I was worried that I would turn up as a newbie to the sport in the only one piece or something. Ok I will buy one I think!
Yeah I am definately keen to go to meetings and track events to watch, unfortunately I can't go up to Manfield on the 23 because I fly out at 5pm to go skiing down south. Transport to the races is never an issue for me, I ride everywhere! But it is awesome to know that there are a lot of good guys in the track racing sport that would help out someone like me!
I have a van with a trailor at home and all I really need now is the bike, suit, club membership at vic, and a racing licence!
Cheers!
