NZ to Aussie bike license...

Well... Had a call from the recruitment guy today and it looks as tho il be moving to Aus in the next 2-3 months. I have had my learners since I was 15 (yeah yeah..:dodge:) and was wondering how this will cross over in the land of the rising roo...

Anyone know?

Going to go back to materials handling.. sorting and selling conveyor systems to mines etc. Hard to refuse.. their starting rate is twice what Im earning here.. Il come back as soon as Im debt free with enough cash to buy my bike... As for the L plate.. I wear it on the inside. :wacko:

They have some restriction (i am not 100% sure) where the learners only lasts 2 years or something... don't know entirely but i reckon it would be a good idea to get your restricted bike here first then transfer it.

In most states in aussie you can use your NZ licence for 6 months before you have to transfer it.

Re license. Make sure your learners is still current. Head to Oz with that, then go to a small town in Oz and get the copper to sort it for you. (1 copper towns are the best for that stuff).

The good thing about a Learners in Oz is you can ride big bikes that have a certain power-to-weight ratio. DR600's and all sorts of big bikes.
Here's a PDF of the list of approved motorcycles in Victoria (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/86E6A9AB-1633-4E4B-8790-BFF74DF03487/0/LAMSlistpublishedWeb31July08.pdf) they have just introduced. They'll do the same in NZ soon apparently, using the same list probably.



The new system allows learner and newly licensed riders to ride motorcycles and scooters with a maximum power/weight ratio of 150 kilowatts per tonne and a maximum engine capacity of 660cc.
The new system will restrict access to high risk race replica 250 cc motorcycles which have acceleration characteristics which are unsuitable for inexperienced riders. These motorcycles have been identified in research as being over represented in motorcycle crashes.
The new system provides learners and new riders access to a greater number of motorcycles and scooters that have ABS and combined braking systems. These measures have the potential to improve road safety.

It will also allow larger riders to learn on a larger motorcycle or scooter that some may feel more comfortable riding.

Just checked it out... Reckon a motard would be the best bet until I get through to my full... DRZ400 or something.. Il try and get my restricted before leaving.

Yup, do get your restricted first I reckon aye, but since you don't have your full motorcycle license you might get tested for theory.

When I got my license in Victoria I remember getting the license there is pretty piss easy, in fact it's easier than NZ. There's still your graduated license system but when you go the tests they take place in a controlled environment (within the motorcycle license testing facility).

Funny enough when I got my probation license (equivalent of restricted here) I had to spent a whole day doing some theory and a test involving stops and cornering, more like a advanced version of the basic handling test. There isn't any of this learner 70km/h limit and curfew bull shit over there. Once you get your probation, wait for 12 months and you get automatically transferred to a full.

Learner licences are not accepted for conversion in Queensland. The process of converting a full licence was pretty easy. Rock up with enough of the accepted forms of ID, fill in a couple of forms, wait for f'ing ages in the Queensland Transport office, get your picture taken then walk out with a freshly printed Video Ezy card ... sorry, Queensland Driving Licence. Oh, and you only have three months grace to get an QLD licence. Foreign learners licences are not valid for use.

Queensland have just abandoned their old system of learner and restricted licence holder restrictions; essentially there were none. You could quite legally ride a Busa on a learners. Now, instead of going to the LAMS system in place in NSW and VIC, they've gone for a 250cc limit. Same bizarre contradictons of the system currently in NZ; an RS250 is learner legal, but a DR-Z300 is not.

So if you transfer it in one state it's good for the others.

Does anything change once it's been transfered, is there any advantage in not doing it till you have to.
