View Full Version : Why has this barrier been installed

I have just come back from a ride around Paremata road and there is a new death trap for motorcyclists. It is not a cheese cutter but probably about as effective at injurying a motorcyclist.

My first thought was - what is the hazard the barrier is protecting against? There is no special hazard I can see - just some vegetation and then water. Have a look at the pics - the barrier is high up and supported on skinny metal posts. It doesn't look very strong - but what would I know?

Here is the location (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=-41.105711,174.908588&spn=0.011253,0.01914&z=16)

hmmm, interesting isn't it!

Last time I went to Otaki I noticed just out of Waikanae I think it was, some cheese cutters right on the side of the road, not very long, maybe a few hundred meters and they didn't seem to be there for any reason either, looked to be a drain they were protecting Jo Public from. I would rather fall off my bike into a bit of water than one of those bloody awful barriers or a cheese cutter eh!

Yep - as per the CCs, it is the posts that present the greatest danger. Note it is a numbered (Transit controlled) road as well...
Their 'rules' state that a barrier is only to be used where the danger of no barrier is greater than having it. Strangely, grassy verges have become dangerous (in some cases)

a. Transit do not give the proverbial Flying Fuck about Motorcyclists. Don't compain or they'll sharpen the poles.

b. That is a DoC protected wetland and they don't want cars full of petrochemicals and heavy metals diving into the area off the road. I kind of agree with that.

Fair enough, if that is the reason. Nothing wrong or expensive about double-railing it, is there?

yeah man there could be a poor defenceless snail in there or maybe its for the pukekos to stand on for a better take off so they reach head height when ya roar past?
we got that shit creeping up around here as well
even new cheese cutter beiing installed around the show as well

I have actually been in a vehicle that has gone off that exact piece of road. It was quite a soft landing actually and the car was still quite driveable after it was pushed back onto its wheels and winched back on to the road... so I'm buggered if I can see why a barrier would be needed there.

they look like arse.

steel armo isnt too bad, just dont crash!

Looks like they would of had a few drivers fall asleep there and head off into the water. Looks like a 100k zone?

better yet go slide into the armco an then type us a little story as to how you now feel about it, an why you would still prefer armco vs. concrete.

100K zone?, unless you know the road - keep the cavern shut.

Agreed, a 2nd rail wouldn't exactly break the bank :blank:

but you'd loose the pretty view of the water.

If you were low enough to see under that top rail, I doubt the 'view' would high on your priorities

I drive a 40 foot semi round there on Sundays... tis an 80 k zone and you really don't want to even try going that fast unless you are a GOOD rider AND know the road like the back of your hand...

I don't know about that.

That road used to be fun to ride when it was a 100k zone (provided it wasn't clogged up with Whitbyites and Porirua Eastians), with the 80k restriction its far too easy to lose one's licence on it now.

Not often a clean run can be made - too much traffic and easy to exceed the posted speed. The other side of the inlet is a better choice of ride.

But not for speeding, the charge would more likely be dangerous driving... to get the AUTO loss of licence, 120 km/hr would be needed...

Oh shit I'm fucked then. Ride that road every day. You can easily reach that overtaking.

Only takes ONE good lock-on... the funny bit would be watching the cop try to turn round...

Mebe, wouldnt' surprise me.
It's bollox though. Where the fook do they think all that nasty shit's going to end up once the armco's seperated the leaky stuff from the big lumps? Be a damn site less damaging to the baby seal chicks ifn' they left it like it was.

Wonder if we can expect a proliferation of barriers around the other side...

3AM is good, either side. Got to choose yer night, but I did 6 laps about that time a couple of weeks ago. :)

This 'high' beam armco on sharpened metal blades is just what I commented on about the Moonshine bridge work in progress.
As I said on that thread, I'm not opposed to wire rope barriers but this raising a single armco beam 2 feet off the ground to leave enough room for a rider to slide under and into the upright blade is just crazy?

A couple of kms west towards Whitby from where those pics were taken has the hilarious sight of new 'high rise' armco with 2.5 feet of clearance underneath placed in front of a solid wall of rock 20 metres vertical and about 50 cm behind the armco! Great. So now, instead of hitting a solid wall of rock you get to hit the armco or sharp upright support 0.05 seconds before the solid rock wall! Big difference. I'd prefer my chances with the rock wall. Maybe the rock/cliff face has spiritual inportance worthy of protecting?

Yer not happy with that kind of barrier. Armco with biker slicing steel post. The C*nts have put that up here too. Just past the Swinging Cow Cafe on SH1 heading ta Whangarei before the start of Brynderwyn Hills:angry2:
