Hiya,
Sunday was awesome. Had a wedding to go to so a quick run from Hunua to kaiaua was in order from 11.00am to 1.30pm. Had to have a blast and grabbed the vid camera for some on and off bike action.
Turn up the volume and enjoy :)
http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=VbaMhjZ_nIQ
Was fun and heaps of bikes out too.
Shame Utube knocks the daylights out of a good resolution MPEG :(

Man I could never take those roads that fast, way too bumpy and so many blind corners with cars jumping lanes on them! I do love those roads though, nice to see how they are done by someone with balls :P Few hairy moments and "tut tut" moments but I watched it from start to finished, comparing myself to your lines, etc.. sheesh I have a long way to go re. cornering!

A sick man with a broken bike taking out his frustrations on good bastards like beyond on the internet? You should be ashamed of yourself.
:nono:
Anyway, me personally, I've never made any claims to being a fast rider, and have no interest in proving anything in that regard. For that matter, neither did Sixpack - go back and read his post carefully.
If you want to race me just to see what happens, though, I'll be happy to oblige - but you'll have to wait until we can both afford race bikes in the same class. I'll see you on the track in a year or two's time.
Attempting to prove anything to anybody on the road is an idiot's game. You achieve nothing by mouthing off online in the style of carver et al other than making yourself look like a twat.

It could well have been our very own Blackbird - I had a PM from him on Monday asking if the black 1400 going like a bat out of hell on that road was me.

I can't access YouTube at work, but I look forward to watching beyond's handing out of many learnZ when I get home tonight. He's a man whom it's always a pleasure to learn from.

So what is the point of the video then . . . it proves what - other than the roads were dirty, busy roads, possibly still wet in places an sum dude is using it like a race track - an some wonder why people die. Its shit like this that makes the headlines. 3 people died that day. Have you ever ridden with beyond?
Have you read what he's written here on the subject that you're pontificating about in an attempt to justify your random nastiness?
Your comments are entirely misdirected. Your own apparent dislike of the whole of humanity appears to be behind them, rather than any real concern for anyone's safety.

A guy goes for a blat on his bike, makes a video and post it on the internet. Nothing new there.
Personally I don't like U2 very much and I wish he would hold the camera a bit more steady... but then again those are minor things.
I find it very difficult to evaluate how fast people are going in such videos... Looked nice and smooth to me - perhaps a bit faster over the dodgy bits than I would have found comfortable, but then again I'm a nana.
Looked like a nice ride to me.

Well, as usual a thread turns into some extra entertainment. Would you believe I got my first ever red rep the whole time I have been online with KB.
Do I need to say who? :(
Ok, firstly thanks for those of you I've ridden with who will vouch for my "careful" "considerate" driving. It's always a pleasure riding with you whenever we can.
Some really good comments here.
Main reason for the vid?
I believe the GSX1400 is one of the most underated modern sports tourers on the planet. Over and over again I have considered selling her and maybe getting something sportier but quite frankly it is probably one of the best all round sports tourers you could get your hands on. The vid was to show you it's awesome attributes.
Now, I was not riding anywhere near 100% taking into account the road conditions and traffic. Quick....yes but mad, certainly not. I like to come home from a ride. The video camera angle may show some "dum" moments, I can assure you they were all made with careful calculations regarding velocity and speed and road conditions. I used to ride a hell of a lot faster and harder than that.
To some, they will appear crazy to others boring just as this thread has pointed out.
Suspensions is perfect for me. The camera however is hard to keep still on a moving bike, a Panasonic Min DV the older bigger ones, with no image stabiliser.
Simple answer to the points made of stupid is that you had to be there. All manouevres were made in complete safety with plenty of room for error and you just really had to be there before you can judge.
Quick point for all the rock throwers. You break the law just once and you have broken the law period. You are just as guilty as I am in regard to the letter of the law. So, if you have never broken the law, judge away.
Cheers for the posts peeps :)

Bullshit. They might have seemed completely safe to you, but do you know the level of experience of the bike riders you passed? Or their impression of the degree of 'safety' that surrounds them? What about the car drivers? Do you know their levels of experience?
There are plenty of entirely possible senarios that could have made any one of those "safe manoeuvres" anything but safe.

Err, at the risk of sounding patronising, don't get out of bed in the morning because every day brings dangers that you cannot account or prepare for. Life and living is only by grace alone. No one can plan for the unexpected or be certain that you will not cause problems for someone else.
I for one don't want to live life in a padded room in case I get injured. I do however make sure that I do not endanger others about me. Again, you had to be there.

I won't go into this at any length. It's not worth bothering over much further, IMHO. I'm sure peeps have duly noted your points about what you consider safe and unsafe riding, you've made them clearly, let's not let it degenerate into nastiness, eh?
You know what I think? I think you should totally head out for a ride on Betty next time I'm down. Couple of hours around your favourite central NI roads. Catch the GSX1400 bug at your own pace.

Anyway back to the video, can't be arsed funelling through the bad points..
Beyond, when you look through a blind corner, where is your head looking at? I have video of me doing the exact same road (albeit wet, mossy and at dusk) going 1/20th of the speed because I just can't judge blind corners due to being afraid of a car coming around across the white line and always changing where I'm looking. I don't think I'm a bad rider, I just haven't 'perfected' my cornering... but seeing you take the same roads far faster than me, it makes me think maybe I need to rethink my structure in looking into a corner..
Cheers.

Nice to see us on your vid Paul (2 Blackbirds and a Busa). First time for us on this road and we were poodling along watching out for the green bits on the road when this loud GSX with an effing loud can comes flying past on a corner and none of us saw you coming! Looked bloody impressive from the back!
We did wave when you were parked up at the Kaiaua toilets, but might yet get to meet you face to face!

Nice video. That road is always a great ride! I also know it very well!
Not judging as I am not perfect, I saw 2 bad calls in that video. One was overtaking those 3 bikers coming up that corner. There is a short straight after you could of got them on. Second overtaking that car on the 35kmph corner coming down to Kawakawa bay. Its kinda blind. But i do love that corner!

Exactly. And what if the bike he passed going through the slip decided to move into the other wheel track at the last moment...???

So what is the point of the video then . . . it proves what - other than the roads were dirty, busy roads, possibly still wet in places an sum dude is using it like a race track - an some wonder why people die. Its shit like this that makes the headlines. 3 people died that day. Other KB'rs have died in a similar fashion - an yet . . . . some people are either too ignorant/arrogant/stupid to think it would happen to them.
Problem for me is beyond knows what can happen...

I wasnt on this ride but im sure the camera is not telling the full "story"
I am quite sure it is not the full story, I watched the whole video, and have to say there were times on there that even allowing for the fact I was not there, the riding was outside of the law and "dangerous" as in...posting 220 as a "random number" on the clip and then coming up behind a car at speed complaining there was no indication...Luck more than good management kept beyond safe on that trip!

Quick point for all the rock throwers. You break the law just once and you have broken the law period. You are just as guilty as I am in regard to the letter of the law. So, if you have never broken the law, judge away.

I'm liking this thread. Some good points and it shows how people can get impressions of photos and vids that aren't always correct.
Wasn't going to but I'll cover some issues here:
"Not judging as I am not perfect, I saw 2 bad calls in that video. One was overtaking those 3 bikers coming up that corner. There is a short straight after you could of got them on. Second overtaking that car on the 35kmph corner coming down to Kawakawa bay. Its kinda blind. But i do love that corner!"
Overtaking the 3 bikers was not an issue. I wasn't riding at 100% and could have braked while leaving room for any of them. I saw they were keeping well left and it's extremely rare for riders on a left hander to swing wide at the speed they were going so there was always going to be room for two in the left lane "if" a car came out of nowhere. I crossed the centre line momentarily becuase I could but would not have needed to if the worst happened.
Coming into Kawa on the tight left hander. I always look down the hill over the gully to the other side and see if anything is coming. You can overtake really safely here down and up hill once you've checked the road BUT the car on the left I was overtaking actually sped up and tried to muscle me off the road. You can't see that on the vid as it looks ahead. Again, I knew nothing was coming and were safe in the other lane and were checking ahead the whole time just in case.

Cheers.
PS. sorry for a valid question, here's some insults to keep the thread ontopic
Donor is a cunt! Wait, he's not even in this thread, damnit!
Some say ride to the vanishing point. You'll come to grief if you do that on public roads. Firstly wherever the road goes I'll be watching it even kilometres away to see if there are obstacles or traffic. I look ahead but constantly scan up close for potholes, tar patches, moss, wet etc or ripples that could upset your line. I'm always scanning as far as I can see and up close, calculating closing speeds and traffic movements.
In blind corners I'll swing wider to get to see around them quicker than riding too tight. I'll look as far around the corner as possible while using peripheral vision to scan up close for bad surfaces. I always prepare for the worst and are always ready to change direction and brake if necessary.
Most "close calls" from other driver errors can be easily avoided by keeping calm and collected and not panicking like hitting the brakes hard or standing the bike up.
You can easily change direction in corners on a heavy bike by countersteering and being ready to drop straight into the corner again once you have avoided the obstacle or offline motorist.

Exactly. And what if the bike he passed going through the slip decided to move into the other wheel track at the last moment...???
Yeah yeah, we know beyond thinks he is real good and all that... but what is his chances of riding like that every day for the next five years without his luck running out?
The guy at the slip was a new rider. There was no way he was going to change direction or come into my wheel line when he would have to leave an excellent dry wheel track and cross a whole lot of mud to get on my track.
If he was mad enough to do that, I would have had no problem crossing mud or moving over to give him room. I don't mind spin ups or expected rear wheel slides so wouldn't have had an issue giving them room.

Every day? You saw the vid; he'd been off the bike for six weeks. Give the man a break hey. Gotta cut a little bit loose now and then.
And, heck, that wasn't even loose.
So you wouldn't like his chances then if that was his daily commuting route and riding style?
A friend of a friend recently lost his brother a few months ago on a GSX1400. He used to commute 120ks each day. Apparently he was a bit of a hard charger and even had shift lights added to his 1400. One day however he somehow managed to fuck up a corner. A car coming the other way saw he wasn't going to make the corner and tried to pull over as far as they could to give him more room... but the bike still just clipped the car and went straight into a bank.
It really doesn't matter if you think you are good if you leave no margin for era or leave it down to luck if you get home or not. The law of averages will be against you.

That's sad stuff mate. :(
I used to commute on a bike to work, around 100,000kms covered that way I would say. I've had my share of accidents and have no intention of having another one, but again, life is full of chances and there are some lucky and some not and you don't need to be on a bike to find that out.
The closest I've come to breaking my neck in the last month is crawling down stairs in the dark after getting up for work so as not to wake the missus (something I do every morning) missing a step and taking the quicker route down. Ouch :(

And I am sure they do, eyes front, mirror left, mirror right, eyes front, check speed, corner ahead, consider gear, mirror left, mirror right, eyes front, change down, SOME CLOWN FLYS PAST!!!!!!!! scares the bejeaysus out of the rider, wobble, wobble, regain control, negotiates the corner really slowly, takes a deep breath and opens the throttle. If you approach a slower rider at speed, at least give them the benefit of inexperience and dont expect them to have your amazing ability to scan 300 things at the same time and still travel at speed.

Like all of us, he risks life and limb by just getting out of bed in the morning, but thats where it stops and I have had many conversations with him about riding safety in general. His views are sound and what you are seeing is a thinking rider who is very aware of his threats and manages his errors. I like the video, its a spectacular exposition of the 1400 on some of our roads around here. I instantly recognize Pauls riding style too. This is a motorcycle forum and we come here to do the motorcycle thing, videos and all.

Well, as usual ...(SNIP)...Some really good comments here.
To some, they will appear crazy to others boring just as this thread has pointed out.
...(SNIP)...Cheers for the posts peeps :)

Look mate, its all about risk. Your black and white outlook is flawed, as it doesn´t represent reality. Get into a car, boat, aeroplane or ride a motorcycle, you are always going to be at risk of hurting yourself or others.
How we manage the risk is what counts. That means thoughtfully driving, sailing, flying or riding within our means. The risk is never entirely eliminated, just managed to an acceptable level. Thats life and if you believe in risk free travel, then don´t ever get onto an aeroplane again. I´ve seen a lot of idiots on the roads riding way in excess of their ability, thus increasing their own and others risk to an unacceptable level. Beyond (paul) is not one of them.

You do not need to explain yourself to me... As I said I am not perfect and have done stupid things myself. Those are just my observations. You are correct though, i wasn't there and didn't see where you were looking, speed you were doing, where the car was etc so I may be intirely wrong.
I have met you one time when I came to find my mate on his orange zx6r and we was following you. You seem like a nice guy.

Has that actually been proposed, or did you just make that up right now?
Of course I made it up. :msn-wink:
It's not outside the realms of possibility though.

The only similar thing I'm aware of anywhere is the French 100hp restriction.
But that's the French, fer chrissakes.
And a 100hp restriction is a lot less draconian than a 500cc one.
(Remember, there's more smokers in NZ than there are motorcyclists.)

I remember meeting you too. At the bottom of the Hunua gorge. Your mate was meant to have gone down Popes road with you guys.
Yeah, was good meeting you and a nice day for a ride back then too :)

I think these videos are posted more for the 'stroke' value for the poster than for any 'educational' value.
Well no one would make videos if they didn't want to show off a little bit! I make them to show off the scenery for other international motorcyclists i'm connected with, I never thought of using them as a proxy for improving my motorcycling skills.. so I think I'm gonna give it a go. Of course there's a storm coming tomorrow!
I'll even post it in the General Discussion forum for you to point out my dangerous riding, look forward to it! :sunny:

Well, without digressing on this thread too much, not everyone on this forum necessarily takes the same stand as the vocal anti-cheesecutter brigade, y'know.
I'm sure you've noticed - neither do I.
I got way more than my money's worth out of ACC last year when I highsided and broke my hand. If they want to charge me twice the premium they do now via my bike rego, that'd seem fair to me. I am, after all, a high-risk customer.
Lucky you - I haven't made a claim to ACC in over 20 years.

Vid shows potentially dangerous situations approached in a less than cautious manner. I can see how the video could be interpreted as erratic, dangerous driving.

What action would you have taken if at 3:45 another biker had come over the crest of the hill doing the same speed?
What signals did the car at 3:20 give to indicate it was pulling left?
Im interested to hear how you would have reacted or what you saw that i missed, im sure ill come up with more as i watch further

From what I saw the scenery is fantastic- thanks BEYOND for showing me an awesome road to visit when I get to NZ.
I think it is a really good idea to watch your riding style, capabilities etc through home made videos. I have been fortunate to watch OWNERS progress with his stunting thanks to his video contributions on youtube!!

And even he admitts to the odd poor 'moment of reason'.
Blackbird said '' didnt even see you coming'' which is what I was getting at in a previous post. Its not only YOU the rider out there at any given moment, and its the 'any given moment' that can catch you out. Go back to December 06' and a couple of very experienced riders were caught out on a road they knew...real well.
Na sorry, wont/dont buy into that shit. Nobody is invincible on the road...ever!
Agreed too....Dec 06 wasa freak accident

Well this thread has certainly brought out ignorant comments from people who weren't there and the inferences made by others from what I said which simply aren't accurate.
Yep, the 3 of us didn't see Paul coming. I was leading our group, it was our first time on the northern end of that stretch of road, some shady parts were quite green; our situational awareness was directed at keeping a reasonable pace but mainly at that moment on reading the road surface conditions. Paul caught us entering a bend and our focus was forward for a few seconds to get a safe line - this is almost certainly why we didn't see him. As Paul said, we were keeping well left and there was plenty of room. I can't speak for him, but he may have also considered that riders of big bikes keeping well left weren't about to do anything dumb and even if we did drift out, he still had room. I certainly didn't feel at risk. Can't comment about the rest of the ride as like most of the more rabid posters, we weren't there.
Talk about "He who is without sin, cast the first stone". You'd think from some of the comments that some of us have never enjoyed a good fast fang on roads that we know intimately.

Many of the dangerous shit comments are ott. Remembering that we're watching from the camera's PoV not the riders eyes so miss a lot of things he's seen.
In saying that, few moments there would of scared the shit outta me had I been behind ya  but if I were, I'd of been too far behind to see anyway

Ok, reasonable questions so they deserve an answer.
The car at 3.20. I was on the brakes right until I had assessed there was no driveway on the right to turn into and her hands on the steering wheel were moving left. Only when I was sure she wasn't going to turn in front of me did I reopen the throttle. Frame at 3.32 shows her beginning her turn just before I start to pass.
I assume you mean 3.42 not 3.45.
The camera was mounted on the top of the headlamp, I could already see way down the hill past the bridge and to the next corner from eye height.
I refuse to overtake in areas where I can't see well enough ahead. That's asking for the short straw.
Wasn't bike dive. On my 1400 the front preload is near maximum. It was the camera nearly flopping over the front under hard braking. :)

Having finally downloaded and watched it all...
Looked like a nice ride!
It certainly lacks the visual impact that we normally see through a helmet visor, so a lot of info is missing in regards to wide-angle (peripheral) views and distance information.
Nice to see somone who has ridden a road a few times...

I was . . . to start with . . . but then SPB . . .
So what is the point of the video then . . . it proves what - other than the roads were dirty, busy roads, possibly still wet in places an sum dude is using it like a race track - an some wonder why people die. Its shit like this that makes the headlines. 3 people died that day. Other KB'rs have died in a similar fashion - an yet . . . . some people are either too ignorant/arrogant/stupid to think it would happen to them.
u should really look in the mirror before you start telling others about shootin their gob off
an yet another assumption
The point of my post . . . you figure it out.

Hiya,
Sunday was awesome. Had a wedding to go to so a quick run from Hunua to kaiaua was in order from 11.00am to 1.30pm. Had to have a blast and grabbed the vid camera for some on and off bike action.
Turn up the volume and enjoy :)

I can only think of those two gay cops who were on that TV show CHiPs - but I'm sure there are a few like that on here. (Honda riders mostly)
