Just a couple of quick questions from novice...
When parking in carparks etc (during the day) how do you secure your bike? Just use the built in steering lock, or use other security devices aswell?
And what do you do with your helmet? Chain it to your bike, or take it with you?
And finally, if you are at your house for example, and are going to pick up a mate on the way to somewhere else, and you have your helmet, and a spare for your mate at your house, how do you carry that spare helmet untill you pick up your mate?
:)

1.steering lock + brake dick lock
2. bikes usually have a place to lock helmet on to it - find it , or ask someone with the same bike to tell you/or ask a suzuki dealer.
3. preferably mate has his own helmet, if not , there are helmet carrybags from any bike shop that go over your sholder and do exelent job. cost 10$ from the top of my head

1. Whats a brake disk lock, and how does it work?
2. ok will do...
3. Not one mate, more like 10 different chicks who all of a sudden want a ride....

Usually built in steering lock will suffice, but disc locks are an added anti-theft device. Easy to carry. Don't get too paranoid...untill you're out on the road. THEN EVERY CAGE IS OUT TO GET YOU...
Carry it with you...non biker chicks love bikers...gotta have all the artwork on 'em though...
A pack rack bag...big enough to hold A helmet(and a 24 pack that your mate gives you for taking him on your bike...)

It's just a small padlock that goes through a hole in your front brake disc, making the bike un-rideable unless you don't care about having front brakes. It's a good way of just making people think twice about stealing your bike.
You can bike helmet strap thinks which are like stretchy bungy nets that allow you to tie down a spare helmet on your pillion seat securely.
How long have you been riding? Lol may not be a great idea to pillion if you're on your learners and wanting to pillion around drury at 100kph on a 250 :sweatdrop

And i think it will be more of a short cruise up the street and back, rather than 100km/h on the open road lol

True true fair enough then. At least pillioning on an intruder should be slightly comfortable for them huh! I'm out Karaka way so may see ya out on the roads sometime.

Dude ... welcome to wonderful world of bikes : ) .. yes ... girls love a good bike, it the "dangerous" thing .. LOL ... but don't get me started .. i',m old ... and bitter ... ha ha ..
as for the the fundamentals ... buy a disk lock ... do it! it's not going to stop them loading your bike into a van, but it will stop some areshole trying it on.
Oxford do a great line of disk locks http://www.oxford-shop.co.uk/cat218_1.htm, you can find them in any good bike shop. i use one myself :)
as for the helmet, I carry my spare in a backpack, i'm not a big fan of packracks, i think they turn the bike into a pack horse, if i'm going out of town i'll use panniers, bit if you have a helmet bag, that's fine, just make sure it doesn't swing forward .. that will really screw with your day.
and dude ... a ride up the street and back is not a ride ... LOL ..if you're so damn swamped with women asking for a ride and all you're offering is a ride up the street and back ... dear god! .. do i really need to continue ... mate i'll pm you my number .. LOL .. i can help ... LOL ... really i can.
Mind you so could Disco ... LOL

I second this works fine for me!! As long as your not going crazy in the twisties while carrying the helmet its fine lol! It is also the only way I have done it so far.

I third this... as long as you arent going to far. Other wise it becomes really annoying.
As for locking my bike. I just used the steering lock. If someone really wants your bike.. they will take it regardless of how you lock it up :argh:

Not to be the killjoy but is pillioning someone while 'technically' on your learners really a good idea? Is it worth the $400 ticket if you do get pulled or the unimagineable fallout should you crash and kill or injure your pillion? The consequences would far outway the motive I would think... no matter how experienced you are, it is and always will be the other idiots on the road (that you cant predict the actions of) who cause the majority of accidents.
I had plenty of people wanting a ride on my 'new' bike when I first started out - including my pregnant partner - but all had to wait for both their sake and my own. The choice is yours but the risk is huge.

1. disc lock or lock and chain to something like a lampost is the better option, if you do go for the disc lock, atatch some string between it and your brake lever as a reminder, serious damage will occur if you forget and ride off.
2. Dont use helmet lock on bike, you can bust em with an ear bud. See link http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=61535
3. Carry Helmet on back seat with a cargo net, not a good idea carried any where on your person, though we've all prolly done it.
That's it for the advice. Farken enjoy yourself mate and good luck with them ladies, gotta love the ladies.

Good luck with the 250 matey. Dont' want to sound like Mr Boring but make sure your pillions have reasonable protective gear. A few of us on the site have "been there and done that" with regards to crashing with a pillion and you feel a right cunt if you come out of an accident in better condition than your pillion.
If you're short of gear you give the pillion the best jacket, gloves and helmet. It's amazing how much slower and alert you ride when you're the one with the $hite old helmet and no gloves.
OH...and have fun

1) I leave a picture of my ex-wifes mother on my bike and that seems to deter thieves really well.
2) An oxford lid lasher is good idea. Google it.

Don't ride with a helmet on your elbow or in a bag on your back, just think about what that will do if you fall/get knocked off..

You might find you get a longer ride if you wobble up and down the road :ride:

too true..........my wife has a vl250intruder as well and the helmet lock is under the seat. with the forward footpegs you could probably lock spare helmet on there and ride normally. hope your bike is the black colour.
