Me too,how about if in Hawera use Furlong for accomodation,or what about Whanga pub.About $95 per person dinner, breaky and bed, although may not need bed.Boob has cheap deals for us in NP,(mates rates and all that hehe).
Or what about Konini lodge up at Dawson Falls, short run to Kaponga for beer if needed, can have a huge byo cook up in kitchen which makes the cost less.

Good suggestions, one and all ! I'm making some enquiries. Dawson fallls under new management and very expensive plus only has 12 rooms ! Furlong also has limited accom but worth a look. NP seems most suitable at this stage depending on numbers! Or something like the manutahi, who would run a van from Hawera ! Watch this space trend setters

Flag Dawson Falls itself $300plus for 2,was saying the lodge run by alpine club?Take sleeping bag etc.
Manuathi would be brilliant,as they can put the bikes behind the pub.Alton close by and a nice trip to the damsite.
Furlong would easy hold most 26 rooms etc,but plenty motels as well close to town, depending where everyone wants to eat etc.Maybe the Sth Taranaki club as well for grub.Could suss out numbers and arrange buffet meal at say a pub.

Same here re dam site, good on an xr500 or similar.
If in September keep in mind the 19th I think there is races at Hawera that day, maybe check the sign outside the gables on Waihi Rd to see what day,as Furlong can be busy, mind you the horse transporter drivers won't be there after races, just night before.
Mmm hangi sounds good.

Hey all, yep I can do a sharp rate for the KB'er crew. I got a 40 bed hostel so heaps of space, just depends on when exactly as i have large forward bookings. Parking is outside but the lodge is set at the end of a cul de sac down a private drive way so all bikes can be safely parked right out front of the lodge in full view but well away from the road or public view.
Let me know as soon as you have a few possible dates ironed out

If you can get a "do" going like the Sth Island Kb'rs can I'm in . Don't want it too big big they can do it with only 30 odd people and it is great. For me it was the journey as well. The trip is part of it. Maybe you will get a few of them crossing the ditch. A couple of :apint: and you have a  party.

we know a farmer out whanga who joins onto the whanga rd so it makes a good loop.
not sure of the length but a mate on his rm 250 only just makes the loop and he has run out of fuel once.
theres heaps of routes out there up foretry tracks and wot not.
i'm always keen to go out there for a spin.
this info only any good for off rd bikes i guess.

if you lot do decide to stay up the lodge at dawsons falls and want a hangi.
i only live about 5 mins from the intersection up to there so could sort the hangi down here at the farm and bring it up.
just depends on when you do it.
or you can do the hangi here and use our vehicle to take it up dawsons if i too busy calving as long as you leave enough for me to have a feed. yum

A great loop is from New Plymouth area, head north to the 8 mile junction, proceed right to Taumarunui then south onto the famous SH43 to Whanga for lunch then onto Stratford & onto NP again. That is an awesome ride, in either order. Fantastic roads with bugger all cars on them

Has the backblocks of Aotuhia semi sealed road now?We used to tramp and hunt the area back in the late 70-early 80's,the road to walkway was only a track, now seems to be sealed to top of Kohi saddle according to info sheets, likewise the bridge to somewhere used to take about 2hrs walk from the Herlihy homestead, they were good off road tracks for bikes, even better tracks at the time if quads were invented back then.

just another thing I thought of .. some of us from the outter regions will have at least a 2-3+ hour ride to get there ... unless we travel fri after work, & it would make a more expensive weekend ....

Sounds a good plan,as chanceyy said maybe leave the ride till say lunchtime,if you decide to do the mountain loop from Hawera.
How bout Hawera to Dawson Falls via Skeet Rd(Te Roti end),back down to Strat-Opke Rd to Stratford, onto The Plateau, then to East Egmont via any back road to there, then home via the top loop Wiremu Rd etc, then down Manaia Rd to Manaia nice trip back to Hawera, should take say 3 hour max with stops for pics.If leave at 1.00pm home to get ready around 4.00pm.

Check on Carrington Road's status as "Atmonauti" aka Dan the Canadian found it was closed a couple of weeks back. Bridges still out after the big rains a while back, and possibly more mayhem to come if the weather gurus have got it right for this weekend.
Plymouth Road, SH45 to Okato and Oxford/Saunders Road is a great alternative.
Whanga for lunch is a must do for any visitors to Taranaki but give the Whanga Pub publican (he's a biker too :niceone:) a heads up to expect extras for lunch.

What Boob suggested would be a good ride,go fm.Up Urenui way, up to eight mile, out to Taumaranui, back (there's only 13k's of gravel & is mint if it hasn't just been graded) to Whanga then gives you the option of turning left or right @ Stratford !!!

Trail ride down the whangamomana Rd to the wanganui river would be cool with the blessings of the locals, though I understand the Whanga Rd has been in very poor condition for many years.
Keen to go with the flow, though I might have to break down out side the Toko pub for old times sakes.

Ohh this thread is rocking! Not to put a dampner on things but people .. September is a bloody wet month especially around here! Camping? If you like it rough .. dont mind a cyclone or two, maybe even throw in the odd tornado! lol .. mind you if yourv been drinking it wont really matter eh!
:shutup:I'll be in my car so happy to drive to where ever is decided for dinner & socializing! The Pub shindig sounds fab, Boobs idea sounds pretty ideal especially where theres room for price negotiation on accommodation/food/Boobs DJing skills (and we better not be listening to Country Music all night either Boobs thats just not cool and I dont care how much you like Willi Nelson lol) ...
Better to centralize the event so that there isnt to much traveling/stumbling involved other than the bike riding, & bike/car/unicycle/moon hopper security will also be a top priority, places like the Furlong Motor Inn/Truckie Stop however handy, is not that secure.
As a first event, the easier to organise the better, then you can gauge the next ones! :woohoo:
Awesome Paul! I'll be keeping a close eye on this.

Quick answers,PNto Hawera 160km easy 2 hour(I did Hwa-PN in 2.0hr with stop at Bulls to thaw out 3 weeks ago with heaps of wind).
Hawera-NP72km easy hour usually 45mins depend on traffic.
Waverley -Hawera 45km nice stop point is big sun cafe.
PN-NP about 250km.
PN-Whanga about 250km.

As there is cheap accomodation and billets in New plymouth would it not be prudent to make use of these.
As Boob can not be too self serving he can't push his venue as much as it deserves. If his lounge area is too small or full of hot backpacker chicks then a local venue for meal & get together could be used. It is also close to numerous motels for those requiring elite discression.
No matter where a ride starts from, it could end for the day in New plymouth, followed by dinner, drinks & chinwag.
Sunday could take some backroads before returning home.

I can organise a poker run for sat arvo if interested. Short and simple.
Furlong isn't bad for security, can park your bike right by the door of your unit. No trucks there on a sat.

Probably more relevant to next time, secure parking isn't a big issue at Whanga. According to the publican the locals aren't interested in vehicles that don't have 4WD or facility for bringing home dead pigs
Not unusual out there to see the locals ride through town helmetless on a dirt bike with a rifle slung across their back :ar15:

I could prolly offer secure parking for 20-25 bikes in my garage in New Plymouth, that's about a 10 minute taxi ride to boobs and the centre of town.
Perhaps if out of towners park up at my gaff, I could ferry them to Boobs hostel in the fun bus, a night of frivolities in town and then a ride out/home the next day.
It depends if it's to be NP based and whether Boob could accommodate those that wanna stay.
If we did the forgotten highway ride, we could lunch at Whangas then after, there's a split off in Taumarunui where every one could bugger off in there chosen direction.
Just some ideas to throw in the mixer. :niceone:

As Nike says just do it! Most who want to be there will be,if they can't it is a bummer, might have to come by car(doh)as will do a house/tennant check and may not be up till about 4.30pm Saturday at Hawera after working, but don't need to go home till Monday hehe, might utilise my handle at "Barries" on the Sunday.

There's an idea if you do a ride based around Nth Taranaki and meal up in NP,maybe can organise brunch in Hawera for those heading south on Sunday.Allowing for hangovers to clear Sunday morning.

Meeting at Boobs, I think. There is a bar directly below his abode if needed.
As far as I'm aware, we gather at Boob's have a few beers and nibbles and ride out the following day. Accomodation available at Boobs Back packers.

Yep thats my understanding, meet here on Saturday, some are staying at the lodge, some are local but all welcome to socialise here for the night, drinky poos, food etc or can maxi taxi it to town for drink n food, then ride again the next day, then home.
Just to clarify we have two lodges, one in the city above a bar (shit parking & very loud on a Saturday night) & one near the racecourse (on the CBD fringe) set in the bush with good parking & quiet (except when a load of bikers arrive lol).

I guess Whangas is a likely ride on Sunday, still to be decided as far as I know. Come and have a Lil drinky at boobs Saturday night, I'm sure that will be a topic of conversation.
Where is this track exactly, is it roadbikeable or just a knobbly excursion.

Sorry for the delay in getting this done! :done:
Plan is as follows:
New Plymouth and surrounding districts riders to meet at Challenge Katere at 11.30 onwards for a 12.00pm departure. (where the truck pumps used to be, behind petrol station building. You can access this from Devon Rd heading north or from Katere Rd).
Make sure you and your steed are appropriately fed and watered!
From here we will head up Katere Rd and onto Egmont Rd, coming out at Egmont Village.
Continue on to Stratford where we will regroup at the old tavern on the left just past the second round about (diagonally across from Malone's (where the toy run usually stops).
Then we will take Celia St\Opunake Rd on the right through to Opunake and rendezvous with the Southerners there at 1.30pm.
The next stop is just up the road at Oanui where those that want to can go through Oanui Vistors Centre (there is no charge for this).
Once we have talked enough crap here we will head through to New Plymouth where we can regroup again just inside the 50kph zone so those that want to and don't know the way can travel en masse to Boobs place (Timandra Street) for more bullshit and an ale or two to wash it down with! (watch out for the front door there, it's idiot proof  )
Here's a map for those that are visual learners...(click on the 'View Larger Map' at the bottom left of the map to see better!)

Just a few thank-yous:
Paulmac for the idea and execution thereof, Nadroj and Boob, for picking it up and running with it and anyone else involved in making it happen. It was a credit to your efforts, well done guys.
Pritch008; for taking a stranger under his wing and making me feel very welcome amongst a sea of strange faces.

Too many others to mention but it was great to meet you all, not a single one of you resembled my mental image of you, especially Shafty who doesn't actually have a lovely pair of jiggling bosoms :(

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
I've got a list of peoples names (including the ones that couldn't make it) so will keep that for the future. No doubt there will be a whole list of new people that will join KB before the next get together so will keep on top of that as well.
Thanks also has to go to those from out of Taranaki that made the effort to come visit us, it was great to meet you and look forward to seeing you again.
Also if anyone wants a high res copy of a pic, PM me your email and I'll send it to you.
As I said earlier, Great Day, Great Company, Great Ride.
No doubt we'll catch up again soon, it'd be a good idea to add everyone (or at least those that you want to!) to your "Friends" list.
Easy way to keep in touch and see if anyone wants to go out for a ride sometime too...

My bike was at Robt Taylor's, so every three days or so I'd visit Energy Honda and see if I could bend the knee far enough to get on one of the VFRs in the showroom. It took a month before I could ride.:ride:

Sorry i couldn't make it people.
these last few days have been the worst in my farming carrer i think.
i woke up on my birthday to a cow with black mastitis so after treating her then milking then giving her more therapeutic drugs iv i thought she be sweet but no on sunday morning she dead.
on saturday had to calve 1 cow during the day which i rang the vet to come help but befor ehe got there i managed to get the little calf out,
milking time sat arvo a cow sat her arse in the only little hole in the paddock and when she went to stand up couldn't stand up and tipped into the hedge so she was blown up like a balloon so had to stab her to release the gasses.
only had a stanley knife but it got the job done.
call the vet at 3.30pm thinking i'll still get to NP after milking well typical of my luck lately vet arrives at 6 and takes hour and half to check her all out and sew up the hole i'd given her.
by time i check the cows it was getting on near 8pm shattered went home and showered and crashed .
come sunday all ready for trail ride but no my shithouse luck continues.
2 cows calved down run off so had to truck them home and miss my trail ride.
and my bad luck continued today but im over talkin about farming.
im tired and sick of farming at the moment.
think i'll become a male whore and become a school teacher.
i better nake the next Taranaki KB meet.

Got to say that part of farming isn't the best, this time of year especially. At least you didn't have a cow go down with milk fever on the bloody turntable(yet),and half slip off the platform, thank god she responded to magnessium injection lol and got to feet. And that I wasn't a couple of feet closer when she dropped.
Don't need another tornado this year.

Also do not ever enter Sydney airport and as you get to customs talk to fellow kiwis about the B.T.James skit about entering Oz,the immigration guys asks you have a record,Billy says "nah mate ya still nedd one to get in?"Do not say this within earshot of any immigration guy, they don't get it or are still upset about their colonisation history.

Mystery ride on the 2nd will be meeting with the catwalk tour at Action Suzuki at 10 am for coffee and muffins before we depart. Maybe some NP riders can escort them down ? Maybe some wanganiu riders can come up and escort them south ?

Yeah some of the P n P runs last year were way to short for my liking & not overly imaginative, but a group ride all the same. I often ride with a weekly group that meet at the Caltex next to Maccas every Thursday around 5:30 to 6, those rides are long & always interesting, Malcolm spends a fair amount of time preparing the route each week even to the extent to incorporate the sun setting to minimise sun strike etc :first:
