Heavy snow closes Rimutaka Hill

Snow has closed Rimutaka Hill between Upper Hutt and Wairarapa.

Police said snow began to fall quite heavily about 7.40am today, and the road was closed 20 minutes later. The MetService said snow showers were expected on the road until early tomorrow morning.

Another 2-4cm was likely to fall before 6am, and the MetService warned that 8cm could fall in some places.

Snow was also likely to fall on the Desert road until early tomorrow, with 1-3cm expected.

In the South Island, snow was likely to fall on the Lewis and Porters Pass roads until this evening.

I went to Upper Hutt and saw the snow on the hills, it was also lightly snowing in Upper Hutt as well. Shouldve taken photos! There was a car at Countdown lower Hutt with snow all over the bonnet too!

Its also blowing a fucken gale. On my way back toward Lower Hutt via the motorway I thought my bike was about to blow up a few times due to loss of power from the wind.

I was playing golf at Te-Marua at 8.30am. Standing on the second tee and couldn't see the green (par 3 ) for the blizzard that hit. Snowed on an off for four hours. The hills were covered in snow. Unfortunately I didn't have the camera with me. The shots I took with the mobile aren't clear enough.
