With the constant paranoia of bike theft looming over our heads, I was just wondering if members could suggest ways of securing our beloved dirt bikes against theft while they are in the shed....
What method do you prefer???

I use ground anchors, big chains, curtains, alarm, huge dog and NEVER clean or work on them within view of passersby. It doesn't hurt to check if you're being followed home from a ride either............Get to know your neighbours, they are your best line of defence..... Paranoid? Me? never...... (I'll be back in a moment, just checking they're still there......) Puff puff.. I'm back and can report everything is still secure, fortunately the 'Hound of the Baskervilles' recognised me....

Insure it for twice its value - then when it's pinched you can get TWO!

Ha! Im of the same mindset .... just wondering how effective those disc brake locks may be over the traditional chain n padlock... a bit more difficult to cut off without wrecking the disc perhaps...
All in all a bad ass combination of all of the above wouldnt hurt though. My recently acquired dogs still a puppy though and chews the freakin knobs of me tyres ... I may coat them in vinegar n pepper or something ...

All bikes have disk locks and chains chaining them to each other ... in a secure garage .... however the real protection is good insurance

Have the dirtbike through star, roadbike through our general insurer. Annoys me that our normal insurer won't touch the off road stuff.

About $325 p/a ..... peace of mind I guess. Got a friendly reminder a couple of month's back when some scum hitched a friends trailer up to the friends car and loaded his bike onto it ... all gone in no time flat ..... gutting :argh:

I put a disc lock on my Street bike then chain everything together including beach buggy and spare wheels + alarm cable. I have an alarm on my van and air horns rigged to the lid of my enclosed trailer.
Additional tips (some good ones in the previous posts):
Don’t leave a grinder where scum can find and use it on your anti theft measures.
A “baby monitor” (Dick Smith, Jaycar, Harvey Norman) can be left in the garage with the receiver near you. This can warn you that your “babies” are being disturbed, especially if you use in conjunction with an alarm cable or “scum rattles” on the doors/chains/bikes. I suggest disturbances are investigated while carrying a 12 gauge.:gob:

a big dog trumps any alarm system
insurance is good, but getting the new one and setting it up right is a bit of a pain
I want to get a gps tracking device if my road bike is ever nicked though. give KB a call and go round and "liberate" the bastard's property. if he want's to call the cops then good on him, even if they care they'll be asking why he had my bike to begin with;)

Hope your bike is recovered there mate!!
Possibly a master power switch located somewhere in the garage (hidden) which turns off the mains to the shed when you are not there could be handy. This would stop any potential theives plugging in grinders etc to cut through chains and locks etc?
The beer fridge may have to suffer though:bye:

Its not me... but try this. you put whakking great bars on all the windows except the small louvered one at the back of the shed. Then you put a light mesh on insulated standoffs just inside the louvers. The bastards will grab it when they realise that this is the way in! just wrap the bared end of an old extension lead around the mesh and you are ready to BBQ!:innocent:

Disc locks do fuck all. I found out the hard way when my motard was taken from outside my workplace in broad daylight.<_<
Use everything you can to make it hard for the cunts.

I prefer Winchester pump-action with solids (None of this pissy shot that stings ya bum)

haha I use buck shot which is pretty effective on the possums but the neighbors can get a tad twitchy with the big BOOM in the middle of the night. big Rotti, 3 million candle power torch and 30/30 lever action are great for night time investigations in case anyone is feeling lucky :ar15:

Hey climintie, where did you get your ground anchors from? or did you make yours?

17th August 2008, 15:38
Made mine. I use a pipe with a round bar inside, so a hacksaw can't cut through, big dynabolts and welded plates over the nuts...Would take a bit of effort with a disc grinder to get through, I have an isolation switch for the garage so they'll have to bring their own generator. Hopefully it's easier to steal from down the road somewhere..... Like the old bear story, don't have to outrun the bear, just don't be the slowest member of the group....:bye:
