Get yourself a spool lacing wire from any hardware store, cut off a metre or two, double it up put the open ends in a vice and the other end in a drill a wind it up till it goes taut and you've got yourself the ideal wire for securing grips
the spliced wire doesn't cut into the grip when tied up, doesn't come undone, and looks heaps better than any single strand wire.
Also when removing the old grips pull the inner edge away from the handle bar & spray a bit of brake cleaner in the gap  the old grip will just slide off the bar even if has been glued in place.
Clean the handle bar before fitting the new grips then when putting the new grips on spray a bit of brake cleaner into the grip rinse in around then flick out the excess and slide the grip into place then secure the grip with a piece of spliced wire and it'll be as solid as a rock :niceone:

Tying things up  it's a fine gauge wire & comes in spools from 1km to what ever you're after. We've got a 10km spool at work, had for the last couple of years and looks like we'll get another couple years before we have to replace it.
You'd be amazed how many guys come in with MX bikes wanting new grips fitted and I do the job in front of them as I described above, their jaws drop when the see it all done in a couple of minutes

i bought some grip wire years ago from Motomail. Comes in a little container, and is stainless wire.
You should really use grip glue aswell, or the grips can still turn with just tie wire on

I used some Hairspray to stick them on.
