Been holding back on this for a while now, more than a year. Have to get the lower two removed as they are growing 90 degrees and pushing the next teeth.

It's starting to hurt like crazy now, been taking about 6 panadols a day for the last 4 days.

I've been told I'll have to get it done under general as they have to cut the gums and then pull em out. Eeeek. Scary.

I've been referred to Dr. Barry M Scott on Esmonde Road in Takapuna by my dentist. Good old fella from U.K originally (all his quals are from there I think) but his surgery is old and ancient and I am worried.

Anyone had theirs done by him? Is he good? Can anyone recommend a good oral surgeon that I could speak to about this? Cost isn't an issue.

Thanks kbers.

Thanks kbers.Mate! I had four ripped out in one go by some dude in Esmonde Rd. can't recall the price but; went in on Friday arvo, got knocked out. Home that night, in agony, ate mushy food until Monday and went back to work that day. Bleedin' marvellous! Better out than in when it come to those puppies.

Never used the man, only advice I have is to get them sorted!

General anesthetic is a big way to go, sometimes the only way.

I had IV sedation for oral surgery to remove an impacted wisdom tooth they had to cut gum and chip out and stitch closed. Dont remember a thing, though apparently I am very funny under the influence of mind altering drugs :o.

Get them sorted as soon as! Those things can make you really sick if you leave them, and who needs that kind of pain anyway?

And if you can afford him. He doesn't have NZ"s fastest (supercharged) street driven Commodore by accident.

I had all four of wissies (surgeon's terminology ) out last year under a general (2 were impacted like yours and the other 2 would have caused issues eventually, so was best to whip em out at the same time) . Can't help on the surgeon as I was referred through the public system and had the op at Greenlane, still cost me $350 though (better than 2-3K, so not complaining too much).

I was more shit scared about the GA than the op itself having never had surgery before :baby: A very freaky experience!!!

My recovery was straight forward with very little pain... just kept popping the panadol every 4 hours and neurofen every 8 hours. Salt/warm water rinses about 6 times a day (after eating especially) are supposedly the biggest aid in healing and a savacol mouthwash rinse morning and night and everything was sweet about a week later. The most uncomfortable part for me was the jaw aches from the jaw being prised open so wide for the OP, and then getting pissed off with the stitches which took about 2 weeks to dissolve.

Good luck with it all... sounds like I was lucky to get mine out before they started giving me grief!

Thanks guys, again money isn't an issue at all, I just want to get it done with a good surgeon to make sure I get 100% good job done at it.

Want minimum pain and suffering, just the thought of it is making me very uneasy and I've been ignoring it for more than a year and it's causing a lot of pain now.

I've been through surgery before from a bike accident and know the medicine knocks you out and it takes time to recover. The fact it will be my mouth makes me sick. I love my food :(

I got my wisdom teeth done through 'Glenfield Dental Surgery', they bring in an oral surgeon to do the job.

Had an IV put into my arm by two sexy female assisstants, next thing I know I've woken up and I don't remember having all 4 teeth pull/cut out!

though once the pain killers wore off about 8 hours later, then the fun began lol. :pinch:

After getting my first wisdom tooth out painlessly in 5 mins, I would have recommended the dentist right by the YWCA and BK in Whangarei, but then the second tooth...

1hr 50mins of pulling, cutting, pulling, cutting, two people pulling, more cutting, about half a dozen needles, a hammer, more pulling, then three people pulling, cutting, on person falling over and smashing a table, more pulling, and they finally manage to rip it out of the mangled hole that used to be my left cheek.

Nothing but ginger kisses and soups for a week...

Don't worry, they said it was the toughest ever, I'm sure yours will be a breeze!

*EDIT: But the free drugs were fucking GREAT!! Waves of euphoria would wash over me every 15 mins or so!

Yeah general completely knocks you out. I'll do some research and come back and post. In the meantime if anyone knows of any top oral surgeons please let me know.

Thanks.

Well the stuff I had doesn't knock you out as such, just gets you really wasted, like being on the piss all night, you're awake, but you don't remember....plus no hang over!

I had all four taken out by a guy in the medical centre at the botom of parnell rise, beach rd I think?? My usual dentist is in the same building http://www.citydental.co.nz/Meet-Dr-Shepperson.cfm
My bottom teeth were like fishhooks, curved under the gum so impossible to just pull out and had to be cut out sideways.
I went under general as well, woke up feeling fantastic!! He also stitched all the holes closed (i heard some dentists just remove the teeth and let them heal over themselves, not good.)
Hardly felt any pain at all even over the next few days, was eating and chewing fine the same day :) Cost a shitload of money though (funny how medical insurance always excludes 'dental' surgery but any other surgery is fine)

I'm going to be cheeky and hijack this thread (on topic though!)

Who's a competent (and hopefully not to expensive) dentist in Auckland? I'm a poor student - so I need a decent job done for a moderate cost (or good repayment terms)

It will be a while until my next dental holiday to the Dental School in Dunedin, and my cracked molar won't go away by itself - and every day I leave it I feel the potential bill growing larger...

I had my wisdom teeth pulled in USA and I say, don't sweat. It was *VERY* uncomfortable, but not painful at all. G.A. was the weirdest experience in my life. After the injection, everything started slowly sliding downwards in front of my eyes, while staying in place at the same time. I am still totally puzzled as to how it is possible. The surgeon meanwhile went on with the surgery and I got scared that he will start cutting before I am knocked out. He inserted a plastic thingy into my mouth to keep it open, then immediately removed it. I asked what's wrong and he answered - that's it, get up, we are done. 25 minutes have simply disappeared from my life. The surgeon gave me the House MD stuff for pain. I took one pill and still have the rest stashed somewhere. It just didn't hurt. At all. So get your teeth done and don't worry about it.
Actually I lie. It did hurt when I got my credit card statement the following month.

Quick tip- I was between jobs when I got mine done, was supposed to start a new job the day of the op (the tooth removal kinda fucked that up...) so WINZ paid $400 towards it as emergency dental work.

Try that, unless you're full time employed like I am now (and have been ever since).
