Had you ever ridden a motorbike before, or did you just get out there?
Oh what is your gear like??

Hi IronTusk, where are you getting yours from?
I used to be a dairy farmer, so spent about 5 hours a day on a Ag100! And all off road stuff obviously, usually about about 3km/h behind a mob of cows lol.
My gear is awesome, cost me about $1200 all up, got a pretty good discount though :)

I was in to much of a hurry to read the instructions :P lol

I think I had a few posts with you in another thread, mine is from Holeshot in Takapuna. When I get on mine it'll be my second ride ever, I had only ridden a quad and bicycles before my basic riding test
I'm not sure how much my gear is costing all up, it was $600 for the lot but I've chosen a few more expensive bits (Just helmet and gloves from memory) but cause they are out of stock of the pants I'm getting the next type up for the same price :) I have to use a nasty loan helmet for a week or 2 though, the supplier is out of stock of the helmet/colour/size that I want. On top of the usual bits I'm also going to get a Thor or 661 pressure suit, another $250 or so for that :(
Oh did you get black or silver? Mine is black, so nice to see it when I go up to the shop in my lunch break (I sometimes look for a reason to go up there :D)
newby
7th August 2008, 20:32
Oh yep i remember now! I ended up with a nolan helmet ($450), teknic Jacket ($500), teknic pants ($300?) and basic dri rider boots ($180) Thats all the RRP prices, rather than the prices i got them for....
If its in the shop now why cant you get it straight away? Mine is technically second hand....it has 221km on the clock...lol, Means i got it total for $5750 though, with 11 months reg and wof, and 23 month warranty still :)

7th August 2008, 20:53
I've forgotten the brand of my helmet (useless, i know) but it's $250, jacket is Strada, dunno the price on that, so are the pants ($140 for the normal ones, but the RRP on the ones I get is $240 :)) forgotten prices on boots/gloves.. $70 for gloves I think, armoured summer ones.
As for getting the bike, I figured I'd wait until I have my licence, so I'm doing the theory Saturday morning and then going in to finish the paperwork.
What does it sound like? I've only seen videos! Mine doesn't even have oil or petrol in it yet. Sounds heaps better than a Magna from what I know.
Listen to this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wQ3zptm4kk&feature=related Those pipes sound gooood.

Haha, to me it just sounds like another bike....its no harley....and its only a 250 lol
It rides well though, cruises at 100km/h no stress, and at quite low revs, and going up a reasonably steepish slope it maintains 100km/h, although i only weigh 71kg so im not a huge weight to haul around lol
Im guessing you helmet might be HJC? I got the one i did, as i can buy a kit which fits into it which has a couple little speakers, and a plug i can attach an ipod too as i plan to cruise to palmy and back reasonably frequently so want some music while im going that far!

been riding a little 125 suzuki scooter for 6 months and finally decided to upgrade to a 250cc bike.. took a vl 250 from coleman's suzuki for a test ride today around the city and loved it!
Got back and put down a deposit for a grey one with the next shipment they are getting in next week..
just need to wait another week or so until i get my annual bonus from work and it will be MINE!
Love this bike, even for a fatass like me - about 135kg - i was STRUGGLING to keep it under 60km in 3rd gear haha, cant wait to take one for a real ride!

Yeah that's right, for the basics anyway. Balance is simple, and I found corners easy if I had a corner to follow (Found it hard to judge an imaginary corner in a carpark  ) I managed to lock the front wheel up twice on my riding test (for the emergency stop) and I really hope I don't experience that on the road! The tyres had only done 30km though so they were probably still a bit waxy. I'll post in here if I manage to get out on it after having it delivered tomorrow :D

how fast were you going though when you wanted a little more oomph? 120? 130? ive read reports from men who way 140ish going about 130 on these no problem (not long term tho, the engine wouldnt like that heh)

Nah mate your bike was doing fine, I was following behind on my ER6F up until we went past that other groups bin site.. your corners were great for only riding over half a week. Seeing you pass the cars remind me of the GPX I had .. "timing, timing... revs are right.... NOW! *whack open throttle and wait for something to happen*" :D But it seemed to have enough kick to pass most cars! For a 250 that's all you can ask for!

It did feel like that a bit lol, and still getting used to the bike and its capabilities i was being fairly cautious as didnt want to run out of room halfway through passing and come into a corner i couldnt handle at to much speed and end up like those unlucky riders today.
Was awesome to see so many bikers out though, i had no idea there was that many, and most of them gave a nod or a wave when going past so were pretty friendly.

also Irontusk, i trained on a GN250 with the worst clutch you have ever seen, had to have it at like 4000 revs before even starting to release the clutch lol

Waiting for it to come in must be irritating! I think Holeshot just got another shipment, the guy who dropped it off said something taking the owners manual from one he assembled today. I want to start riding to work (all 50k zones..) but I won't until I'm confident.. must be completely different from the ride I had tonight, only saw a few cars tonight, just getting out of my driveway in the morning would be pretty stressful. Motorway sounds interesting :shifty:
What licence are you on, Ehgreiz??
Ehgreiz
12th August 2008, 23:49
just my learners, can go for restricted next month.
scooter is a lot easier than a bike, its kinda like a free ride in comparison, but in a way its a good way to start, cos when i went for my test ride the other week handling was no problem at all, just getting the hang of clutch control.
when i took it for the test ride it was around k road/ponsonby and mayoral drive in the center of town at 5pm - i think riding to work wont be too much of a problem if i can handle that without dying lol - stalled a few times but only once with a car behind me.. the main thing that freaked me out was turn into traffic either right or left (right is worse) - no problem on my scooter, if i see a gap i take it, but with the bike i was panicking a little lol - just need to get the hang of take-off and it will become much easier hehe
the thing that i need to get into the habit of doing is putting my left foot down when i stop so that i can rest my right foot on the rear brake pedal - on my scooter i have always been putting my right foot down - right foot on rear break is important, especially for hill starts - that way you dont have to juggle throttle/front break leaver when starting to move heh
Irontusk
12th August 2008, 23:56
Yeah it's those take offs that I'm rough on, just being able to twist and go sure would be easy, but where's the fun in that? :bleh:
Yeah I seem to juggle between my left and right foot.. bad habit probably.
And, I have a hard time keeping an eye on my speed, have to look right down, which isn't good.. maybe easier for short riders?
Oh the other problem on my ride was, the loan helmet I have until my proper one arrives is budget and has no vents, it fogs up instantly (and the air is pretty dry tonight!) and a fogged up TINTED visor is impossible to see through at night, so I had to have it open the whole time.
Ehgreiz
13th August 2008, 00:01
oh mate i understand the pain of a fogged up visor..
i have this visor insert thing for my helmet that you stick on inside the visor - fogless. its great
they are a bitch to put in properly though - first one failed and my second one is starting to as well - works well enough but eventually will leak and start fogging up inside it - maybe 3rd time will eventually be the charm there lol
i used some rainX treatment but it didnt seem to work for me at all heh
Irontusk
13th August 2008, 07:21
Yeah I'll look into getting something for it once I have my own helmet, won't worry about this one.

Yeah load is good, but not too much load. The book says not to go past half throttle for the first 800ks, and then 3/4 for the next 800, but you do need to vary your speed, which is the loading/unloading of the bearings and all that.

First ride in the rain tonight.. it's not nice! The one leak in my gear I had.. wet spot between the legs! HORRIBLE. Aside from that and tinted visors being no good for riding at night in the rain.. it was alright.
Still not so great at getting my feet up onto the pegs quickly when taking off though..

Woah alright I locked the back wheel up for the first time tonight, that felt dodgy, bloody cop with his lights on making me let him through
I found a VL250 with a bolt on pack rack http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Cruiser/photos/a-172056827/p-74336803.htm thought maybe one of you would be interested in fitting something like that to yours. Doesn't really suit the bike (what bike does suit a packrack?!) but convenience is nice. I find that panniers look like hand bags, lol.
How many Ks have you guys got down now? I've done a whole 85 :woohoo:

Hey dude, haha, i did that on one of my first rides in the wet too, but i did it deliberately, just to test out the braking in the wet compared to dry!
Im just about to click over 1000 :P Although it had 220 on the clock already so im up to 780 in 2 weeks!

Not really lol, just did a couple of big trips, like the one with EAR around the coast to Kaiaua, and then last week down to Cambridge and back (in the non-stop rain lol)

Rain, not my favourite! I wouldn't say I'm ready for a ride that long
Heh, something I learnt tonight.. too much speed, not enough lean and a roundabout don't agree with each other too well, I must've been an inch or 2 away from running up over that curb! My foot went in the grass (yes, I know, don't put your feet down!)

Don't worry. There's concrete dust and an odd dent in the header-collecting-bit of my exhaust. Not enough speed, and too much lean, uh.
PEOPLE THROW CEMENT AT YOUR FOR IT! Uh...
First time I ever got my foot above the handlebars whilst sitting down, though :2thumbsup

hey ive done about 170 kms over the last few days, keep trying to find excuses to go out haha
getting the hang of the clutch pretty quickly, in the last 2 days i havent stalled once haha..
although on the first day i got it i was at the front of a queue at the lights at the top of a slight slope, and i kept stalling, and wondering wtf was going on.. i was doing everything right.. and then i realised i was in second gear ><
the ppl behind me were pissed :(
i even did a little blat on the motorway, even with my fat ass i can get up to 110 at like 50% or less throttle in 5th gear - i like it..
i will post some pictures later - i got some willy and max saddlebags on it, they reeaaaallly suit the bike..
the only thing i can say at this point is fucking auckland weather..
went for a small ride today when there was blue sky about... 30 minutes later it was PISSING down - didnt have my wet weather pants on :(
ah well..

Has anyone else dropped theirs yet? :crybaby: Trying to get into my garage quickly this afternoon (cause it was raining) I somehow managed to let it go while backing it in, dunno if it was my stupid bumpy cobblestone driveway or my new helmet with it's blindspots making me twist round further than usual, but I ended up tipped over to the right, sitting there swearing to myself and wondering wtf to do next.
Luckily all it's resulted in is a tiny scratch just behind where the exhaust goes from 2 into 1 and the tip of the front brake lever looks slightly rough. Still pretty pissed off at myself about it.
I've done 180kms on mine all up now I think. Planning to ride it to work on Tuesday, pretty much rain or shine (gonna take my bike cover into work and leave it there for shitty days :2thumbsup)
I really don't know how I dropped it, I picked it up by myself so I don't know how I didn't hold it up in the first place. :brick:
