View Full Version : What I really hate about riding in the rain..

is having to clean my bike afterwards.

I really don't mind riding if it's wet. If your tyres are good, and you've got decent gear on it's not a problem.

But I REALLY hate having a dirty bike, and it's driving me to distraction drying and cleaning it every day. I usually love to have some quality polishing and fettling time with the SV, but if it's just become a chore.

Oh for some global warming.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Especially if you live in Auckland, because lately up here it's been raining every bloody day. Bike is nearly always dirty.

Bring on the spring already. :cold:

Mine looks bloody terrible and the little park light in the headlight cluster has blown as well and I haven't gotten around to fixing it. Sigh.

Bro totally agree sometimes i would cage it to work just because I dont want it getting dirty, not that it matters now lol

my only issue with the rain is putting wet weather gear on.... then taking it off.
PAIN IN THE ASS

i love the dirt but i would like at least a nice day of sunshine and no wind

Bikes getting dirty isn't as bad as getting dirty oneself! I wiped my wet visor with a tissue this morning after getting to work and the water that came off it was brown! Damn spray from cages in front!

Clean bike? Pah!
Dirt is the new black.
I rode my bike onto the Interisland Ferry yesterday and some other bikers there went "Woah dude, where have you come from? You got some mud action going there."
A dirty bike is instant street-cred.
Little did they know it was just from SH1 slips all the way Chch to Picton.

Hmmm...I think it's because I ride a little old mid-80's 250 that I feel the need for street-cred.
You blokes on your big bikes are more secure in your hardcore biker status I guess.

Yet another thing I like about my Buell is that it has no bright steel parts and is remarkably easy to keep tidy.

Even worse when you dont bother checking the weather forecast (like me) and then spend the evening of a reasonably sunny day lovingly washing, drying and polishing your bike... to wake up the next morning and find its pouring down and a southerlies on the way... :eek5:

meh, I clean it once a week so it doesn't bother me how dirty it gets in-between, what pisses me off is the fact that it's raining, or even more so the constant gusts of wind in between the gale thats already blowing, well either way I don't have a choice anymore it's my only vehicle now, I don't mind a bit of shitty weather but this winter is starting to drag on. I suppose it's the best one wev'e had in years for it's "winteriness"

If you ask me this winter has blown past, it's awesome.. I got stuck in the second crazy storm up west and loved it! I don't care if my bike gets dirty.. the dirtier it gets just means the prettier it looks when I do get around to cleaning it !:sunny:

DarkLord
8th August 2008, 15:43
Agreed. It is definitely dragging on. I guess in some way we are paying for the summer we had. But it still sucks, it'd be nice to wake up and see blue skies rather than overcast skies about to piss down at any time.

I'm in the same boat as the bike is my only vehicle, so the sooner this winter gets over itself, the better.

I hate it too, a bike looks half its worth when its dirty, no need for it at all!
Keep at it Pwalo, you have my full support when it comes to the ' Clean Like Its Tarnished Syndrome'.....or as I like to call it....C.L.I.T.S..:shifty:

Fookin' pansy twats. Clean bikes are for girls. When I see a clean sparkly bike, first thing I think is `he mustn't ride it much, dun he?'

GiJoe1313. Now there's a man. He can turn a brand-new off-the-shop-floor freshly purchased motorcycle into a proper dirty dusty bug-splattered proper bike in 24 hours. That Hornet 900 don't look two months old!

Sorry, I just can't resist.
The alternative is don't ride your bike and just polish it all the time. Take pictures of yourself standing next to it, get your bitch to do some nude pictures next to it (definitely post those unless she looks like Aunty Helen), post on biker sites, talk about how rugged you are, talk shit, wear leather vests with tassels, the list goes on and on.

Also, when you sell it you can say it was ridden by a nana and polished all the time. It'll improve its resale value and the bike rider who buys it and rides it will be happy. Bwahahahahaaa :2guns:

Kind of like the guy that doesn't want to ride their bike because it'll put too many k's on it. It is a machine. Thats what they are for, yeah?

I just couldn't resist, so please excuse me and carry on...

I hate that about the rain.. no issues about getting wet. I don't have a caar license so it's my only transport and I love it.

But last week I spent an hour and a half washing and chrome polishing my bike only to need to go out and get some milk and it was dirty again!

Just dried it off at home and it was looking shiney again. Still get to enjoy admiring your bike during the short period it is clean though. Sense of pride in that.

I hate the wetness  ewww water running down the back of my jacket yech! I don't clean my bike that much...I like it to have that ridden on look. To me it's a bit like having a gleaming SUV. AND when it isn't perfectly clean I can't see some of the scratches in the paint work from previous owners. Plus I find the more that you clean it the more you have to clean it and so now when I do actualy make that effort I really enjoy the result of my hard work. Dunno if it's true or not but I'd heard that a bit of grime is good and leads to less damage to the paint in the long run?

Take care with that. Wet bike + heated room = rust

Ride to work every day except when the storm came through for those couple of days. Yep the bike gets covered in crap and yep it gets cleaned every weekend its a labour of love!! I get some morbid satisfaction out of polishing her up! I'd rather be riding my bike than sat in a car any day. For those of you who dont like it getting wet.....you may need to wait a while yet before you unwrap it, push it out the garage and discover the battery has gone flat because of 'months' of no use!!!! Saying that tomorrow is looking good......better get out and give my bike a wash just in case eh!

I have to ride through 4 road works on my way to work so clean is not an option. The real bitch is on a nice (rare) day I still have to cover my work pants or risk filth.

Hey Hutt city or whoever is doing this motorway work all at the same time, enough already!

No point in having lotsa chrome if ya dont spend time making it shiny - it IS a labour of love and I for one dont mind doing it. Its a case of if I look after the bike... etc.

And besides, getting into all the nooks and crannys is a great way to a: get to know your bikes bits and b: find out if somethings outta place / missing / loose etc.

I guess one good thing about riding in the rain and liking having a clean bike is that because it is constantly getting dirty you are cleaning it very regularly, and cleaning the bike is a good way to constantly check over it and make sure everything is in working order, hopefully through doing that you may be able to nip any potential problems in the bud before they become bigger issues.
