I'm assuming it will want 40/10? If so, great (I still have a small drop of that in the garage).
If it is 15/40, even better! I've got LOADS of that!
Anything else and I'll have to find a petrol station that still sells bottles of oil...
Any advice appreciated,

Wow.
Thank you SO much for that. You can't get a manual in the UK (well not as far as I can see) for the XV250, so this is going to come in very handy.
Might have to wait until no-one is around at work before printing it off though... :msn-wink:

My motorcycle has a Virago engine, so it is handy for me too.
Sadly it is a non-printable manual......there is a wee disclaimer on the front page.

Recommended oil:
30.F 40.F 50.F 60.F
<--------------------SAE 20W40 type SE motor oil
----------------------> SAE 10W30 Type SE motor oil
0.C 5.C 10.C 15.C
Oil quantity:
Total amount:
1.8 L (1.6 Imp qt, 1.9 US qt)
Periodic oil change:
1.4 L (1.2Imp qt, 1.5 US qt)
With oil filter replacement:
1.6 L (1.4 Imp qt, 1.7 US qt)
NOTE:
Recommended engine oil classification;
API Service "SE". "SF" type or equivalent
(eg. "SF-SE", "SF-SE-CC", "SF-SE-SD' etc)
Ok, I actually use this oil,as recommended by the bike shops...
and have used it since I brought the bike.

dang it the top arrow was supposed to be under 40.F
and the bottom arrow was supposed to stop on top of the 15.C
